Putin apologized to Aliyev for the incident with the AZAL plane
Vladimir Putin called Ilham Aliyev and apologized for the tragic incident. He noted that the plane was landing amid Ukrainian drone attacks on cities in the North Caucasus.
During a conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, President Vladimir Putin apologized for the fact that the tragic incident with the AZAL plane occurred in Russian airspace, the Kremlin reports.
The leaders discussed the situation during a call initiated by the Russian side.
“Vladimir Putin apologized for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace, and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
The Kremlin noted that the Azerbaijani plane attempted to land at the Grozny airport several times. “At that time, Grozny, Mozdok, and Vladikavkaz were attacked by Ukrainian combat unmanned aerial vehicles, and Russian air defense systems repelled these attacks,” the statement said.
The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article on violation of traffic safety rules and operation of air transport (Article 263 of the Criminal Code); civilian and military specialists are being questioned.
Two employees of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office, together with representatives of the Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia, are working together in Grozny. In Aktau, where the plane crashed, the relevant agencies are also cooperating, the Kremlin noted.
The plane crashed three days ago, on December 25. It was flying from Baku to Grozny, and twice unsuccessfully tried to land at the Chechen airport due to fog and poor visibility, as well as the "Carpet Plan," which requires the immediate landing or removal of all aircraft in the air from a certain area, Rosaviatsia reported. Of the 67 people on board, 38 died, including seven Russians.
AZAL called the cause "physical and technical external interference," and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport also reported "external interference."
The day after the plane crash, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked to comment on the versions of the plane crash. In response, he reminded that any aviation incident is subject to investigation by specialized agencies, and called for not “building any hypotheses” until the investigation is complete. “And we, of course, cannot do this, and no one should do this – we need to wait until this investigation is complete,” Peskov added.
