Argentina will purchase more Mi-171 helicopters

Ministry of Defense of Argentina is considering the possibility of purchasing more Russian-produced multi-role Mi-171E helicopters, Lenta.ru reports with reference to Infodefensa and the Minister of Defense of Argentina Agustin Rossi.

The number of helicopters to be purchased and the date of signing the contract are unknown. At present Buenos-Aires operates two Mi-171E vehicles purchased in 2010 (the value of this contract was €22 million).

In May 2012 Russia and Argentina signed a memorandum of understanding, which included deliveries of three more Mi-171E and three Ka-226T helicopters to Buenos-Aires. Argentina hoped to get an export credit from Russia in order to purchase the vehicles. Buenos-Aires postponed the purchase of these helicopters due to defense budget constraints.

The first two Mi-171Es delivered to Argentina in 2011 were painted in white and orange and fitted with rescue hoisting devices. Argentina chose Russian helicopters, because they may be operated under severe climatic conditions (range of temperatures from -50 to +58 Celsius). Mi-171E helicopters are taking part in search-and-rescue operations and deliver goods to Argentina’s stations in Antarctic Region.

Argentina to Continue Purchasing Russian Mi-171 to Fly to Antarctica

Argentina has repeatedly spoken in favor of a new contract for the supply of Russian helicopters.

The holding ‘Russian Helicopters’ expects to sign new contracts with Argentina in the coming year.

Already, Argentina has purchased two Mi-171 helicopters to fly to Antarctica.

"We look forward to strengthening the negotiating process for the purchase of the Russian helicopters, following the visit of the head of state of Argentina to Moscow,” said the deputy head of the holding Alexander Scherbinin.

According to him, the Argentinian side has repeatedly spoken in favor of a new contract for the supply of Russian helicopters, as the “experience of their operation in Antarctica confirmed their excellent performance."

Of course they cannot, but Russia will loan them just like these agreements made these two days, Russia will invest etc..., actually the real question is can Russia afford these (all these economic agrees need Russian investment)?

That is all good, but how about some MiG-35 or Su-30, some Kilo or Lada subs and modern surface ships, and you know this may be in the realm of fantasy, but since they have a long tradition of carrier operations how about refurbishing Kiev or Minsk (IF they could still be usable) to something similar to Vikramaditya - either refurbished in Russia or perhaps China, and fitted with a squadron of MiG-29K? Smile

I am aware of their apparent problems, and also aware of the artificially low military budget, but they are a big country, as i understand rich in resources, so surely mutually beneficial comprehensive deals with Russia and China and increased trading could significantly improve their position. There is always a way if there is the will.
