the Russian forces began planning work for the construction of a helipad in the city of Qamishli in the "security square" area.

work has begun on the construction of a military helicopter landing pad inside the security square in the city of Qamishli to be affiliated with the Russian Coordination Center.

the arrival of Russian reinforcements to the square from Qamishli Airport, and explained that about 15 excavation and construction vehicles arrived, on Saturday, at the yard of the old French barracks and began work on planning and building the helipad.

work is taking place in conjunction with the construction of a Russian coordination center in the region under the Russian-backed Fifth Corps.

the decision to build the airstrip came suddenly by order of the Russian leadership at the Hmeimim base on the Syrian coast.

the airstrip is scheduled to accommodate four military helicopters, and the new coordination center is scheduled to receive the organization of ground and air military instructions between the Russian forces and the Syrian Arab Army forces in Qamishli.

    The view from Istanbul

    By Ragip Soylu

Published date: 29 September 2021 16:51 UTC | Last update: 2 hours 2 mins ago

Turkey and Russia agreed to preserve the status-quo in Syria's Idlib region during a meeting on Wednesday between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, a senior Turkish official told Middle East Eye.

Erdogan met Putin in the Russian resort city of Sochi amid an uptick in attacks in Idlib where Russian warplanes have targeted opposition strongholds close to Turkish military bases.

In March 2020, Turkey and Russia reached a ceasefire agreement that turned Idlib into a "de-escalation zone", but that deal has come under strain in recent weeks with air and ground bombardments of rebel-held positions.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar warned Moscow earlier this week that air strikes on opposition-held areas were killing civilians and radicalising locals.

"We expect Russia to uphold the deals we made," he said.

More than three million Syrian refugees are stuck in Idlib and there are fears that further Syrian and Russian attacks could push them into Turkish territory where public sentiment has hardened against them.

Earlier this week, Turkish officials told multiple news agencies that Erdogan would be pressing Putin on Syria, especially on Idlib and attacks against Turkish controlled areas by the Syrian Kurdish YPG.
Turkey: Erdogan says ties with US 'not healthy', Washington needs to 'sort out' S-400 dispute
    Read More »

Turkey sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), with which it has been locked in a deadly war for three decades.

"There is no change in Idlib. We will preserve the status-quo there," the senior Turkish official told MEE after the meeting.

It was not immediately clear whether Turkey agreed to any concessions to preserve the current understanding in Idlib.

"The steps we take together regarding Syria carry great importance. The peace there is dependent on Turkey-Russia ties," Erdogan told Putin at the start of their talks.

Erdogan did not take his ministers to Sochi, only bringing his senior advisor Ibrahim Kalin, communications chief Fahrettin Altun and intel chief Hakan Fidan.

Erdogan and the Russian president met without others present and it is believed they discussed the possible second-round purchase of Russian-made S-400s, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Libya.

In an apparent reference to the US, Erdogan told Putin he wanted to discuss further defence cooperation regardless of objections from Washington.

"At the UNGA [UN General Assembly], the typical persons especially asked us about certain issues specifically of course," Erdogan told Putin.

"We gave them the necessary response anyway. It is not possible for us to turn back from the steps we took. I especially believe this: it is of great importance for us to continue by strengthening Turkey-Russia ties every day."

Late last year, the US imposed sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defence system and ejected Ankara from the Nato-led F-35 programme to develop advanced fighter jets.

    Today's morning in Idlib:

There are at least 14 Russian unmanned aerial vehicles over Idlib this morning.

Today, the Russian Aerospace Forces are actively bombing the city of Maaret Misrin, the Jabal Ansariya ridge and the area to the west of Aleppo.

The Syrian Army is launching artillery strikes on the settlements of Fatira, Kensefra and Sfuhen on the Chebel-Zawiya line.

Russian planes bombed on the outskirts of the city of Al-Ziyar, northwest of Hama.

Idlib reports on the use by the Syrian army (or the Russian Armed Forces) of operational-tactical surface-to-ground missiles.

Almost two thousand terrorists decided to surrender to the Russian military.

Over the past week, almost two thousand militants who took part in hostilities both against the Syrian and, obviously, against the Russian military, preferred to surrender to the Russian military. According to the information previously provided by the Avia.pro news agency, a week earlier the number of militants who decided to surrender their weapons and stop terrorist activities was 5.5 thousand. As of September 30, 2021, the number of those has already reached 7150 people.

At the moment, the Russian side acts as an intermediary between the militants and the Syrian government forces, guaranteeing the first absence of persecution, provided that they return to peaceful life and surrender their weapons. Nevertheless, illegal armed groups have already begun to cooperate with the SAA forces, as reported by the Russian Vesna news agency.

“After the entry of Russian army units in Deraa, the situation in this hot spot near the borders of the SAR, Israel and Jordan has changed markedly. After the intervention of the Russian military in the south of the SAR, the fierce fighting stopped completely, the process of stabilizing the situation and the surrender of weapons by members of the illegal armed group is underway. More than 7100 militants have already responded to the call to stop the bloodshed and make peace with the government. ", - reports the publication "Russian Spring"

In fact, in a week, more than 1600 militants decided to move to a peaceful life. At the same time, it is reported that Russia and Syria are steadily maintaining their earlier promises. Obviously, this will lead to the fact that in the coming months the Syrian army will fully regain control over the southwestern part of Syria.

I suppose Idlib has to be first. Pundits out there seem to be now working on the basis that all hell will let loose at the end of the month, to allow those who wish to leave the last chance saloon.

I suspect that the Turks across the north will be the toughest to eject, especially if the 5000 turn up from Libya. The US will go after the others.
