Peŕrier wrote:Point of fact, I would advocate even a larger class, frigate's size, supplemented by a mid size (13.000 to 16.000 full load displacement) support vessel (support meaning both fuel, stores and maintenance support).

As a general configuration, the ability to embark two Ka-29's size helicopter plus two S-100's size UAV, two RIBs, a 100 mm gun, two Pantsir and one or two RBU-6000s and light torpedo's launch tubes.

Main tasks would be sea lanes control and security, peace time escort (think of the so called Tartus Express) and close range ASW escort of logistic ships in war times.

Displacement 3.000+ tons, integrated diesel-electric propulsion, hull lines aimed to sea keeping capabilities AND silent low speed cruise, ability to run on electric only propulsion for effective ASW's chase, sensor's suite able to integrate with higher echelon's vessels and to receive tactical pictures from them, that's it.

You're actually right to me but there is one more factor: time.  RN doesn't need them now. There are more pressing needs.  Once fleet starts growing, expand its operations then why not. As turning 22160 into kind of light corvette it would be fine to me but this topis was discussed @nusea earlier on Smile

    Yes its clearly the 76mm.
I believe press etc have quoted details of offered Export variants in the absence of Official details from the Govt/Military.

The patrol ship "Nikolay Sipyagin" was laid down

January 13, 2018 in Zelenodolsk at the JSC Zelenodolsky Plant named after A.M. Gorky "(the enterprise belongs to the group of companies of JSC" Holding Company "Ak Bars"), a solemn ceremony of laying the sixth patrol ship of project 22160 for the Russian Navy, named "Nikolai Sipyagin" (serial number 166) was held. Project 22160 was developed by JSC Northern Design Bureau (St. Petersburg). The ship was named in honor of the Soviet gunner's commander of the 4th division of the patrol boats guarding the water area of the Novorossiysk naval base of the Black Sea Fleet, captain 3rd rank Nikolai Ivanovich Sipyagin (1911-1943), who died on December 1, 1943 during the Kerch landing operation and posthumously awarded title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

They have to take the mast off to get under bridges during the trip downriver, seems Military Acceptance did a bunch of filming during that.

From watching that documentary it looks like that ship is almost complete. All that is left is some internal furnishing and reinstalling radars.

They said that it isn't even going to shipyards in Crimea, it is being sent directly to Novorossiysk.

What is the status and prospects of the program for the construction of patrol ships of project 22160, what is the reason for the slowdown in the pace of their construction and will the sixth building be laid?

Construction of patrol ships of project 22160 began in 2014. The state contract for the delivery of the head patrol ship was signed on April 11, 2014. The laying of the main patrol ship Project 22160 (factory No. 161) Vasily Bykov was held on February 26, 2014 October 9, 2014. The state contract for the supply of five patrol ships was signed.

Project 22160 ships are designed to protect territorial waters, patrol the economic zone in open and closed seas, suppress smuggling and pirating activities, search for and assist victims in marine accidents, environmental monitoring of the environment, protect ships and ships at sea, as well as military - Sea bases and water areas with the purpose of warning of the attack of various enemy forces and assets in wartime.

According to the data of JSC Northern PKB, the ships of project 22160, with a displacement of about 1300 tons, provide a long-term presence in the far sea zone (autonomy is 60 days). The ships have high speed characteristics (maximum speed - up to 30 knots), they are designed taking into account the provision of comfortable conditions for the crew (up to 80 people). To increase the search potential and conduct search and rescue operations on ships, the basing of a 12-ton helicopter is provided. In addition, the ships are equipped with radio-technical and hydro-acoustic weapons, as well as radio-electronic countermeasures. The main power plant of the ships is a CODAG type unit with a total power of up to 25,000 kW.

The ships of this project are built strictly in the terms established by state contracts. Will there be new orders for the ships of project 22160, depends on the leadership of the Navy and the Ministry of Defense of Russia. If there will be a decision to increase the number of orders for the construction of patrol ships, we will build.

The sixth ship will be laid in 2018.

    Part 2 video

There are some pretty interesting surprises from these vids:
Separate boat launch area below the multi-role area, I'd have expected the boat to be an option for the multi-role area.
Uses the new armored special forces boat. Actually makes sense since these ships are supposed to do anti-pirate duty so there's a pretty high chance of getting shot at when going to inspect a suspect boat.
Has a big gym including a basketball hoop.
Hangar was previously expected by pretty much every source to be a small semi-extendable hangar but actually appears to be full-size taking up a big chunk of the superstructure interior.

Some nice footage in towing tank also.
Personally found footage of the canal locks in action very interesting

Getting a lot of publicity, even a really complementary article in the Warzone, this is the start

Russia is constructing half a dozen Project 22160 patrol boats that leverage an innovative and compact design that provides a lot of capability and potentially a huge amount of combat punch in a relatively small seaframe. The concept is innovative enough that it should be studied by western navies as a source of inspiration for their own future multi-role combat vessels.

Displacing just 1,300 tons, and at 308 feet long, these vessels sport stealthy features and have a range of 6,000 miles. They can stay at sea for 60 days while housing a crew complement of approximately 80 people. They aren't slowpokes either and can hit speeds of up to 30 knots.

The class was designed with a slew of missions in mind, including everything from anti-piracy to counter-terrorism, and even strike and special operations support. But above all else they are sea control vessels capable of blue water operations just as much as brown water operations.

JSC Zelenodolsky Plant named after A.M. Gorky also signed on October 9, 2014 a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense for the construction of five serial patrol ships of Project 22160 with factory numbers 162, 163, 164, 165 and 166, which are currently planted at Zelenodolsk Plant and are all in various stages of construction. These are the patrol ships "Dmitry Rogachev" (factory number 162, laid July 25, 2014), "Paul Derzhavin" (plant number 163, laid February 18, 2016), "Sergei Kotov" (plant number 164, laid May 8, 2016) , "Victor the Great" (factory number 165, laid down on November 25, 2016) and "Nikolai Sipyagin" (plant number 166, laid January 13, 2018).
At the same time, the construction of the ships "Pavel Derzhavin" and "Sergei Kotov" is carried out on the slipway at the Zaliv plant in Kerch. The contractual date for delivery of ships with factory numbers 162, 163 and 164 - 2018, with factory numbers 165 and 166 - 2019. All six ships are intended for the Black Sea Fleet.
