Russia isn't producing such ships because they are too small and carry low amount of weapons. It also is a pain for crews during long deployements. They have SSK for coastal missions.

French 1970 Rubis class is 70m long and had a nuclear reactor.

Re: Russian Navy: Status and News #5
Australia has opened a can of worms by going nuclear. South Korea is also going that route with a sub that can even deliver SLBM's! Not to mention India and Brazil. This will certainly open up a new market for small nuclear powered submarines and Russia has all the tech to meet this demand if they want to - and I'm sure they will. This will then most likely lead to domestic production as well. The Losharik accident will also hasten developments in that direction as well.

Ha ha... funny you mention it but the Losharik is a 2,000 ton sub with nuke propulsion... but it is a deep diving sub and I don't think it is armed.
If it was an armed sub you would use the power of the nuclear propulsion system to increase armament which would make it rather bigger and heavier of course.

What for ?
Taking a small submarine as a basis for a SSN is stupid. Even if it was nuclear at the begining. Just design it from scratch.

Why add Pantsir-M to a Tarantul that only carries the P-15 Termit?
It must be useless by now against any NATOista warship, limited only to taking down civvies.

No worries. There are more than enough ship-based, shore-based and aircraft-based missiles to sink the one or two major NATO warship present at any given time in the Black Sea.
For everything else (including the mighty 404 Navy), the Termit is just fine.
In case of a war, the Termit will most likely be used against land based targets (it has a dual role).
The Pantsir is to protect against the incidental aerial threats (manned or unmanned).

Not sure if it's this craft but there was one used as a trial platform for the sea Pantsir.

Termit was used on export versions.
It is 4 Moskit mach 3 missiles for russian Tarantul... it can take out a cruiser.

Yes Gazza is wrong on this one, P15 termit is in export version, and Crimea uses P15 in the Utyos coastal defense system
Moskit is a good missile, but 16 Kh35 with 500km range seems better for the targets hel be gunning for
But then again moskit is called the sunburn for a reason

Re: Russian Navy: Status and News #5
Big Gazza is not wrong.
That vessel with Pantsir-M has indeed the Termit.
And it is not the only Russian Tarantul class ship that has Termit.
Most have the Moskit, a few have the Termit. None of them is the export version.
The export version of Tarantul has simpler search radar and other downgrades. And yes, they are armed with Termit as well.

Utyos uses P-35 not P-15. It is another level.

This Tarantul2 boat (R-71) has been used as a trails ship in the 90's for the Kashtan system as well. Then numbered 952.
Now it's 962 with the Pantsir.
One Tarantul3 was also used as a trails ship for the Palma system.

The Tarantul2's was basically used to attract foreign interest back in Soviet days.

Good ole' Kashtan, aka 'Chestnut' made ships tougher nuts to crack. They say during Christmas/winter it's really good to roast chestnut's on a open fire......Ironically enough 'Chestnuts' are really good at roasting HATO aircraft when it opens fire!

This ship may have been designed to used Kashtan so it has place for the reloader.
But for the other ships that use only the ak-630 we don't really know if they could be modernized with a Pantsir system, unless if they want to have only ready to launch 8 missiles.

I don't think they have any intention to mod any of the Tarantuls with Pantsirs - just using this single boat for trails. They would rather incorporate the Pantsir into newer designs like the Karakurt.

Those are exhausts for the turbines, used when it runs a full speed.
An additional profit is the fact that the gases mix with water splash/particles, which lowes the heat signature.

It really is a lot of firepower in a small package, something our Western blue water navies turn their noses up at, just look at the new RN frigates, no AShM!!!.

Re: Russian Navy: Status and News #5
John,
This type has two tracts for exhaust gases actually.
One is a standard pipe via mast, two of them, just above the engine room.
It works for a cruising speed.
As soon as you go high, the catches in a back should be opened, and the exhaust gases go there, mixing with water mist.
This is a bloody chaser, goes up to 47kts, probably even faster if you are in a real need and do not care the stress.
