    Vietnam can always buy T-50/FA-50 or L-15 when you think they are superior. As for Russia they have their own plan.

    @Xeno
    Vietnam is also a recent Yak-130 customer so they probably won't need those anytime soon.

    @Fender
    You have a lot of Soviet/Russian combat aircraft in service for decades now. Are you looking at Korean or Japanese replacements?

    @Mir, Fender, xeno, Garry:

    For me as a Vietnamese, I never claim that Russia stuff is inferior. On the other hand I personally believe Russian stuffs are much better in cost effectiveness.

    But the keywords for Vietnam is "self-manufacture". If not all the craft then at least some part of it must be manufactured themselves.

    So they may engage in the deals that they perceive they can purchase the technology or manufacture lines - at least parts of it.

    Or may be Vietnam is engaging in other more important deals with Russia but nobody feels the needs to say it out loud. Who knows.

    I assume Vietnam has experience in this field of manufacturing engines? Or, are you just smoking whatever agent orange infested local weed?

    Because nothing the Jl-10 can be classified as stability especially in its engines. Chinese engines are still far behind.

    The Russians need to improve the reliability of engines, diverse weapons such as T-50/FA-50, JL-10.

    Russian engines tend to have shorter operational lives than western types, but that often leads to them being rather cheaper too.

    Plus engines with shorter lives also have more overhauls and tests which means problems get identified faster.

    If China and Pakistan are happy for RD-33 engines to be used in their single engined MiG-21 replacement well that suggests a level of confidence.

    Their new generation engines seem to use all the latest western type technology, yet as we see with two murdered Boeing whistle blowers things are not perfect in other places either.

    It is not just that Russia makes all its own stuff, but that they are willing to start joint ventures and local production for things that most western companies refuse to do that makes them interesting.

    They are not fools and are hardly going to give away engine technology just because a country buys some for their aircraft.

    @Garry: if my memory is correct the perceived "shorter life span" of Russian crafts is because off different criteria and calculations which make life span on paper of Russian crafts is shorter than it actually is. If both the West and Russia using the same criteria for measuring then the lifespan of Russian crafts is not short at all.
