TOR Air Defence system - Page 8 Empty Re: TOR Air Defence system

    Post  GarryB 07/05/14, 07:11 pm

I remember being asked why the Soviets took ATGM battalions into Afghanistan with them when there was clearly no enemy armour of note for them to work against. Equally some suggested the chem and bio warfare (defence) troops was evidence that the Soviets had or intended to use chem or bio weapons in Afghanistan.

The truth is actually rather less exciting... it was easier to keep the same military structure as found in units that would otherwise be deployed to central europe (where their capabilities would be essential) than to break those units up and spread their personel around the place.

Equally with Sochi the TOR and S-300 work together so why only use a small part of the machine to defend Sochi when the whole machine that is designed to work together can be used to offer protection from mortar shells right up to hijacked 747s.

A 747 falling from 10,000m altitude could be hit by a dozen TORs but will still hit a stadium on fire. Hitting it with a dozen S-300s would shatter it and scatter the pieces rendering the wreckage much less lethal to those on the ground.

With S-300 and TOR operating together detection and warning is improved with the more powerful sensors and tracking capability of the S-300 system.

Nope, it seemed a close-range AA cover for long-range S-300s. Actually, I think it is a standard disposition of AA in case of massive cruise missle attack. "Pantsir" is a more common close AA system for PVO battalions, but nevertheless.

Oh there was supposed to be a massive cruise missile attack on Sochi? Very Happy
Of course. Nobody trusts that goddamned 6th Fl... I mean iranian terrorists )))

It's a show, but not just plane stupid aka "let's place nice-looking vehicles in the cool spots for photos"

You are basically right, but AGTMs are good against field fortifications, for example, especially in the mountains, and chem troops operate special purpose weapons like RPOs and Buratinos. Even AA formations were used as mobile fire support platforms for convoys (Shilka) or just a rear guard troops.

I grabbed this list of TOR-M1 operators for my little analysis of were it could have came from. I would like to see input from others on this. I am not an expert in identifying the exact model.

This TOR could have came from where?

Azerbaijan - Several batteries of Tor-M2E. Very possible. Their corrupt government sells out to the highest bidder.
Belarus Delivered 4 No chance in hell
China - 35 No chance in hell
Cyprus - 6 Tough one to pin down
Egypt - 16 ZOG puppet state for many years now. Very possible but the people are not ZOG
Greece - 25 ZOG puppet state for many years now. Very possible but the people are not ZOG
Iran - 29 No chance in hell
Russia - 172 With 172, one could have been stolen but highly unlikely.
Ukraine - unknown Now a ZOG state. Very possible.
Venezuela - 12 No chance in hell

This being said, it is very possible that this Tor system is the real deal. It would be great if we could identify the models and cross reference them with the suspected states.

It is a fake. It has been discussed on quite a few forums, and the conclusion is 100% mockup.

    Nice thumbsup

Developer: SAM "Thor" is able to destroy aircraft "stealth" technology

"It can not be made invisible from all wavelengths range radar. Someone will see it badly, someone he never will see, and our systems provide 100-percent detection and destruction of the aircraft," - said the official.

The "stealth", he said, has "gradually loses its relevance."

New Russian Anti-Air System Prevented Terrorist Attacks on Sochi Olympics

The new Tor-M2KM and Tor-M2E systems prevented drone-based terrorist attacks during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, a representative of the systems' manufacturer told Sputnik.

MOSCOW, January 30 (Sputnik) — Russia's newest "Tor" anti-air defense system was used to prevent drone-based terrorist attacks against the Winter Olympics in Sochi, a representative of the plant that produces the systems told Sputnik.

"According to participants in the operation, they put in some serious work, preventing attempts at terrorist attacks that used drones, as well as balloons. Our unit successfully managed security at the Sochi Olympics," Vyacheslav Kartashov said.

Kartashov also also told Sputnik that the systems will be used to provide security at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as the Tor-M2KM modification is modular and can be put on any platform.

He also explained that the system is unique in that it is designed to destroy guided "smart bombs" and other modern high-accuracy weapons.

"The Tor type guided anti-air missile has a unique shrapnel, made from a high-density alloy, which has a special mass and form," Kartashov said. "This shrapnel has a high probability of punching through the shell of a guided bomb and detonating the explosives inside."

Kartashov said that the Tor system has practically no foreign-made components, making its production almost unaffected by sanctions.

The company has contracts with the Greek, Indian and Iranian militaries to service and modernize older Tor and Osa anti-air systems, and will be presenting the new Tor systems at the Aero India expo in Bangalore in February.

Vyacheslav Kartashov is the assistant to the general director on military-technical cooperation and government procurements at the IEMZ Kupol plant which makes the systems.
