April 14 - RIA Novosti. Russia's position on the world market of heavy armored vehicles (BBT) look inconsistent, to change the situation, a qualitative leap in the creation of a new generation of armored vehicles, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Deputy Director, Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Konstantin Makiyenko.
As noted Makienko, on the one hand, due to export T-90S tanks (primarily contracts with India and Algeria) Russia from 2000 to 2009 became nominally the world's largest exporter of tanks, new buildings, but at the same time, significant breakthroughs outside India and Algeria, this machine is not provided.
Moreover, a certain stagnation of the technical level of the T-90 with an increase in its value has led to the fact that China with its export tanks VT1A able by the end of the decade to reach the level of competitiveness in relation to T-90, the expert said.
In this case, according to Makienko, China as a cheaper tank for export begins to offer its tanks such as 96, and in the future may bring to the market and your main tank type 99, thus creating a niche in this wide range of proposals to combat capabilities and value . Alarm signal can be considered, and the loss of T-90 in the Malaysian tender Polish Main Battle Tank PT-91M (based on the Soviet T-72).
The disadvantage of the Russian market positioning of main battle tank is the narrowness of the Russian proposals, the proposed designs and aging in general is a clear lack of flexibility in responding to market demands and needs of potential clients. Russian tank development, said Makiyenko, need some kind of breakthrough for a new generation of armored vehicles. Such a breakthrough can be achieved only by bringing in a fairly short period of time prior to the actual state of the existing tank platforms, such as T-90AM.
T-90AM (object 188M) - a new modernized version of the T-90 development of the Urals Transport Machinery Design Bureau (UKBTM). The car has received a new tower with the new autoloader with the placement of the ammunition in the rear niche, new monitoring devices, improved security, possibly installing a new 125-mm 2A82 gun. In this guise tank roughly corresponds to the most modern western third generation machines. В 2009-2010 годы были построены несколько опытных образцов Т-90АМ, Russian Defense Ministry with respect to it is still uncertain, and it is not clear whether the machine will develop, says the analyst.
As noted Makienko, long time, the development tank production in Russia associated with the creation of a new generation of tank UKBTM "object 195" (sometimes referred to as T-95), a fundamentally new design. This machine had the location of the crew in an isolated compartment in the body, issued placement of weapons (152 mm and 30 mm gun), new surveillance systems and fire control, tank management information systems, active protection systems, motors promising types. Prototypes of the tank were tested, but in 2010 research and development program was stopped the Russian Defense Ministry on the pretext of excessive cost and complexity of the tank.

And the Western tanks are no more in production neither in US, neither in UK, neither in France, neither in Germany.

So the contracts for Algeria and Turkeminstan (the follow on ones mentioned a few days ago) amount to another 150 tanks. Not bad!

T-90S has been demonstrated in Peru.
I hope Russia gives them a favorable long term deal, because otherwise I don't see how it will be affordable.

Probably the same loan system (hey just take it you don't need to pay us) that they used for Bangladesh.TR1 wrote:http://www.vestnik-rm.ru/news-4-6055.htm

Sometime down the line we'll see Rosatom building NPPs there and/or some other Russian corporations in natural gas/oil/metallurgy/vehicle construction projects, while the loan may be repaid eventually or it could just be written off in a couple of decades.

Peru isn't some shady dictatorship though, they just have defense needs and a tight financial situation. The support + training costs would all eventually bear fruit for Russia.
I am not familiar, what happened in Bangladesh?
Getting a foot in there in front of the Chinese is a good long term strategy IMO.

Nothing much happened in Bangladesh; Russia just gave them a loan (presumably low-interest or whatever) to buy all this stuff - and then hope that the loan would be paid back.TR1 wrote:Peru isn't some shady dictatorship though, they just have defense needs and a tight financial situation. Judging by the Soviet experience, when it comes to giving 3rd world countries loans - it's quite possible that they would not pay it back at all; much less paying it back on time.
Well Rosatom is building or looking to be building NPPs in Bangladesh, and there are some other deals; so I guess dues get paid one way or the other; Russia is not the USSR to be handing out money like candy from a pinata.

India, China interested in buying Russia’s new tanks Armata - media
The new weapons demonstrated at the parade would be first supplied to the Russian army and only in perspective would be sold to foreign states, president’s aide said
MOSCOW, June 4. /TASS/. India, China and Southeast Asia countries have shown interests to new Russian armoured vehicles demonstrated during the Victory Parade on May 9, Russian president’s aide for military technical cooperation Vladimir Kozhin said in an interview with the Izvestia daily published on Thursday.
According to Kozhin, Russia’s traditional partners are interested in buying infantry combat vehicles and Armata tanks. "Interest has been demonstrated. The weapons are new and expensive. For the most part, by our traditional partners: India, China and Southeast Asia," he said.
He said that the new weapons demonstrated at the parade would be first supplied to the Russian army and only in perspective would be sold to foreign states. So far, Russia is selling weapons under current orders.
In a military parade on Moscow’s Red Square on May 9, the Russian military displayed a variety of armored cars, including the Tiger and the Typhoon vehicles, and newest means of transportation for the Airborne Troops, infantry combat vehicles BMD-4M.
The tank section of the march-past featured the T90A tanks and a new arrival in the field, the Armata tank that has an entirely new multirole platform, which the manufacturer, the world-famous Uralvagonzavod corporation plans to use for a long range of other army vehicles.
The newspaper cites experts as saying that it would be possible to speak about commercial lots only in a span of three years.

Russian tank producer to demonstrate T-90MS main battle tank adapted for Arab countries
The demonstration of the tank’s combat capabilities will "surely attract new potential customers," an official of the tank manufacturer said
MOSCOW, August 24. /TASS/. Russia’s manufacturer Uralvagonzavod will demonstrate the combat capabilities of the T-90MS main battle tank adapted for Arab states at the Russia Arms Expo 2015 (RAE-2015) exhibition in Nizhny Tagil in the Urals, Uralvagonzavod Deputy CEO Alexei Zharich said on Monday.
"At this exhibition, we’ll demonstrate the T-90MS tank specially adapted for Arab countries. In Abu Dhabi [at the IDEX-2105 arms exhibition], we demonstrated the tank’s static capabilities, whereas now its combat potential will be displayed," Zharich said.
The demonstration of the tank’s combat capabilities will "surely attract new potential customers," the Uralvagonzavod official said.
The T-90MS is a modernized version of the T-90 tank and was demonstrated for the first time at the RAE-2011. Uralvagonzavod believes the new model has good prospects on the armaments market of the Middle East. Specifically, the tank has successfully passed trials in Kuwait.
Compared with the basic version, the T-90MS features a more powerful engine, a new air conditioner, the reinforced armor and a machine gun mounted on the turret.
The RAE-2015 arms exhibition will be held in Nizhny Tagil on September 9-12.

Tanks exports
Russia’s Uralvagonzavod ready to look at Armata tank exports to foreign countries
MOSCOW, September 14. /TASS/. Russia’s Uralvagonzavod, a manufacturer of railway cars and defence-related machines, said on Monday it is ready to look at possible exports of the new-generation tanks, T-14 Armata, to foreign buyers.
"We had a lot of talks with various delegations in the framework of the recent Russian Arms Expo (RAE-2015) - all demonstrated interest in buying these products,"Uralvagonzavod’s director general Oleg Siyenko, told the Ekho Moskvy radio station. "But so far, it is beyond the current agenda. Our priority is to equip our own armed forces with state-of-the-art hardware. But from the point of view of the economy, undoubtedly, we would like to export these products in future."
He said among potential buyer could be countries with big defence budgets, such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar. "Sure, there is interest from Europe too," he noted.
Earlier, Russian Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov said Russia was ready to discuss with its foreign partners possible supplies of Armata tanks after 2020, when Uralvagonzavod was through with the orders under the state armaments programme.
The Armata is a commonized heavy platform that has served as a basis for a tank and an IFV. An armored recovery vehicle is being derived from it too.
The new tank is furnished with an unmanned turret, all-digital controls and an isolated armored crew compartment. Its main armament is a 125-mm gun, but the introduction of a 152-mm gun sometime in the future is a possibility.

Will Thailand Buy Russian T-90 Tanks?

Thai may go t90

http://thediplomat.com/2016/01/will-thailand-buy-russian-t-90-tanks/
Thailand is considering buying an unknown number of Russian-made T-90S or MS main battle tanks (MBT). According to the website Defence Blog, a Thai delegation visited the Russian city of Nizhny Tagil, the site of the largest main battle tank manufacturer in the world.
The Royal Thai Army delegation expressed interest in both the T-90(M)S and the T-14 Armata MBT – dubbed “Russia’s deadliest tank” (See: “It’s Official: Russia’s Deadliest Tank Will Be Ready for Battle in 2020”). However, the export version of the T-14 MBT is still in the development stage and would not be ready in time to replace Thailand’s aging fleet of M48A5 ‘Patton’ tanks.
In 2011, Thailand placed a $240 million order for the purchase of 49 Ukrainian-made T-84 ‘Oplot-M’ MBTs plus a number of support vehicles with Ukrspetsexport, a Ukrainian state-owned defense contractor. Yet, by the end of 2015, only ten tanks had been delivered to the Royal Thai Army, causing concern over future delays among high-ranking officers in the Royal Thai Army.
Five additional tanks are slated for delivery in early 2016, according Ukrspetsexport, although sources say that Bangkok might opt out of the contract due to the delays altogether. (Thailand was originally supposed to receive 20 T-84 tanks in 2015.)
One indication for doing so is the creation of a new special Thai committee to evaluate alternatives to the T-84 MBT. Based on local media reports, the committee has narrowed it down to two models – the Russian-made T-90 (or T-90MS) or the Chinese-made VT-4/MBT-3,000.

Not very good news coming up today.
T-90MS offered to Thai army at $7.5m per unit, while MBT3000 offered at $5.5m.
That mean T-90MS offered at 600m ruble a unit by today's exchange rate.
I wasn't sure how true is it but this coming from very reliable military-journalist who working in this field for almost 40 years.
He doesn't mention other detail on both offers though.

Re: Russian Tanks Exports
Guaranteed it isnt that much without spare parts, training, etc. Add to that, after the ruble devaluation, costs for exports drastically dropped. Even the MBT price is really high too. So I imagine it is a contract that covers more.
As well, T-90 is proven, the mbt series are apparently questionable quality at best.
