    Russia - Algeria military contracts - Page 4 Rostov_na_donu_project_636_002.t

Producing any modern MBT, hell even just a T-72A, requires a pretty sophisticated industrial economy.
Advanced metallurgical industries for one thing, for the production of the alloys needed for the armour.
I presume the electronics, ammo, etc... would all be supplied directly from Russia. But if Russia supplies the armor as well - that would pretty much just relegate Algeria to assembling the tank, not much actual production would be involved.

I wouldn't think that Algeria has much of a metallurgical industry. Am I wrong?

Thanks Black-Swan, remains to be seen if that news portal recycled older news about the Tigers, or there was finally a contract signed recently (i had the impression the Tigers were dropped, Algeria deciding to buy the C28As and the MEKOs).

Anyway, let's not forget this big news from late 2013:
    http://vestnik-rm.ru/news-4-6600.htm

    more T-90 (under licence)- checked
    more Kilos- checked
    Tiger corvettes- possibly checked?
    Mi-28-checked
    Mi-26- checked

So remains to be seen the status for S-400, Tor and other SAMs (Buk?), Su-34, more Su-30MKA, more Yak-130 and other items (BMPT?)

Algeria has been a good client of russian arms but i cant understand why this country buys too much military hardware. I dont think they have any threats from any countries in their boundaries that could be considered as potential enemies

Algeria considers Morocco a threat as well as instability from AQIM from the south and East (Mali, Libya). It has a huge territory to cover and thus the focus on airmobility / long range aircraft.

They also have a pretty long coast on the Mediterranean...

and having an overtly powerful military is a good deterrent to Qatar and Saudi in their "ideas"... see Libya, Iraq, Syria for counter examples... where perceived weakness caused such islamists to be sent in en masse.

They had a massive civil war in the 1990's, just as big as the one you see in Syria, financed by the same Gulf State parties. The fact remains that Algeria is one of the most geo-strategically important countries in the world. For example an offensive and defensive missile base, or even a naval base capable of supporting ships logistically that housed S-500 missiles could seriously undermine NATO's offensive/defensive missile capabilities, plus Algeria has a ton of oil. There's been rumors circulating that if Syria falls to Islamists, then Algeria would be next.

Yes, Morocco could eventually start financing Islamists to cause another civil war in Algeria, as Morocco is already financing Islamists in to Mali and the Sahel.

As I already mentioned before if Syria falls, then Morocco and the Gulf Monarchies will likely shift their attention to Algeria, as Algeria is rich in natural resources, plus it's strategic territory (just like Cuba) could be used to base land and naval Russian ABM's to undermine NATO ABM's and nukes in Europe.
