    Increased ammunition
The ammunition of the CJSC "Lotos" is doubled compared with its predecessor 2S9 "Nona". The chief designer of "Lotus" Veniamin Schastlivtsev told the journalists about it on the premiere of the gun.

Nona’s” ammunition is 20 shots, here [on the Lotus] - almost twice as many, ”Schastlivtsev said.

    Specifications:

    Lotos self-propelled artillery system

Russia is developing the 2S42 Lotos air-droppable floating self-propelled artillery gun to boost the firepower of the Airborne Force and replace operational 2S9 Nona 120mm self-propelled artillery-mortar systems.

The artillery gun is mounted on the chassis of the BMD-4 airborne infantry fighting vehicle. As the Rostec press office reported, the new artillery vehicle weighs 18 tonnes, can develop a maximum speed of 70 km/h, operates a 450hp engine and has a cruising range of no less than 500 km.

The artillery system has a crew of four, a rate of fire of six-eight rounds per minute and a firing range of 13 km. The preparation and delivery of fire are maximally automated.

The Lotos is a follow-up and a replacement of the Zauralets project, which was aimed at developing a new self-propelled artillery gun for the Airborne Force to boost the paratroopers’ firepower and maneuverable capabilities. The Lotos system will be furnished with a 120 mm gun as its basic armament while its artillery round will be heavily upgraded to be slightly behind the 152mm shell by its firepower.

The firing range of the newest CAO "Lotos" can be increased

For the Lotos self-propelled artillery gun developed at TsNIItochmash of the Rostec State Corporation in the interests of the Airborne Forces, an adjustable ammunition with a range of up to 20 kilometers can be created. About this in an interview with "Star" said the chief designer of the CAO Veniamin Schastlivtsev.

“At the moment we are using the Kitolov-2 projectile with a range of 10-13 kilometers. But there are studies, and we go with them, on the creation of ammunition, which will increase the firing range of up to 20 kilometers, ”said Schastlivtsev.

Judging by this photo I'd be more inclined to assume that it will be sent to a junkyard rather than mass production...

It is an airborne vehicle that is in many ways comparable to the 2S1 and indeed the 2S34 replacement.

It should be able to fire the 120mm Gran guided shell, but clearly it can also fire the 122mm Kitolov guided round previously used by the 2S1 and D-30 towed 122mm artillery pieces.

So basically it is in effect a combination of 2S1, 2S34, and Nona and Vena all wrapped into a tiny vehicle that can be air dropped... yeah, I understand why you hate it PD... looks like a good vehicle.

New long-range planning projectile will create for self-propelled gun "Lotus"

The chief designer of "Lotus" Veniamin Schastlivtsev noted that the maximum range can be up to 25 km

A new controlled active-reactive planning projectile (cipher Glissad) with a range of up to 25 km is being created for the prospective self-propelled artillery gun (SAO) of the VDV Lotos developed by TsNIITOCHMASH (part of Rostec). About this at the forum "Army-2019" said the chief designer of the "Lotus" Veniamin Schastlivtsev.

“Our proposal is to put this type of work, the Glissad code, with controlled active-reactive planning ammunition. The maximum range can be obtained at 25 km,” said Schastlivtsev.

When developing the "Glissade", it is proposed to use the developments obtained earlier when creating new ammunition for the promising 152-mm self-propelled artillery system "Coalition".

"At the same time, we assume that this work should be developed on the basis of the homing head of an ammunition with a large controlled range, which is now being developed in a 152 mm caliber for the Coalition-BP," said the designer.

According to him, at one time exactly the same decision was made when developing the previous generation of high-precision weapons.

“Krasnopol’s munition was developed in a 152 mm caliber, the KBP developed, and then Kitolov-2, which we have today, was developed under the same homing head,” Schastlivtsev explained.

Russian paratroopers’ self-propelled artillery gun to undergo dynamic drop tests

The Lotos is a follow-up and a replacement of the Zauralets project, which was aimed at developing a new self-propelled artillery gun for the Airborne Force to boost the paratroopers’ firepower and maneuverable capabilities

MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. The Moscow Design and Production Center Universal (part of Technodinamika Group within the state hi-tech corporation Rostec) will hold dynamic drop tests of the Lotos self-propelled artillery gun being developed for Russia’s Airborne Force, Company CEO Ivan Androsov said on Wednesday.

The dynamic drop tests will simulate the conditions of air-dropping the artillery gun with the help of the landing craft and assess its technical condition after the landing.

"Universal is currently taking part in this R&D work. We have made a set of the landing system for this gun to confirm the possibility of air-dropping this weapon and are planning to hold dynamic drop tests before the end of the year," Androsov informed.

Russia is developing the 2S42 Lotos air-droppable floating self-propelled artillery gun to boost the firepower of the Airborne Force and replace operational 2S9 Nona 120mm self-propelled artillery-mortar systems.

The Lotos is a follow-up and a replacement of the Zauralets project, which was aimed at developing a new self-propelled artillery gun for the Airborne Force to boost the paratroopers’ firepower and maneuverable capabilities. The Lotos system will be furnished with a 120mm gun as its basic armament while its artillery round will be heavily upgraded to be slightly behind the 152mm shell by its firepower.

The artillery gun is mounted on the chassis of the BMD-4M airborne infantry fighting vehicle. As the Rostec press office reported, the new artillery vehicle weighs 18 tonnes, can develop a maximum speed of 70km/h, operates a 450hp engine and has a cruising range of no less than 500km.

The artillery system has a crew of four, a rate of fire of six-eight rounds per minute and a firing range of 13km. The preparation and delivery of fire are maximally automated.

Along with the Lotos system, Russia is developing a Zavet-D new artillery fire control vehicle. Both systems will feature the ability to be transported by military transport aircraft and air-dropped by a parachute.

    Fresh video of the Lotos:

    Crew seating looks as follows:

Driver: front of vehicle in the middle
Commander: front of vehicle, on the right of driver
    Gunner: in turret

I like the aesthetics of this BMD-4 based vehicle. I just hate the looks of the muzzle brake. I hope they replace it with a better looking one.

Post  GarryB Thu Aug 13, 2020 12:07 pm

I seem to recall the Zauralets design was supposed to be a 152mm gun/mortar... which I always thought was kind of odd.

The 120mm gun/mortar made sense because it is already a mortar calibre so you have a 120mm rifled gun tube for firing 120mm mortar bombs, but you can also load 120mm shells with propellent bags like a howitzer to greater ranges.... the 120mm mortar has a range of about 7km while the 120mm HE shells fired with propellent bags has a range of up to 13km.

Because it is very close in calibre to the 122mm artillery gun it can use the 122mm Kitilov missile as well as the 120mm Gran guided missiles for 122mm and 120mm weapons respectively.

The 152mm gun mortar never seemed to make sense to me because there is no mortar in 152mm and 160mm mortar bombs would be way too big in calibre to be compatible so it would be adding two new calibres to the inventory.

Of course the shell weight of the 152mm shell for the gun mortar would be really big... the 120mm mortar bomb is about 16kgs which is a good weight, but the 160mm mortar bomb is about 40kgs and significantly more powerful as would the 152mm shell the system fired but the range would not be increased by a huge amount over the 120mm gun/mortar... probably to perhaps 15km... the main advance would be in shell weight.

They have said the power of the new rounds is increased to near 152mm rounds and range might be increased to 25km which is impressive for an airborne vehicle.

I would think Armata and Kurganets and Boomerang divisions might benefit from a mortar carrier and this turret would be interesting, though it is manned so it will perhaps be a variation of this maybe?

I like the aesthetics of this BMD-4 based vehicle. I just hate the looks of the muzzle brake. I hope they replace it with a better looking one.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... a good muzzle brake is much more value than a pretty one.

Those rounds (projectiles) are much longer and more streamlined than the older 120mm shells which were shorter and stubbier. I suspect the increased length of side wall will improve fragmentation as well as reduce drag in flight.

For close range targets reduced propellent bags are used to get a nice vertical shell on impact for more efficient use of fragments on target.

All in something you can drop from an air plane... this is very cool... and I think a better idea than the older 152mm Zauralets...

    Nice.

Those prospective new 25km range rounds are described as active/reactive... which makes it sound like they may have some form of motor assistance... likely ramjet or perhaps base bleed/rocket assistance.

Perhaps the latter would achieve a range increase to 25km from the earlier 13kms already achieved with shells...

The 152mm new shells they are talking about are the 70km shells which is about double the older rounds from long barrel guns of 30km plus ranges.

They are also talking about 180km range 152mm shells which I would suspect are ramjet boosted rounds... I would just thing base bleed and rocket assisted technology would be good enough to achieve 25km ranges for the 120mm shell rounds.

The 120mm mortar bombs would be limited to 7km as usual but lots of targets can be engaged perfectly safely from 7km range so that is OK.
