    This is America's new $13 billion warship



    The US Navy is less than a year away from adding the most expensive warship in history to its fleet, the $13 billion USS Gerald Ford.

    The USS Ford, the lead ship of the new Ford-class aircraft carrier series, is expected to join the US Navy by February 2016, according to CNN. Once deployed, the ship will be the largest carrier ever to ply the seas and will feature a number of changes and advancements over the US' current Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

    Here's a look at this multi billion-dollar beast:

    The USS Gerald Ford is expected to cost upwards of $13 billion by the time it is deployed.

    The Ford, and the accompanying Ford-class carrier fleet, are intended to relieve stress and over-deployment within the US Navy. Currently, the Navy operates 10 carriers but wants an additional vessel to take pressure off of the rest of the fleet.

    The ship will feature a host of changes over the current Nimitz-class carrier. Ford-class carriers will be capable of generating three times more electrical power than the older carrier classes, for example.


    This increased electrical power supply allows the Ford to use the newly designed Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), which will allow the vessel to launch 25% more aircraft a day than the previous steam-powered launch systems.


    The amount of electricity onboard also makes the Ford-class carriers ideal candidates to field laser and directed-energy weapons in the future, like rail guns and missile interceptors.


    Once launched, the Ford will be the largest warship in the world. It will be 1,092 feet long and displace upwards of 100,000 tons.




    This size will allow the carrier to house about 4,400 staff and personnel while also carrying more than 75 aircraft.


    The aircraft carrier Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) gets underway beginning the ship's launch and transit to Newport News Shipyard pier 3 for the final stages of construction and testing.


    But for all the advances within the Ford-class carrier group, some have questioned the wisdom of continuing an astronomically expensive carrier-heavy naval strategy in a time when inter-state warfare is rare and nations like China continue to develop potentially carrier-killing long-range anti-ship cruise missiles.

    HII hands over 12th Virginia submarine to US Navy Rolling Eyes

    Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII's) Newport News Shipbuilding division has handed over the US Navy's (USN's) 12th Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN), officials announced on 25 June.

    John Warner (SSN 785) - named after the US senator and former secretary of the navy - was delivered at HII's Newport News, Virginia shipyard. It is the sixth Virginia SSN to be completed by Newport News, which is building the boats in partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat, under a teaming agreement.

    The USN is acquiring a 30-boat class of Virginia SSNs. Eleven boats are in commission.

    John Warner is the second of eight Block III Virginias that feature a redesigned bow (with a new Large Aperture Bow array) and two 87-inch Virginia payload tubes that each launch six Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles.

    USN trawls industry for future frigate's long-range missile

    The US Navy (USN) is canvassing industry for technology options to fulfil a requirement to equip its future frigates with an over-the-horizon weapon system to defend the ships against military surface craft and vessels.

    As part of a Request for Information (RfI) released by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in mid-June, the US government is seeking information "for design, development, test and evaluation, and manufacture of an over-the-horizon missile system capability to defeat surface threats".

    The system would be fitted on board new frigates to be based upon a modified version of the USN's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Current shipbuilding plans indicate that the navy intends to acquire 20 frigates beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2019.

    "Military officials say a A CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter belonging to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Aircraft Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing made a hard landing during Helicopter Ropes Suspension Techniques (HRST) training in a landing zone at Stone Bay, a Camp Lejeune satellite training area. HRST training provides Marines with the ability to conduct helicopter insertions and extractions where helicopter landings are impractical. About twenty Marines were participating in the training, which requires them to exit the back of the aircraft via a suspended rope while the helicopter hovers above a landing zone.

    It happened around 9 p.m.

    Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune (NHCL) says one Marine was transferred there via air MEDEVAC and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Of the injured Marines, two are in stable condition while the other nine have were discharged. Initially, seven Marines were treated at NHCL; six were evaluated and released while one remains at the hospital in stable condition. Additionally, one Marine is in stable condition after being transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. and is awaiting a minor procedure.

    “The loss of a Marine or Sailor affects us all. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of our deceased Marine,” said Maj. Gen. William Beydler, commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force. “While accidents like this are disturbing to the members of our Corps, we remain resilient and faithful to one another as we respond to this tragedy.”

    The name of the deceased Marine has not been released, pending notification of next of kin."

    US Navy Successfully Fires Tactical Missile From Littoral Combat Ship

    The SeaRAM anti-ship defense system defends navies against anti-ship cruise missiles.

    WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US littoral combat ship USS Coronado has successfully fired a tactical missile from an anti-ship defense system off the coast of California, US defense contractor Raytheon said in a press release on Thursday.

    “For the first time, the US Navy successfully fired a tactical missile from a SeaRAM launcher on an Independence variant littoral combat ship,” the press release read.

    SeaRAM anti-ship defense system, produced by Raytheon, defends navies against anti-ship cruise missiles, according to the release.

    "This test success marks a major milestone toward full operation and employment of the SeaRAM system on US Navy ships," Raytheon Missile Systems Naval Area and Mission Defense product line vice president, Rick Nelson, said.

    SeaRAM system uses advanced close-in weapon sensors for defense against anti-ship missiles and replaces a small infrared homing surface-to-air missile previously used by the US Navy, according to the release.

    Orbital ATK, a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, and the U.S. Navy successfully launched and scored a hit against the Mobile Ship Target during Block 1 upgrade test firings of the AGM-88E Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM) at the Point Mugu Sea Range on Aug. 18, 2015.


    The AARGM shot was launched from a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet in a scenario designed to test the missile’s capabilities against mobile ship targets employing advanced tactics.

    “The block upgrade testing demonstrated that the hardware, software and aircraft systems all worked together resulting in the successful live fire of the weapon,” said Bill Kasting, Vice President and General Manager of Orbital ATK’s Defense Electronic Systems division of the Defense System’s Group. “We look forward to rolling out these upgrades throughout the fleet, upon the successful completion of follow-on operational testing.”

    “This first Block 1 live fire test demonstrated the weapon’s effectiveness against a moving ship,” said Gordon Turner, Vice President Strike Weapons. “This is the first live-fire test in a series of live-fire and captive-carry events that will assess the missile’s software modifications made to deliver new capabilities to the warfighter

    The AARGM shot was launched from a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet in a scenario designed to test the missile’s capabilities against mobile ship targets employing advanced tactics. The AARGM utilized its advanced anti-radiation homing sensor and millimeter wave radar to successfully detect, identify, locate and engage the moving maritime target.

    Orbital ATK participated in the missile firing as a member of the U.S. Navy's Integrated Product Team, led by the Direct and Time Sensitive Strike Program Office. Team members from the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division - China Lake led the AARGM Block 1 Upgrade test. Additional test team members included Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division – Point Mugu, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Three One, and the Naval Air Systems Command.

    AARGM is a supersonic, air-launched tactical missile system, upgrading legacy AGM-88 HARM systems with advanced capability to perform Destruction of Enemy Air Defense missions. AARGM provides the most advanced system for pilots, with in-cockpit, real-time electronic order of battle situational awareness against today’s modern surface-to-air threats. It is able to rapidly engage traditional and non-traditional advanced land- and sea-based air-defense threats, as well as striking, time-sensitive targets.

    AARGM is currently deployed with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. AARGM achieved Initial Operational Capability in July 2012 and was approved by the Navy for Full Rate Production in September 2012.

    AARGM is a U.S. Navy and Italian Air Force international cooperative major acquisition program with the U.S. Navy as the executive agent. AARGM is currently deployed and supporting operational requirements for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. The missile is integrated into the weapons system on the F/A-18C/D Hornet, FA-18E/F Super Hornet and E/A-18G Growler aircraft. AARGM is anticipated to achieve Initial Operational Capability on the Italian Air Force’s Tornado ECR aircraft in 2017.

    STRATCOM CO: Next Air Force ICBM, Navy Sub Launched Ballistic Missile Could Have More in Common


    The U.S. Air Force and Navy are working to include more commonality in their next batch of nuclear tipped ballistic missiles, the head of U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) told reporters on Thursday.
    “In terms of commonality, I have signed a letter along with [USN acquisition executive] Sean Stackley and [USAF acquisition executive] William LaPlante such that we do look at a common approach where we can associate with a future missile,” Adm Cecil Haney said, according to a report in Jane’s Defence Weekly.

    Currently the Air Force fields the 1970s era LGM-30 Minute Man III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and is working toward extending the life of the standing force of 400 missiles into the 2030s. The Navy’s UGM-133A Trident II D5 were first fielded in the 1990s and will carry over to the Ohio-class Replacement Program nuclear ballistic missile submarine that will start construction in the 2020s.

    “The Air Force is also modernizing the Minuteman missiles, replacing and upgrading their rocket motors, guidance systems, and other components, so that they can remain in the force through 2030,” read a March Congressional Research Service report.
    “It is conducting studies and analysis on its plans to replace the missiles after 2030.”

    The Minuteman III replacement — the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent program — is undergoing an analysis of alternatives (AoA) ahead of a request for proposal that could be released to industry as early as this year, Haney said.

    In tandem with the AoA, the Air Force and Navy are looking at commonality in the warhead as well as the unspecified components for the future strategic deterrent missiles.

    A refresh of the Cold War-era nuclear forces has been an ongoing and expensive line item in the U.S. defense spending planning. Esitmates say the effort to aqdquetly modernize the nuclear deterrent triad of bombers, nuclear submarines and ICBMs could cost up to $1 trillion into the 2040s, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate.

    The highly autonomous underwater vehicles could be sent to scout ahead of attack submarines, or to guard valuable undersea targets.

    The U.S. Navy plans to deploy a squadron of underwater drones within the next four years, including the Large Displacement Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, or LDUUV, a 10-foot, highly autonomous, and very, very yellow subdrone, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said today.

    It’s not yet clear just what missions will be performed by the LDUUV, which resembles a giant robot canary fish crossed with a sausage. Some Navy watchers expect it to boost attack submarines’ intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, but officials with the Office of Naval Research pushed back against such speculation. “Right now, it’s just an empty platform with some innovative power production things that will help increase its endurance,” one official said.

    Mabus made the announcement at Tuesday’s AUVSI Unmanned Systems Defense 2015 conference, the day after the New York Times reported on Pentagon concerns about Russian submarine movements near critical undersea data cables.

    Rear Adm. Mat Winter, the chief of U.S. Naval Research, unveiled the giant yellow submersible in April at the Navy League’s Sea, Air, Space expo. At the time, Winter underscored the Navy’s need for an unmanned, underwater vehicle will be able to deploy for weeks, months, and years.

    “I am continuously amazed with the underwater breakthrough technologies in power, power generation, and navigation and sense and avoid,” Winter said. “When people say, ‘I can’t see that happening. There’s no way that can be,’ I say, ‘Excellent! Put that on ONR’s list.’”

    Looks like the Navy has done just that. The ONR official said that Mabus’s announcement came as a “surprise,” but that it was something that they “had been working toward.”

    Mabus said the LDUUV would help the Navy develop “increased subsurface endurance and autonomy” — read that to mean subdrones that can operate with minimal human intervention close to vital areas and targets. The LDUUV currently has an undersea endurance of 30 days but the eventual goal is to stretch that to years. (Original builder specifications can be found here.)

    “These systems are affordable and rapidly deployable worldwide. They’ve already been operational and served as critical enablers and game-changers for mine-hunting missions, such as those that will be conducted aboard [littoral combat ship]. We plan to deploy LDUUV from an exclusively UUV squadron on an independent mission by 2020,” the secretary said.

    Next spring, the LDUUV is scheduled to demonstrate its open-ocean navigation abilities by sailing from San Francisco to San Diego.

    BTW, Werewolf is it possible to get a indepth break down on why the Mi-26 (a helicopter designed in the 1970's) is superior to the CH-53K? Because I don't think I can do this topic as much justice as you could lol! A serious breakdown will show how unjustified the cost is.

    "The U.S. Navy on Tuesday underscored its desire to buy more Boeing Co F/A-18E/F Super Hornets in coming years to deal with higher-than-expected operational demands and past delays in the Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jet program. Rear Admiral Michael Manazir, director of air warfare for the U.S. chief of naval operations, told lawmakers that the Navy was working to speed up maintenance of older-model F/A-18s, but would also need to buy more new F/A-18E/F jets to avert a shortfall in strike fighters for its aircraft carriers. Manazir, testifying before the readiness subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee, echoed a call earlier this year by former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert, who said the Navy would need two to three more squadrons of Super Hornets, or 24 to 36 more aircraft, to meet its needs.

    U.S. lawmakers are poised to approve the purchase of 12 F/A-18E/Fs in fiscal 2016, which began Oct. 1. Manazir said problems could be avoided if the Navy bought more Super Hornets in both fiscal 2017 and 2018, and was able to start using an initial squadron of F-35 fighter jets as now planned in August 2018. F-35 delays forced the Navy several years ago to extend the service life of its older F/A-18C Hornets from 6,000 hours to 10,000 hours, a project that turned out to be more intensive and take much longer than expected. Manazir's comments spell good news for Boeing, which needs more F/A-18E/F orders to extend its St. Louis production line beyond the end of 2017, when it is currently slated to end. Manazir said it would not make sense for the Navy to accelerate its purchases of F-35 C-model jets instead since work had not been completed on the required Block 3F software needed for the jets to carry all the weapons required by the Navy.

    Navy acquisition chief Sean Stackley reassured lawmakers that the F-35C aircraft the Navy is buying in fiscal 2016 would be delivered in 2018 with the needed software package. Boeing spokesman Todd Blecher said it was premature to comment on Manazir's comments since the Pentagon is still finalizing its fiscal 2017 budget plans. If Congress finalizes the order of 12 jets in fiscal 2016, the Boeing F/A-18 production line will extend through mid-2018, while an expected order of 28 more jets from Kuwait could push production out until 2019 or beyond."


    Unusually big last minute orders last few years and this of F18 derivates for USN air wing, seems like they are trying to get as more Hornets as they can before F35 hits the fan, coz something actually needs to fly Very Happy
