July 20, after the submarine «Zaporozhye» Navy Armed Forces of Ukraine from the dock experts 13th dockyard Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol have begun work in preparation for loading it on batteries.

According to the commander of the submarine «Zaporozhye» Captain 1 rank Oleg Orlov, experts 13th dockyard ChB Russia promised to prepare the boat for loading of storage batteries by September of this year. If the plan is executed, then after loading the batteries, which can take about one and a half months, will begin test mooring.

In the dock repairs on submarines «Zaporozhye» have been working on replacing parts of the shell plating, repairs donno-outboard valves, torpedo tubes, screw-steering group, stern tube glands, nasal spire installation, cleaning and painting of the shell and the main ballast tanks.

In the afternoon of Saturday, July 18, with the help of tugboats «Mayak» and «Mechanic Repin» Sevastopol port submarine «Zaporozhye» was transferred from the floating dock and pier set for the 13th dockyard Black Sea Navy of Russia.

Outward Road operation was carried out under the supervision of the Chief of Marine Operations Center Navy Armed Forces of Ukraine captain 1 rank Denis Berezovsky. It also attended raid tug «Dubno» Center search and rescue operations of Naval Forces of Ukraine and the environmental safety of the operation provided neftemusorosborschik ICC-482 Fleet Support Navy Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As previously reported, to finish the repair of a submarine «Zaporozhye» requires 10 million hryvnia.

to modernize it , and deprive NATO of using it against us!

Ukraine's only sub to reenter service in spring

KIEV, November 2 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's only submarine will become operational again in the spring of 2011, after almost 10 years under repairs, Chief of Staff Rear Adm. Yuriy Ilyin said on Tuesday.

Sea trials will start in December and continue through May, he said.

Ukraine received the Zhaporozye submarine (launched in 1970) following the division of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.

It has been under repairs since 1991.

Ukrainian Submarine Sails for Sea Trials

KIEV, April 25 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine’s only submarine, the Zaporozhye, has left the port of Sevastopol on the Black Sea for sea trials for the first time after many years of repairs.

The Soviet-era Foxtrot class (Project 641) diesel-electric submarine stood grounded at a dock in Sevastopol for years without repair and became a symbol of the demise of Ukraine’s navy.

Russian engineers repaired and serviced the submarine and a crew of Ukrainian submariners was trained at Russian naval bases.

“The sea trials of the Zaporozhye submarine is an important event for the Ukrainian navy,” Defense Minister Dmytro Salamatin said. “Successful sea trials will ensure the revival of Ukraine’s submarine fleet.”

The trials, scheduled until April 27, will test the submarine’s power plant and other key equipment while sailing on surface.

Though the submarine was built 40 years ago, the vessel has been upgraded with new equipment and will certainly raise the combat capability of the Ukrainian navy.

Submarines of this type are most efficient in the Black Sea as they feature low radar and noise signatures.

Russia, Bulgaria, and Romania also have one submarine each in the Black Sea.

Foxtrot was an excellent sub for its time, but then so was the Mig-21 an excellent fighter for its time.

In both cases the time has passed... if it is all you have then a upgrade makes sense, but it is not something to crow about.
