KRET develops stellar navigation system for Russian strategic bombers

The KRET concern has developed the ANS-2009 stellar navigation system for the Russia’s Air Force Long-Rang Aviation’s (LRA) strategic bombers, the company has revealed.

“ANS-2009 allows the high-precise calculation of the plane’s co-ordinates, basing on stars’ position” the source told IHS Jane’s . The system’s evaluation, integration and control unit (EICU) identifies true co-ordinates and flight course, using such data. “The system is intended to evaluate the object’s speed and position, not depending on the flight duration,” they added.

“This method is the most reliable in combat conditions, when navigation satellite systems can be put out of action by an enemy,” the source pointed out.

I'm curious how/will it work during daylight.

Usually one star visible during the day... Smile

I suspect it uses an inertial system when there are no points it can measure from... a ground system can use a terrain map with known locations to update accuracy, while on aircraft flying above the clouds stars and the sun and moon can be used as reference points.

Very similarly to using it during the night; you can see stars during the day with a telescope.

The navigation system does not need the visible light band to operate. Stars emit at all sorts of frequencies and
you can have a starry sky in the middle of the day if you observe in the infrared.

Interesting; the American patent for a day-time stellar tracker claims a precision of 30m.

This is a magnitude worse than GPS/GLONASS; which claim accuracies of 3 - 7.5m, but still very much accurate enough for most uses.

Such systems would be too large to install on any precision-weapons though; as they rely on cameras/telescopes.

Old news, I know, but I hope they eventually base more Su-34's off of that island, or maybe help substitute it with Su-24's.

If harper wasnt a puppet for US or an asslicker to Nazi supporting Ukrainians here in Canada, then maybe I would be for peaceful arctic joint venture between Canada and Russia. But because of our politics here, I can only suggest to the other side to bunker down and dont trust whatever harper or the other ass clowns in Ontario say.

Interesting photo report from reconstruction of Akhtubinsk, Severomorsk-1 and Palana airfields, airbases. It's great to see new infrastructure, but only thing I miss in report are hangars for planes. Anyone have more informations or pictures of new hangars for planes? It is a waste of money to expose planes to the harsh weather under the clear sky instead of storing them in hangars. Warm hangars will increase the lifetime of planes.

Well, the planes do get covered in tarps.

I have seen pictures of portable hangers being used out East.

A lot of planes go in underground bunkers as I recall.

Russian Air Force aircraft fitness to reach 80% by yearend — defense ministry

Meanwhile, a whole series of incidents have occurred with Russian military aircraft lately

MOSCOW, July 31. /TASS/. Aircraft fitness in the Russian Air Force will reach 80% for the first time ever by the end of this year, a spokesman for Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Friday.

"The fitness rate of military equipment and armaments is 98% in the Army. The defense minister has set the task to have this rate at the level of no less than 80% in the Air Force by the end of this year. This has never been before," the spokesman said.

"This decision was first made for long-range aviation and then for all aviation forces," the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, a whole series of incidents have occurred with Russian military aircraft lately.

Technical failures were among the major causes for these incidents. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said last week the breakdown incidence in military aviation continued to be a major problem.

short summary: AN-140 Production is stoped since no parts can be imported from ukraine, with that the contract for MOD wont be fulfilled, from the rest of the parts avaibale the last AN-140's are getting build and then production will be terminated.

since Авиакор is a comany in samara that is specialized in AN-140 and Tu-154M only it most likely will be closed now

No, that dosent mean they need to close it.  Great thing about any facilities, is they can be converted by retooling to do other jobs.  Chances are, they will get them to work on other aircrafts. It would also reduce costs too in the long run.

As in, something that is too big to be carried around in backpack?
