Another clever idea... a tethered balloon can remain aloft for months and with power supplied through the tether and a fibre optic data link it can actively or passively scan the local territory from a very useful aerial position without burning fuels of any kind so operational costs will be tiny and comparable with a vehicle mounted system but with the view and advantages of an aerial system.

What's this ...barage baloons over Khmeim ?

That particular balloon type I have seen sold to China for use in mountains as a signals repeater to extend network connections and also viewing low flying targets in mountainous areas where ground based radar has trouble.

They are designed to be set up in a tethered mode and operate autonomously for up to three months at a time looking for low flying targets and offering cellphone and navigation coverage over very difficult terrain.

they can carry transponders and signal boosters as well as radar antenna and optical sensor packages depending on the mission with power being supplied via the tether and a fibre optics cable silently transmitting information collected from the air mounted antenna to the vehicle below...

Tethered balloon is good for spotting incoming suicide bomb cars sent by Qaeda in Idlib.

During his two-week business trip to Syria, an American journalist, Bill Newey, spent one at a location of a government unit supported by Russian special forces.

The American believed that the Syrians are fighting well, since they liberated almost the entire territory of the country, however, according to his impression, they are worthless without Russians. The Syrian troops are slightly better organized and equipped from Russia. At the same time, they are worse armed than militants. Only the management has body armor and special equipment.

Bill Newey gave an example of how, together with a convoy of several dozen civilians who were returning from evacuation, he went to one of the villages. The escort was guarded by a unit of the SAR Armed Forces and three Russian special forces.

The convoy included several cars and a bus for women and children, and not a single piece of heavy equipment. At this time, a jeep equipped with a heavy machine gun suddenly flew out from behind the hill at full speed. The SUV headed for the convoy.

One of the Syrians looked through binoculars and shouted that it was a jihadist machine. All Syrian soldiers rushed scattering, almost disappearing from the scene of a future clash.

Meanwhile, from Newey’s story, the Russian special forces remained unperturbed. One of them slapped him on the shoulder and forced him to lie down on the ground. The American journalist considered that his end had come and began to pray, since a heavy machine gun could make a sieve of them.

However, the Russian opened fire on the jeep and managed to damage it, stopping 50 meters from the convoy. At this time, two of his comrades finished off the militants.

“Russians are crazy people. Sometimes it seems to them that it makes no difference: drink coffee, ride a bear or win a war, ”Bill Newey shares his impression.

However, the Americans still can not understand our country, as well as the professional Russian military. For fighters of the Special Operations Forces, this incident is a dangerous and hard work that they can do. Compared to the Russian special forces, Americans sitting on bases and moving forward on armored vehicles after the carpet bombardment lose significantly. According to Bill Newey, Russia should not go to conflict in any way.
