    Russian Armata Tanks, Armored Vehicles to Become 'Smarter'

    RUSSIA 16:42 24.12.2016(updated 17:26 24.12.2016)

    Russian tanks and combat vehicles will soon sport a state-of-the-art damage control and information system, the newspaper Izvestia reported.

    The unique system, dubbed GALS-D4, will make it much easier for the crews to monitor the gauges and inform their commanding officers about the condition of their fighting vehicles.

    The GALS-D4 ensures stable navigation and keeps in its hard disk memory all information about the vehicle’s whereabouts and condition of the past ten years.

    The complex consists of a microprocessor, computing and navigation modules, each weighing up to 2.5 kilograms and placed under the driver’s and commander’s seats.

    They feed data onto a 20 cm touch-sensitive screen in the commander’s compartment. The GALS-D4 has several modes of operations. In diagnostic mode, information about all of the vehicle’s electronically operated elements is sent to a touch-sensitive screen.

    In navigation mode, a pre-loaded area map is fed to the operator’s screen showing the vehicle’s exact location in real time.

    “The system is still being brought up to speed with the combat modules to be eventually operated via remote-control, Sergei Mosiyenko, chief designer at Volna Central Research Institute, told the newspaper.

    The GALS-D4 is currently installed on a number of Taifun armored cars now being tested by the Defense Ministry and also on the all-new Armata tanks, which boast a number of back-up target acquisition and technical control systems.

    Its all fine and nice but... "hard disk memory"... really? I could understand it 10 years ago but now...

    According to NATO experts we are 20 years behind, looks as if they've miscalculated! We're ten years behind Laughing

    I think someone mixed up ''hard drive'' and ''hard disk''

    Besides, if there is one thing that is easy to replace it's hard disk. Replace with SSD that is...

    Using HDD in such devices is mostly abandoned due to their MAJOR issues with mechanical damage and vibrations. And i cant think of a thing that will have to deal with more vibrations than a tank so i hope this was a mistake by author.

    Doesnt have to be SSD, you can use high cappacity flash memory too, very cheap and good enough for what this is supposed to be. Not all that very complex to start production even.

    SSDs are rapidly getting cheaper and performing better storage wise. It would be silly to assume they will not use the best (and most suited due to speed) hardware available. Minor cost all things considered.

    And why just one? Hell given how dirt cheap they are why not put three as backup? Under every seat for nine total. And put three more somewhere else.

    And put flash memory as extra backup like Militarov said.

    We are discussing tiny details here come to think of it...

    Promising tank T-14 on the "Armata" platform provides the ability to install a 152-mm gun, but at the moment the tank is upgraded gun caliber 125 mm. Nevertheless, the Russian Ministry of Defense is still deliberately put a 152-mm gun on a limited number of tanks T-14.

    Attempts by the introduction of 152-mm guns in domestic tanks

    The first tank with a 152 mm gun LP-83 was "Object 292" Leningrad Kirov Plant and Institute "Transmash", created on the basis of the T-80BV. Due to the financial difficulties of the late 1980s and early 1990s, only a single prototype tank was established in the autumn of 1990. In 1991 he started conducting tests with test firing, during which it was revealed a significant advantage of 152-mm cannon compared to the main tank gun caliber 125 mm 2A46. This was especially true in the larger half-shot pulse at about equal pullback tools that allow without significant improvements to install a gun at the tanks T-80BV, significantly increasing their firepower.

    However, in the 1990s, due to underfunding of the armed forces "Object 292" had not passed all the tests. In the future, gun caliber 152 mm LP-83 was used in the "Object 477", "Hammer" and its counterpart, the 152-mm gun 2A83, on the "Object 195", "Black Eagle".

    "Object 477" "The Hammer" because of the failure location of the ammunition is not received and was soon closed.

    "MSTA-C" to "Object 195", "Black Eagle" on the Ekaterinburg plant was founded №9 new 2A83 cannon caliber 152 mm, which is a modification of the gun 2A65 self-propelled artillery units (SAU). The first tests took place at the 2A83 cannon caterpillar platform B-4, which showed the same good results as PL-83. Blank range was 5100 m armor - 1024 mm homogeneous steel, which exceeded the indicators of 2A46. However, in 2010, working on the "Object 195", "Black Eagle" was stopped in favor of a new universal armored bay "Armata".

    Comparison guns 125 mm and 152 mm

    At the moment, the tanks T-14, "Armata" have an upgraded 125-mm gun 2A82-1M developed №9 plant in Yekaterinburg.

    The performance characteristics of 125-mm guns 2A82-1M:

    gun type - smoothbore barrel with chrome plated;
    Weight - 2700 kg;
    Barrel length - 7000 mm;
    Starting projectile flight speed - 2050 m / s;
    Effective range shot:
    - Projectiles - 4700 m;
    - Managed a missile (URS) 3UBK21 "Sprinter" - 8000 m;
    - Anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) "Reflex-M" - 5500 m;
    Rate - 10-12 rounds per minute;
    Muzzle energy shot - 15-24 MJ;
    Penetration:
    - Armor-piercing discarding sabot projectile (BPS) - 850-1000 mm;
    - Anti-tank - 950 mm;
    Resource gun barrel - 800-900 shots;
    Ammunition - 45 shells;
    Automatic loader - 32 projectile.

    As seen gun 2A83, modernized weapon ACS "MSTA-S" 2A65, the development of the Ekaterinburg plant number 9 as a 152-mm gun for the T-14.

    The performance characteristics of 152-mm 2A83 cannon:

    gun type - smoothbore barrel with chrome plated;
    Weight - 5000 kg;
    Barrel length - 7200 mm;
    Starting projectile flight speed - 1980 m / s;
    Effective range shot:
    - Projectiles - 5100 m;
    - URS "Krasnopol" 2K25 - of 20 000 m;
    - URS "Krasnopol" ZOF38 - of 12 000 m;
    Rate - 10-15 rounds per minute;
    Muzzle energy shot - 20-25 MJ;
    Penetration:
    - BPS - 1024 mm;
    - ATGM - 1200-1400 m;
    Resource gun barrel - 280 shots;
    Ammunition - 40 shells;
    Automatic loader - 24 projectile.

    As can be seen from the characteristics of guns, compared with a gun 2A83 cannon 2A82-1M has considerable superiority in almost all respects. It distinguishes it as the possibility of firing ammunition up to 1 meter, such as the "Krasnopol" - before they were used in ACS 'MSTA-C. "

    But this tool has a number of critical deficiencies, the main of which is its high "parasitic mass" gun: even with the use of composite materials 2A83 weight is almost twice the weight 2A82-1M. From this arises the second negative - a significant reduction in the tank ammunition. A third drawback of this tool should be considered more than three times smaller share of the gun barrel.

    What is the competition

    The main competitors of domestic 2A83 cannon is a German 130-mm gun Rheinmetall L55. and 140-mm American gun XM291.

    German gun L55. 130 mm gauge is based on a 120-mm precursor. While its exact characteristics are unknown, in addition to that instrument has a barrel length of 51 gauge (6630 mm), will have 50% more power as compared with 120mm version, and gun with the weight of 3000 kg. For the firing of 130-mm guns planned to use two types of unitary perspective shells - this armor-piercing projectiles (APFSDS) with an elongated tungsten core, partly combustible sleeve with gunpowder charge of a new type; and a multi-purpose high-explosive projectile with programmable air-undermining, developed on the basis of DM11 projectile. Mass production is scheduled to deploy weapons in 2025.

    American XM291 gun caliber 140 mm is the result of work on the project ATAC (Advanced Tank Cannon - «Future-tank gun"). According to the developers, this tool has twice the capacity than the similar 120-mm gun M-256 mounted on tanks M1A2 «Abrams." The gun has a removable barrel, breech design allows you to replace the 140 mm bore 120 mm, thus allowing the use of a new type of ammunition, as well as the old. The gun has automatic loader, the trials showed a weapon rate similar rate of 2A83 - 12 rounds per minute. Ammunition was 22 shots caliber 140 mm or 32-33 mm caliber projectile 120. The main drawback of this tool is very large recoil energy.

    Gun in development since 1985 and has not yet passed the test, to this day she is on the stage of the experimental sample.

    Prospects for the introduction and use cases 2A83 cannon on a tank T-14

    You can quite confidently say that the version of the T-14 with a 152-mm gun will be created. Another military acceptance procedure began in February 2016 the T-14, including a version with a 152 mm gun. Specialists of "Rosatom" are already working on the creation of super-explosive piercing projectiles caliber 152 mm depleted uranium.

    The problem of small amounts of ammunition in 152-mm version of a tank can be solved by placing additional shells in zabashennoy niche.

    Since the T-14 has its own radar station (RLS), in the 152-mm version of the tank is provided the use of controlled type "Krasnopol" shells. In this scenario, the T-14 already looks more like ACS than the tank, so it is possible that the 152-mm version of the T-14 in the documentation will have the abbreviation "Combat Machine Gun" (BAM).

    From the above it can be concluded that the main instrument for the T-14 will be a 125-mm gun 2A82-1M. With gun caliber 152 mm 2A83 limited series tanks will be released - to perform more specific tasks as part of Panzer Group. The script use 152-mm guided missiles available in the destruction of enemy fortifications, the application of high-precision strikes on armor or air defense of the enemy at a distance of 20 km or more (the shell "Krasnopol" 2K25 lets you do this). Therefore, the T-14 with a 152-mm gun is not the main version of the tank to the "Armata" platform and will serve as a highly specialized machine fire support.

    Very interesting. I think the 152mm tank will come and fast. My doubt is if it will be named also under T-14 name, or will be called T-17 or T-18. A delay in the procurement of the T-14 benefits to the 152mm variant over the 125mm variant.

    The data about ranges are demolishing. There is a need of improvement of the ranges for the 125mm with some kind of rocket assisted projectile, because the caliber will remain useful many years even in a case of no production for the T-14 125mm.

    Wow... you might actually think there is a hint of respect... like Russia actually knows what they are doing...

    What a difference a change of president makes to attitudes in the west... next they will be saying that Russia is not the real enemy and that cooperation might be the best way forward...

    I still don't trust them.

    Some news about the BMP-T Terminator 3, developed on the Armata platform with an interesting 57-2 configuration.

    Russia seems to go to 57mm weapons on BMP-T because they have more power to break some point, and can be combined with other weapons like anti tank missiles, and high rate of fire weapons of smaller caliber (likely of 12.7mm like in the T-14). According to the news the 57mm weapon would have also some anti-air capability (basically vs helicopters and drones), that is very important because it allows the vehicle to work also outside of the range of the portable/man-portable weapons of the adversary.

    Russian T-14 Armata Main Battle Tank continues field trials

    The field trials of Russia’s most advanced Armata tank are proceeding on schedule and without complications, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told TASS on Thursday.

    (Source: internet)

    "They are proceeding according to plan," he said in reply to a question about how operational tests were going on. "Various technologies are being tested and the issue of automatizing all of the tank’s systems is being considered," Rogozin said. The board of Russia’s military and industrial commission will soon hear a report by Uralvagonzavod newly-appointed CEO Alexander Potapov on the pace of these works, the vice-premier said. "We do not expect any complications with this machine," Rogozin said.

    The volume of T-14 Armata tank purchases for the Russian Armed Forces will be specified by September, the vice-premier said. "The purchase parameters will be formalized under a new state armament program," Rogozin said. "In September, it [the state armament program] will be reported in quite an assembled form to the Russian president, including the specified purchase volume for this tank." The new draft state armament program is expected to be submitted to the Defense Ministry and the board of the military and industrial commission in early May, the vice-premier said.

    The T-14 Armata was unveiled for the first time to the public during the military parade in Moscow for the Victory Day, May 9, 2015. During the victory day parade 2015, Russia has unveiled the new Armata and the main armament consists only of a new 125mm gun with no additional weapons on the side of the turret. Second armament of the T-14 Armata includes one remote weapon station mounted on the top rear of the turret armed with one 7.62mm mm machine gun.

    The new unmanned remote turret of T-14 Armata would be equipped with new generation of 125mm 2A82-1M smoothbore gun with an automatic loader and 32 rounds ready to use. The main gun can also fire new laser-guided missile with a range from 7 to 12 km. The T-14 Armata carries a total of 45 rounds. According to some Russian sources, the T-14 Armata could be armed in the future with a new 152mm cannon. The first deliveries of the tank to the Russian Armed Forces was scheduled for 2015.

    I am assuming the 10km one is missiles and the 3km one is either Sabot or just the killzone.

    Great photo. Certainly a larger target than the T-72.
