    Russia/USA shooting at Russia/USA?

    Good luck with that.

Kurds are there to soak up the bullets. And soak them up they will.

No my friend. It has always been about one thing and one thing only, Kurdistan. Grabbing land (with oil fields for income for a future "economy)" is a pre-requesite. The U.S provides the umbrella for protection they need. The U.S in return gets a new base of operations in the M.E and weakens both Syria/Iraq...while strategically positioning itself to wreck havoc and destebilize both Turkey(if need be) and Iran. Israel will cheer along and help in this endevour, as will the monarchies with vested interests in seeing Iran weakened to avoid getting swallowed by the Shia crescent and all that it accompanies. Textbook great game chess plays.

Russia's position continues to be muddy on this issue, and particularly weak. Unless the Russians are in on the racket as well, ultimately agreeing with the U.S on many fronts - mainly that curtailing Iran's geopolitical control (and its growth) is beneficial for itself, as well as gaining a dagger with which to poke and stab Turkey (long time foe). That Syria and Iraq get to be sacrificial lambs is, well, collateral damage. Could the Russian elite rationalize something like this? Absolutely, despite what we, ourselves, might want to project as the Russian position, i.e the noble one buried in some strategic 6D Chess.

At this point in the game, both Syria/Iraq have little in say to change the game (as weak and dependent as they're now). The Kurd issue is ultimately an Iranian/Turkish/Iraqui/Syrian problem. Never trust Russia/China/U.S to fix it for ya. The big powers will play their little geopolitical games and will feast on the division, ineptness and lack of decisive action as a united front on this issue - aka you'll get fucked over - it's after all, not their land they're playing with, but a foreign playground.

    Lol, the Turkish SeigSoloyvov here

Russia knows perfectly who is doing what. If the US attacks the Syrian Armed Forces, the retaliation will go to the US paramilitary forces. Not to the Kurds.

Are you naive to think US would send its own troops to frontline? They were pushing like hell the SDF parties mostly composed of kurds to intervene in DeZ battle. If they had their own, what would be their reason to compromise critical time for resource pursuit?

Even if they have their own mercenaries, ratio would be like 1 US operative vs 50 kurdish/sdf militant. What is the plan then?

I bet none of the Kurdish-lovers here dont know what kind of mindset a seperatist kurd has. Secret kurds here cannot hide themselves anymore.

I really wonder what will be their reaction when Russia will have to obey US warnings regarding Kurds, I bet those seperatist fanboys will claim it is "strategic thinking"

Your romantism ends where reality shows up

Two that need an explanation of what a US paramilitary group is.

They have no choice. River crossing by large armoured formations are highly risky if the area is not fully secured. The last thing the SAA needs is to have their pontoon layers and bridge sections deployed, only to come under IS attack (or worse yet, "Coalition" aka "Entente" air-strikes).

Their is nothing the ISIS goat-fuckers or their Yankistani leash-holders would like more than to scupper the pontoons while SAA heavy armour is crossing. Should that happen, Damascus could probably say goodbye to the east bank of the Euphrates for the foreseeable future.

I've noticed something after reading on twitter some comments and articles.

Syria has no problem providing contracts to Iran and China. Yet for some reason, Russia is having to donate to help restore the country (so give for free) and is not obtaining any contracts. Best one was last year for almost $1B but China got way more than that in 1 contract alone.

I think Russia is being too nice to Syria and Assad.

Here , a common thread binds problems in Syria and North Korea . And it is , you guessed it human nature . Or put another way , immediate national interest . Short termism . I' m all right Jack . Perhaps in the days of Socialism , we looked too far ahead . And expected too much from these vile and puny humans . Perhaps now we expect too little .

Did the Russians do a deal with yanks in Syria ? Saying ; east is east and west is west . But home is the best ? East Syria mine , West Syria yours ? I think they did . And it is not 6 D chess . It is not even 1/2 D chess . It is rationalised in terms of immediate self interest . Buck the other guy , my investment is safe . The sanctions are off . I have a billion mouths to feed .

But the world is not our playground . If Syria falls apart at the hands of Kurds , then Turkey is thrown into turmoil . And Russian tourists will not be able to enjoy their holidays there . Now a war zone . And nor will they enjoy a sea view of the Mediterranean , sitting on their deck chairs looking out to sea , with their backs turned away from Asia . Nor will the Chinese enjoy their American investment . When starving north Koreans disturb the peace with a hydrogen bomb . National self interest or short termism is the disease . Now that internationalism is dead .

Russia got two bases permanently in the M.E. It also stopped the pipeline projects to bypass Russian energy for the E.U aka competition - probably the biggest reason it went in after Iran persuaded them. An added benefit will also be a decrease in radical wahabism spreading to the millions of Muslims in Russia as the project intended for one of its many long term side-objectives.

Russia is getting plenty of benefits. Perhaps Russia should have been more proactive in preventing allies from falling to destabilization schemes by the U.S and its lackies instead of putting off the fires after they've been lit. Can't remember the last time an American ally fell to a Russian destabilization effort for geopolitical flip......heck, the Cubans have been more successful in the last 27 years or so than Russia proper at flipping...they just can't sustain the gains against constant onslaught with no umbrella. The Cubans are even planting seeds in Colombia as well, a shuffle of the cards when it comes to strategy - just impossible to say if the seeds ever germinate.

Business will eventually come in areas Russia has competitive advantages over the Chinese.....

    Very unconfirmed.

It seems that they did not cross in force. Seems much more likely that they just sent some scouting or SF parties across.

Perhaps they are planning to set up a checkpoint on the road south.

    Further to post 425

This is ongoing, look what they are spending next year. The Turks will probably not be amused at this as much could end up with the YPG. This is laying the foundations for instability for years to come.

The Department of Defense has budgeted $584 million specifically for this Syrian operation for the financial years 2017 and 2018, and has earmarked another $900 million of spending on Soviet-style munitions between now and 2022. The total, $2.2 billion, likely understates the flow of weapons to Syrian rebels in the coming years.

How annoying, i hope those river crossings get taken/built ASAP, or else the only other option would be dropping in a heavy number of Paratroopers, sadly i doubt Syrian Paratroopers have the heavy equipment necessary for that.
