China says in talks with Russia over 2015 military drills

by Staff Writers Beijing (AFP) Nov 27, 2014

China's defence ministry said Thursday that it was in talks with Russian counterparts about joint military exercises next year, after Moscow announced drills were planned for the Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Ocean.  Chinese defence ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng told reporters at a monthly briefing that China and Russia were "conducting consultation" over next year's joint military exercises.  But after Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu visited Beijing last week, Moscow's defence ministry said in a statement: "New joint naval exercises are planned next spring in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.  Joint exercises are also planned in the Pacific Ocean."  The prospect of joint exercises by the two military powers in the Mediterranean is likely to raise eyebrows in Europe given what is seen there as increased muscle-flexing by Russia after it annexed Crimea and supported rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Russian Navy to Continue Anti-Piracy Mission off Coast of Somalia

Currently, Russia's anti-piracy mission is performed by the squadron of Northern Fleet warships led by submarine chaser Severomorsk. Russian warships have been carrying out the mission to ensure the safety of navigation in the Horn of Africa and Gulf of Aden since 2008.

MOSCOW, January 2 (Sputnik) — Warships and support vessels of Russian Navy will continue to perform tasks to prevent pirate attacks on civilian ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa, Navy commander-in-chief Adm. Viktor Chirkov said Friday.

Currently, Russia's anti-piracy mission is performed by the squadron of Northern Fleet warships led by submarine chaser Severomorsk, which is expected to guide four convoys of various classes vessels through potentially hazardous areas.

"It is expected that 4-5 campaigns of [Russia's] Northern and Pacific fleets warships will be organized during the year in areas of increased pirate activity off the African east coast. To support the activities of these squadrons, additional vessels (tankers, rescue vessels) of all [Russian] fleets will be involved," Chirkov said.

The scheme of Russian warships actions in the Gulf of Aden will remain unchanged and will include the organization of the escort of civil ships convoys. The training for the inspection and anti-terror groups will be implemented at the permanent bases of the fleets, as well as at the Joint Training Center of the Navy in St. Petersburg.

The struggle against pirates in the Gulf of Aden is conducted as part of the 2008 EU Naval mission Atalanta and the NATO operation Ocean Shield launched in 2009. The latter, in addition to the primary task of combating piracy, is also expected to help countries in the region to launch their own measures against the threat.

Russian warships have been carrying out the mission to ensure the safety of navigation in the Horn of Africa and Gulf of Aden since 2008.

    http://news.usni.org/2015/07/17/china-russia-planning-20-ship-naval-exercise-in-the-sea-of-japan-in-august

China and Russia will conduct their largest joint Pacific exercise in August near Japan, Russian Navy planners announced on Friday.

Announced last year, Joint Sea Exercise 2015 will occur in both the Sea of Japan and off the cost of Russian region of Primorsky — about 250 miles away from Japan.

“These maneuvers will for the first time involve a joint amphibious assault drill in Russia’s Primorsky territory with the participation of carrier-based aircraft,” Russian Pacific Fleet spokesman Roman Martov said, reported the Russian TASS wire service.

“Representatives of the headquarters of the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Navy of the People’s Liberation Army of China have carried out major work for the planning of the Chinese warships’ visit to Vladivostok port, the cultural program, sports competitions and all the tactical events of the sea, land and air parts of the maneuvers.”

Since 2011, Russia and China have conducted regular joint exercises.

Last year was the largest series of exercises, the Russian Navy and the PLAN drilled with 14 surface ships, two submarines, aviation assets and special operation forces (SOF), according to Chinese media.

The Pacific drills follow the first ever joint Chinese-Russian exercise in the Mediterranean sea earlier this year. The much smaller exercise featured three Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and six Russian.

In November, said Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the combined military-to-military between China and Russia partnership was growing.

“We believe that the main goal of pooling our effort is to shape a collective regional security system,” Shoigu said.
“We also expressed concern over U.S. attempts to strengthen its military and political clout in the [Asia-Pacific Region].”

Russia Discloses Number of Warships It Has Throughout the World's Oceans

More than eighty Russian Navy ships of various classes currently remain on duty at sea, according to the country's Defense Ministry.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that more than 80 naval ships of various classes are currently on mission in different areas of the World Ocean, including the Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The 'World Ocean' is the interconnected system of Earth's oceanic waters, comprising all of the oceans and seas of the world.

The information was disclosed in a Defense Ministry press service message dedicated to Russia's Navy Day.

"Right now, the scheduled tasks in different areas of the World Ocean are being implemented by more than eighty warships and support vessels of various classes. Intense preparations are underway in the run-up to the research vessel Admiral Vladimir's unprecedented voyage to Antarctica, due to begin between November and December 2015. The goal is to deal with the oceanographic and hydrographic research of water and the coastal areas of Antarctica," the press service said.

In particular, more than ten warships and supply vessels are now on duty in the Mediterranean as part of Russia's permanent naval task force in this area, according to the Defense Ministry.

The press service also said that the group of warships led by the guards missile cruiser Moskva of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is currently carrying out a number of tasks in the South Atlantic.

Also on duty are Russian naval ships in the Gulf of Aden and near the Horn of Africa, where they are tasked with ensuring civilian navigation security.

In addition, the press service said that the two diesel-electric submarines of Project 636, the Novorossiysk and the Rostov-on-Don, will enter service when they join the Russian Black Sea Fleet later this year.

"The headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet's submarine squadron has been established in the city of Novorossiysk; the crews were trained earlier at a Russian naval center," the press service said.

Meanwhile, a new generation of ships is reportedly being built for the Black Sea Fleet; they will include six patrol ship class units capable of escorting ships, containing sea pirates and maintaining stationing site safety.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry pledged to respond in kind to the modernization of US warships, and equipped them with missile defense systems.

The ministry said that Moscow will take appropriate technical retaliatory measures, adding that since the beginning of 2010, the Pentagon has purchased 200 interceptor missiles, and will buy 50 more before the end of this year.

Russian Navy’s Mediterranean grouping can get new Project 11356 frigates

The ships are armed, among other things, with the Kalibr-NK missile system and 100-mm A-190 versatile gun and air defense, torpedo and antisubmarine weapons

MOSCOW, September 2. /TASS/. Project 11356 frigates will be capable of effective operation as part of a Russian standing naval force in the Mediterranean. They will be used for fighting pirates near Africa’s coast as well if need be, Capt. 1st Rank Vladimir Tryapichnikov, chief of the Russian Navy Shipbuilding Department, said on Wednesday.

"The endurance, self-contained operation capability and armament of Project 11356 escort ships along with their ability to carry Ka-27PL, Ka-27PS or Ka-31 shipborne helicopters fully meet Russian Navy requirements to the ships making up the Mediterranean naval task force," Tryapichnikov said.

The Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad set afloat the third Project 11356 frigate, the Admiral Makarov, in a ceremony on Wednesday. It is planned to enter the Russian Navy inventory in 2016, and the Navy will receive the first two ships in the series - the Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Essen frigates - before the end of 2015.

The ships in the class have a displacement of 4,000 tons, a speed of up to 30 knots and an endurance of 30 days. They are armed, among other things, with the Kalibr-NK missile system and 100-mm A-190 versatile gun and air defense, torpedo and antisubmarine weapons as well. Each of the ships carries an antisubmarine warfare helicopter.

"A Russian intelligence ship, capable of cutting undersea communications cables and other sensors, has been spotted by the U.S. military off the coast of Kings Bay, Ga., home to the U.S. Navy's East Coast ballistic missile submarine fleet. U.S. military satellites have been tracking the Russian spy ship since it was spotted in the north Atlantic last month and slowly began transiting toward its next destination -- Cuba. A senior military official said the ship is now about 300 miles off the coast of the U.S., as it heads toward the island.

Another senior defense official told Fox News that while the Pentagon is tracking the Russian intel ship, the Russian ship "remains in international waters." When asked if the U.S. had similar spy ships off the coast of Russia, he answered, "Of course we do, what do you think all those 'oceanographic ships' are doing, studying whales?" At the U.S. sub base in Georgia, there are six Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, known as "boomers," each capable of firing 24 Trident intercontinental ballistic missiles. Each missile holds up to 10 independent nuclear warheads. In addition to the ballistic missile subs, there are two other guided-missile subs capable of firing hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles. In January, another Russian spy ship was spotted moored in Havana harbor in Cuba. Russian intel ships have been spotted in Cuba on a number of occasions in the past year. The Washington Free Beacon was first to report the most recent sighting of the Russian spy ship.

In April, the head of the U.S. military's Northern Command, Adm. Bill Gortney, confirmed the presence of two other Russian military ships operating near the United States at the time. Separately, five Chinese warships were spotted in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska during President Obama's visit to the state -- but they have turned around and are heading back in the direction of China, according to a defense official briefed on the latest intelligence Thursday morning. "They were the same ships that took part in the Russian-Chinese naval exercises which recently concluded in the Sea of Japan," the official said."

Some 60 Russian surface ships, submarines on duty in world ocean

Among them there are ships organic to the permanent task group in the Mediterranean and those performing combat training missions in other parts of the world

KRONSHTADT, September 10. /TASS/. Some 60 surface ships and submarines of Russia’s Navy are currently on duty in various parts of the World Ocean, the Navy’s commander, Viktor Chirkov, said on Thursday.

"About 60 combat ships of the Russian Navy are simultaneously on duty in the near and remote areas," Chirkov said after the ceremony of unveiling a monument to Russian fleet commander Fyodor Ushakov in Kronshtadt.

"Among them there are ships organic to the permanent task group in the Mediterranean and those performing combat training missions in the Pacific and Northern fleets, in the Arctic and many areas of the world ocean," Chirkov said.

"This amount is well-justified. It is necessary to ensure the fleet should cope with its task of ensuring the stability and security of national interests," he said.

Russia’s Military Drills in Mediterranean Comply With International Norms

Russia holds military exercises in the Mediterranean on a regular basis, and does so in full compliance with international norms, the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists on Friday.

“Regarding the drills in the Mediterranean, I would say that I don’t have the information on its schedule, but it is a well-known fact that our Navy holds such exercises on a regular basis. They are held in full compliance with the international norms for events of such a scale,” said Sergei Lavrov.

The day before, Russia had warned nearby air carriers about the missile-firing exercises in the Mediterranean, off the Syrian coast, east of Cyprus.

The drills are set to last until September 17.

Also on Friday, the top diplomat said Russia will continue delivering military equipment to Syria to provide it with sorely needed defense capabilities.

The minister underlined that Russia is not simply supporting Syrian president Bashar Assad, but rather Damascus' fight against the Islamic State. He also called on participants of the international coalition against the extremist group to cooperate with the Syrian army.

Russia Northern Fleet Warships Hit All Air Targets During Drills

Russian Navy destroyers Admiral Ushakov and Vice-Admiral Kulakov held successful weapons training exercises against fictional air threats during drills in the Barents Sea, Russia's Northern Fleet press service head said Friday.

The command post drills, involving warships and submarines, commenced in northwestern Russia on Monday. The exercises involve nuclear- and diesel-powered submarines, coastal missile and artillery units, naval aviation forces from the Northern Fleet, and logistical assistance.

"Combat exercises have been carried out by the gun crews of AK-130 universal caliber automatic cannon of the Admiral Ushakov destroyer, of AK-100 installed on Vice-Admiral Kulakov and the AK-630 small-caliber anti-aircraft artillery from both ships," Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga said.

He added that all the Progress cruise missiles (NATO reporting name SS-N-3 Shaddock), used as the targets, were hit successfully by naval artillery.
Fourteen warships, four submarines and 10 support vessels are participating in the drill while naval aviation of the Northern Fleet will carry out 20 missions using four types of aircrafts. The drills will continue until the end of the week.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet Flagship Leaves Crimea for Drills in Mediterranean

The Russian Black Sea Fleet flagship Moskva left the city of Sevastopol for the Turkish Straits to take part in drills in the Mediterranean, the country's Defense Ministry said in a news release issued Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The warship will take part in planned exercises in the eastern Mediterranean as part of a permanent Russian Navy tactical group.

"The crews of Russian ships…will practice the organization of anti-submarine, anti-aircraft and anti-ship defense, search and rescue missions, as well as communication training and assistance to the crews of ships and aircraft in distress at sea," the news release said.

Over 40 different combat exercises will be carried out by the group, including missile and artillery firing at surface and air targets.

Earlier this year, Russian and Egyptian navies carried out joint military exercises involving F-16 fighter jets in the Mediterranean Sea. Russia and China also conducted Mediterranean drills earlier this year.

The Black Sea Fleet is stationed in both Crimea and the neighboring Krasnodar Territory and operates in both the Black and the Mediterranean Seas.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A group of Russian Black Sea Fleet ships has conducted missile and artillery exercises in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea Fleet press attaché Capt. 1st Rank Vyacheslav Trukhachyov said Monday.

“Today, the Black Sea flagship missile cruiser, the Moskva, the Ladny guided missile frigate and the cruisers Pytlivy and Smetlivy….completed firing exercises at marine and air targets using artillery and missile complexes,” Trukhachyov said.

The ships also practiced using chafe and depth charges.

The frigates, Ladny and Privily, of the Black Sea Fleet which were deployed to the eastern Mediterranean for a naval exercise passed through the Bosporus on the 7th and 9th and are returning home.

The cargo ship Yauza, the updated addition to Russian naval auxiliary fleet, made it into the Black Sea on the 29th after her long trip from the Northern Fleet. Her icebreaker bow will be an interesting sight in warmer waters. She looked to be travelling empty so she is probably joining the 'Syrian Express'. She has 4 holds and carries about 90 passengers but I can't trace her cargo carrying capacity.

The large landing ships seem to have given up travelling in pairs and are now often on their own, perhaps it reflects their being released as soon as they are loaded. Must be taking a toll on the crews.
