Russian air forces will take delivery of three Il-76MD-90A aircraft in 2015
    Russian Aviaton » Tuesday June 30, 2015 17:46 MSK

Aviastar-SP, one of the largest enterprises of Russia’s aircraft industry, will deliver a total of three latest Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft in 2015, RIA Novosti reports with reference to Aviastar-SP CEO Sergey Dementyev.

A contract for delivery of 39 Il-76MD-90A aircraft to Russian Ministry of Defense was signed in 2012. Under the contract the first jet of the type was delivered to the ministry in April 2015.

“Production of Il-76MD-90A is the enterprise’s top-priority project. In 2015 the plant delivered one jet of the type. Under the contract with the Ministry of Defense Aviastar will deliver two more Il-76MD-90A aircraft this year,” the enterprise’s press-service noted.

In late May Il-76MD-90A MSN 0105 was delivered from the Aviastar’s final assembly workshop to Spektr-Avia responsible for painting the jet. All the necessary aircraft systems and equipment were installed; the jet’s cockpit is fitted with state-of-the-art avionics. Leakage tests of the wing box and wing stub box have been successfully completed, the press-service noted.

“After the painting is complete, the ground tests of the new Il-76MD-90A will continue,” Aviastar reports. After that the jet will be delivered to the customer. Il-76MD-90A was derived from the proven Il-76 aircraft developed by Ilyushin Company”.

Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu said earlier that mass production of the new version of Il-76 aircraft is being carried out in Ulyanovsk “without any cooperation with foreign suppliers and partners”.

The latest navigation equipment, automatic control system, communications system and glass cockpit meet all the existing requirements for aircraft avionics and help improve the flight safety and precision of aircraft navigation. The replacement of D-30KP2 engines with more advanced PS-90A-76 ones, installation of upgraded wing and reinforced landing gear significantly expand the jet’s operational capabilities.

In February 2015 Ilyushin Company Deputy CEO Sergey Artyukhov said that a possibility of placing additional orders for Il-76MD-90A in the network of State Arms Program for 2015-2025 is being considered. He also said the Ilyushin Company views India and China as potential customers for Il-76MD-90A.

Aviastar-SP is one of the largest enterprises of Russian aircraft industry. The plant specializes in production of Il-76MD-90A military-transport aircraft, passenger and cargo jets of Tu-204 Family, maintenance and overhaul of An-124 Ruslan aircraft. Moreover, the enterprise is responsible for installation of interior and testing of some systems of Sukhoi SuperJet 100 aircraft. The plant also takes part in production of the new short- and medium-haul MS-21 aircraft.

A solemn ceremony dedicated to rollout of the second Il-76MD-90A intended for Ministry of Defense was held in Ulyanovsk
    Russian Aviaton » Thursday July 30, 2015 12:19 MSK

A solemn ceremony dedicated to rollout of another Il-76MD-90A military-transport aircraft painted in livery of the Russian Ministry of Defense was held on June 9th 2015 in Ulyanovsk, TASS reports.

“The same month the jet was delivered to the Ilyushin Company’s flight test and development base; it will be handed over to the customer in August. It is planned that the aircraft would participate in MAKS-2015 airshow,” Aviastar-SP CEO Sergey Dementyev said.
Follow us on: Follow ruaviation on Twitter

The Governor of Ulyanovsk Region Sergey Morozov added that the jet would be named after the outstanding aircraft designer Viktor Livanov. “As a pilot I have been operating the Il aircraft for 30 years. It is a great aircraft, I love it and hope that it will serve Russia for years to come,” Commander-in-Chief of the military-transport aviation Vladimir Benediktov said.

All the necessary aircraft systems and equipment have been installed and a number of tests have already been completed. Now the aircraft (MSN 0105) will undergo ground and production flight tests. It will be the second airliner of the type delivered to Russian Ministry of Defense under a contract for delivery of 39 Il-76MD-90A jets. The contract worth 140 billion rubles was signed in 2012. Deliveries should be completed by 2020. However, in early June Benediktov said that the armed forces would take delivery of only 30 jets of the type by 2020.

Just develop new engines for it and stop wasting time with hacks. If it takes 10 years to do this then so be it.
I bet they would waste 10 years just talking about why things can't be done.

BTW, spending $10 billion on welfare or on aircraft development is the not the same thing as far as the GDP is concerned.
The latter creates jobs and a usable product which brings long term GDP growth. The former is all about feel good populism
that expires almost instantaneously. Russia can find the time and the money to do this right.

Yeah. But the first one is being converted into the fuel tanker (Il-78M-90A) and the second one is being converted into AEW (A-100). So in a sense it's a first serial cargo Il-76MD-90A.

Russia to fill gap left by An-70 with more Il-76MD-90A airlifters

    http://www.janes.com/article/57172/russia-to-fill-gap-left-by-an-70-with-more-il-76md-90a-airlifters

Russia is to fill the gap left in its strategic airlift capabilities by the abandonment of the Antonov An-70 project with Ukraine with additional numbers of the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A, a senior service official said on 13 January.

The Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) is to receive an undisclosed extra number of the newly introduced Il-76MD-90A to offset at least some of the 60 An-70s that the service was due to induct, of which more than 12 were to be handed over by 2020, the commander of the Military Transport Aviation, Lieutenant General Victor Benedictine, reportedly told Russian journalists.

Co-development of the An-70 with Ukraine was ceased in early 2014 following the breakdown in relations between the two countries over the ousting of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and Russia's subsequent invasion and annexation of Crimea. With relations no better some two years later, Russia appears now to have abandoned the four-engined turboprop aircraft entirely, in favour of its own upgraded jet airlifter.

The VVS has received the first of 30 Il-76MD-90A aircraft that are expected to be delivered by 2020. Also referred to as the Il-476, the Il-76MD-90A is an upgraded variant of the Soviet-era Il-76 'Candid' that features a digital 'glass' cockpit as well as modernised flight, navigation, and communication systems. Structural improvements include a modified wing and reinforced landing gear. The engines have also been updated, giving the aircraft a 60-tonne payload (up from 40 tonnes for the baseline Il-76) and a 12% reduced fuel consumption.

The upgraded platform can fly up to 8,500 km with a 20-tonne payload (or 4,100 km with a 50-tonne load), which compares favourably to the 6,598 km with a 20-tonne payload of the An-70. The Il-76MD-90A has a 60-tonne payload compared with 47 tonnes for the An-70.

Previously the VVS has stated a requirement for 100 such aircraft (as well as about 40 Il-76MD-90A-derived Il-478 tankers and an expected 20 A-100 Airborne Warning And Control System [AWACS] platforms), of which 30 have so far been contracted.

Not really 1on1 replacement i was hoping for but oh well. I always had thing for 4 engined medium lifters with turboprop engines.

Today, the second Il-76MD-90A newest transport aircraft landed on the Ivanovo Aerospace Forces center airfield.

Before arriving at the center, the aircraft was completely checked by engineers and pilots.

The first such aircraft was put into service of the center in the early December, 2015. It has already been used in scheduled flights.

Crew of the second aircraft is to start operating on the transport in the nearest future.

This is the modern modification of Il-76MD aircraft and designed for performing landing and parachute assault operations, long-range transporting personnel and heavy cargos.

    I gather this good news:

The first upgraded Ilyushin Il-76MDM (NATO reporting name: Candid) military and transport aircraft has performed its first flight at the airfield of the Gromov Flight Research Institute near Moscow, a TASS correspondent reports from the scene.

After the successful flight, the test pilots from the Ilyushin Aviation Company who operated the aircraft were greeted by Ilyushin CEO Sergei Velmozhkin.

"This is a new upgrade of the Il-76MD aircraft in service with Russia’s Aerospace Force. The new aircraft has a lot of new equipment, a new navigation complex, new systems to improve its transportation and combat flight characteristics in its missions to carry troops and military hardware," Ilyushin test pilot Nikolai Kuimov said.

The aircraft’s nose-based electro-optical sight system allows observing landing areas and any facilities both in the infrared and the optical bands. Also, the Il-76MDM aircraft is equipped with a satellite navigation system that meets all the requirements and rules for flights along Russian and foreign air routes that both exist and will appear in future.

"This is a good aircraft. It flies excellently and shows all the best the Il-76 plane incorporates," Kuimov said.

The Ilyushin Aviation Company is currently working on two projects for Russia’s Aerospace Force. In particular, it is upgrading in-service Il-76 aircraft and Il-78 (Midas) refueling tankers and manufacturing modernized versions of these planes.

The first Il-76 aircraft arrived for its upgrade in 2014. Its upgrade was expected to complete in December 2015.
A new defensive suite mounted on the upgraded Il-76MDM aircraft will defend it from all hostile weapon systems, chief designer of the Il-76 aircraft Andrei Yurasov said.

"The defensive suite will defend the upgraded Il-76MDM aircraft from all hostile weapon systems," the chief designer said. According to him, the aircraft’s defensive suite includes infrared decoys and other systems.

The upgrade aimed to extend the service life of serial-produced Il-76 combat aircraft that are currently accomplishing various tasks in Russia and beyond its borders, Yurasov said.

"This work was aimed at replacing parts and items that are no longer produced in Russia rather than improving the aircraft’s flight characteristics considerably," the chief designer said.

This work has been done and the aircraft with new equipment can accomplish more complex combat and transportation tasks. "The new aircraft has better pilotage and radio communications characteristics," Yurasov said.

The most interesting feature seems to be the instalation of a DIRCM suite.

I don't see a DIRCM suite... I do see FLIR ball just in front of the nose windows, but no DIRCM turrets.
