Russia will get a tank with an electromagnetic gun and a laser
Russia is working on the issue of creating a tracked combat vehicle that can carry radically new weapons. It is reported by Interfax, citing a source in the military-industrial complex.
It is assumed that the machine can be operated in unmanned mode. At the first stage of work it is necessary to create a tank power supply system. “In the future, such a tank can get not only an electrothermochemical artillery system, but also a combat laser and an electromagnetic gun,” the agency’s source said. Interfax clarifies that this information has not been officially confirmed.
In the summer of 2018, it was reported that the Russian T-14 Armata tank or combat vehicles of the new generation in the future could receive a railgun, a microwave gun or a laser weapon.

Very much alike Leclerc, where displays are almost directly below the turret hatch, as it is in Type 10, M1A2, etc.

Suspect this new vehicle will have electric drive, and likely a gas turbine for developing electrical power.
Obviously they need some way of storing large amounts of electrical power to be used in short bursts... like EMALS... which would be useful for high energy weapons, Propulsion, and indeed armour and protection.
I remember reading a british proposal of electric armour where the protection consisted of an inner and an outer plate with insulation between and with enormous amounts of current going through them... when a penetrator hit the first plate nothing happens, but as it pushes through the insulation and strikes the charged inner plate a circuit is completed and an enormous current runs through the projectile or HEAT plasma stream and vapourises it... blowing it back out of the hole it came in from... you could then have NERA and then the actual base armour of the vehicle.
It is supposed to obliterate HEAT plasma streams and also disrupt the structural integrity of long penetrators, but it was only theory AFAIK...
Imagine the next gen Russian armoured vehicle... power to laser, power to microwave weapon, power to shields, power to propulsion to warp the hell out of here... and someone with a scottish accent telling the captain he can't giver her any more or she will blow up...

It`s interesting, but laser and other directed energy weapons need terrific amount of energy to be stored and released in one moment. Electric power and transmission is very interesting, but is still heavy, bulky and complicated. There were many prototypes to use electricity for power and transmission in land vehicles, but of the rare relatively mass produced was e.g. 9 ton belgian Cobra APC. No succesful MBT by now, though Russians experimented with IS-7 and some experimental heavy tanks to have electric transmission and E propulsion motors. Wait and see in the future. Could be!

I really can't see them making lasers designed to punch through metres of armour to defeat tanks... I suspect it would more likely be used to defeat aircraft, and optical systems of ground and aerial vehicles.
Energy weapons might be used to microwave enemy troops inside armour, or turn their armour into a weapon against them, or to damage electronics in vehicles and aircraft.
They were working on electric drive BMP-3s and BTRs I believe in the 2000s, there were some comments about the new vehicle families all being electric drive systems with small gas turbine power sources.
Note gas turbine engines are compact and powerful but not super efficient in direct drive engine setups for large heavy vehicles... the Soviets developed and put into service the T-80 tank with a gas turbine which consumed a lot of fuel because tanks spend a lot of time stopped so starting up and accelerating is not very efficient for a gas turbine engine.
In an electric drive set up where the GT just generates electricity to be stored and used by electric motors you can keep the GT operating at an efficient rate without variation generating electricity efficiently without strain or changes in revs that would effect fuel consumption negatively.
Pretty much a GT engine connected directly to an electric motor that works as a dynamo it the basic setup with the power generated stored in capacitor banks.
Fuel cell technology could also be used with a large tank of water where excess electricity could be pumped into the fuel cell to separate the oxygen and hydrogen which can be stored so when electricity is needed it can be pumped back through the fuel cell and the extra electricity released for use with the byproduct of heat and water vapour.
New technology in magnets and electrical storage and motors will be valuable in a wide range of other areas... including UAVs and EMALS, as well as space...

Unified standard chassis OCD "One volume"
In 2015, combat vehicles paraded on the Armata platform paraded around Red Square. The heavy impression of both the public and the specialists was made by the heavy BMP T-15. A feature of this machine was the use of front-mounted MTO, which is extremely uncharacteristic of heavy-duty Russian cars. However, few people know that the origins of this development lie 20 years earlier. Then, in 1995, work was under way on the creation of a promising T-95 tank. Naturally, the military wanted to develop this theme in the direction of creating a whole family of vehicles, mainly of an auxiliary purpose. In November, the GABTU issued a technical assignment for TTZ T.218-95 to conduct development work under the code “One volume”, and at the same time two design bureaus - Nizhny Tagil and Omsk.
At the technical project stage, the development of five machines at once at the nodes of the T-95 tank was assigned. UKBTM developed 1UTSh1 and 2UTSh3, KBTM - 3UTSh5, 4UTSh4 and 4UTSh5.
Such a strange name had the following decoding:
UTSH - unified standard chassis
The first digit meant:
1 - rear arrangement of MTU
2 - front arrangement of MTU
3 - front arrangement of the MTH with a remote cabin
4 - rear arrangement of the MTH with a remote cabin
The number at the end is the category of protection of frontal and lateral projections at probable angles of attack from weapons of destruction, in order of decreasing reservation levels. Those were five:
1st category of protection - from armor-piercing sub-caliber shells of modern tank guns and guided anti-tank missiles with cumulative combat units;
2nd category of protection - from armor-piercing sabots of small-caliber automatic cannons and anti-tank grenades with cumulative combat units;
3rd category of protection - from armor-piercing cartridges of large-caliber machine guns;
4th category of protection - from armor-piercing bullets of 7.62mm caliber and fragments of high-explosive fragmentation projectiles;
The 5th category of protection is not exactly known to me, but presumably it indicates the absence of protection.
It was assumed that the UTSH can be used to create on their base:
1UTSH1 - a BMPT tank support fighting vehicle, the Niva control vehicle, a BMDO radiation weapons fighting vehicle;
1UTS2 - BREM of the “Uncoupling” type, of the Caterpillar-1 type MTU axle-laying machine, the Kortit engineering mine sweeper, a remote-controlled engineering minesweeper TIMT of the Kardenit K type;
1UTSH3 - engineering robber machine WRI type "Robot-2";
2UTS2 - an armored personnel carrier heavy BTR-T, a combined-arms command and command vehicle OKSHM, a combat vehicle of a heavy flamethrower system BM TOS, a flamethrower armored fighting vehicle SBMB, a mobile telecontrol station for a workable engineering complex for overcoming mine-explosive obstacles of the type “Kardenit”;
2UTSh3 - an armored workshop for maintenance of BMTO, a transport-charging vehicle for a heavy flamethrower system TZM TOS, a combat vehicle for collective protection against high-precision weapons BMZ WTO, a universal mining and demining system for UMP;
2UTS5 - SAO and TZM 152mm of the Msta-SM type art complex;
3UTS4 - MTM multi-purpose transport machine, TM trench machine, KM trenching machine;
3UTS5 - landing craft ferry of the type PMM-2, machine for ferries;
4УТШ4 - Derrick-type track planter;
4UTSh5 - alas, until I know what it is L
Total weight of the chassis should not exceed:
1УШШ1 - 42т
2УТШ3 - 38т
3УТШ - 34т
4УТШ - 36т
The composition of the UTSH included the following components:
- armored case with built-in and mounted protection elements (separate controls, separate pieces for special equipment and calculation and logistic equipment);
- chassis control means: IUS-V, CO-TO5-Yu, 2 pcs. Aqueduct E-25U, R-174, APD-195
- means of ensuring interaction (communication, orientation, state recognition) data bus of the "Manchester-2" type;
- means of ensuring habitability;
- means of counteracting and reducing visibility
- Electromagnetic Protection System (SEMP)
- power supply system;
- system of protection against weapons of mass destruction;
- PPO system;
- engine and transmission installation;
-chassis;
-Equipment for underwater driving (if necessary), self-digging and clearance (mounted on the chassis), service equipment and spare parts.
The work was carried out in close cooperation between the two design bureaus. After reviewing the results of the first Chechen campaign, it generally received priority status. At the same time, at the same time it was assumed, by analogy with heavy UTSH, to develop work on a similar chassis for tracked vehicles of medium weight.
I managed to find a mention of this in one of the “tasty” documents of the Combined Arms Academy of the RF Armed Forces. I will quote: “In order to eliminate the deficiencies in the development of weapons and military equipment of the Ground Forces identified during the fighting, the ordering departments of the Ministry of Defense, together with industry organizations, need to:
- to carry out a detailed analysis of the failure of weapons and military equipment in the zone of the Chechen conflict for combat damage and technical reasons and to prepare an action plan to eliminate the identified deficiencies;
- analyze the R & D Plan for 1996 and the draft Plan for 1997 with the aim of making the necessary adjustments to the TTZ for developed and modernized WWE samples of the Ground Forces in terms of maximally taking into account the experience of combat use of equipment. Consider the possibility of staging new works and the termination of works that have lost their relevance;
- to transfer the work on the creation of a highly-protected tank support vehicle (OCD "Frame") into the priority category;
- to intensify work on the creation of a single chassis for a family of combat and auxiliary machines weighing 30–60 tons on the nodes and assemblies of the new tank (code “One volume”). Expand work on the track unified chassis for machines weighing 10 - 25 tons ;
- prepare and send to the Rear of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation proposals on the creation of a family of armored vehicles of logistics support for the transportation of ammunition, fuel and lubricants, other military-technical and rear assets, as well as the evacuation of the wounded;
- to intensify work on the creation of equipment and livelihoods for servicemen who meet the requirements of modern combat;
- provide for work on: development of concrete-cutting, incendiary, lighting and other types of necessary shots for all existing and developed artillery pieces; the creation of high-explosive, incendiary and smoke grenades for existing and developed anti-tank grenade launchers; the development of ammunition (combat units) for non-lethal destruction for use in peacekeeping operations and local conflicts; constructive refinement of artillery systems in order to increase the survivability of the barrels ".
I hope, now it is clear, where do the “legs” grow from the perspective platforms “Armata” and “Kurganets-25”, and other army-reforming movements?
It would seem that with such an attitude of the military, the industry had to turn and spin like a scalded. However, our Generales are scurrying around for the time being, it hurts the muzzle over which they were slapped. And as soon as the pain subsides and the wounds heal, they again and again put the bolt on new developments. So it was with the "One-volume". After reconciliation with Chechnya, Russia has no money for new armored vehicles, especially as an auxiliary one. In the early 2000s, the ROC was discontinued.
Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, I cannot show how real-designed cars looked. However, illustrations about them give illustrations to patents. For example, to the description of the utility model to the patent “The complex of armored tracked vehicles” from UKBTM (Application 2006101102/02 of January 18, 2006).
Structural scheme of the complex
Air flow pattern in MTO
Armored Maintenance Workshop with Front MTO
RZSO with front MTO and removed cabin
Fuel-servicing truck with rear logistics and remote cabin
Fuel-servicing truck with rear logistics and remote cabin It directly indicates the abbreviation UBSH, but the description of the complex is constructed in relation to the nodes and assemblies of the T-90 tank. Although in fact, we should again talk about the T-95. Actually, the whole difference lies in the fact that the sketches in the patent are depicted on a 6-base, and the real projects - on a 7-base. As for MTO, in the patent that the schemes, that the description is at least veiled, but nevertheless concern the real MTO with the 2B12-3 engine. The Omsk patent RU2399856C2 dated 09/20/2010 (application 2009100465/02 dated January 11, 2009) “Unified low-power chassis for military tracked vehicles” also shows a fairly close and realistic image of the machines created within the framework of the “One-volume”. This was possible due to the fact that the level of secrecy by that time had decreased slightly.
Chassis with front mtto and side view cabin
Chassis with front mtto and remote cockpit view from the top
Chassis with rear-mounted logistics and rear view cabin side view
Chassis with rear MTO and a remote cabin view from the top
An example of the location of the "payload" (SAU) on the chassis of both types
It is worth adding that Omsk machines had a factory index of “Item 650” with the addition of the corresponding UBSH cipher to it.

State trials of Russia’s Armata tank to begin in 2019
MOSCOW, December 31. /TASS/. Russia’s T-14 tank based on the Armata platform will undergo state trials in the Defense Ministry’s scientific and research institutions next year, the ministry’s press service said on Monday.
"The T-14 tank, which has been created on the universal Armata platform and developed for the Ground Forces, is completing the manufacturer’s trials. The fighting vehicle in 2019 will start undergoing state trials in the Russian Defense Ministry’s scientific and research institutions," the ministry said.
The T-14 is the world’s only post-war third-generation tank. Armata is Russia’s development, which has no counterparts in the world.

Good. They finished the vinegar pickling of T-14 at factory level. Now they begin the vinegar pickling of T-14 at state level.
But probably Russia does not need to rush since Western MBTs do not really make considerable progress, either...

This is not rushing... there is an enormous way to go yet...
This is T-14, which is the MBT version of Armata.
The T-15 is the IFV version of Armata.
There is going to be a whole family of T series vehicles from gun and rocket artillery (ie Coalition and Smerch), through engineer, and APC, and air defence vehicles including Missile and gun and Missile only vehicles... (ie Pantsir based and TOR based)... there will be recon vehicles, ATGM vehicles (Like the BRDM-3 with Kornet etc)...
And then they are going to have all the same vehicles in the Kurganets family and all the same vehicles in the Boomerang family and the same vehicles in the Typhoon family...
The sensors and systems and weapons will be largely unified... tanks have 125mm guns, IFVs have 57mm high velocity guns, APCs might have 57mm long barrel grenade launchers, etc etc.
