On July 8, 2019, the United States Department of Defense Defense Cooperation Agency (DSCA) sent to the US Congress notice of a possible forthcoming sale to Taiwan through intergovernmental military sales of Foreign Military Sales (FMS) of 108 main M1A2T Abrams tanks, as well as 250 portable FIM-92F Stinger Block I anti-aircraft guided missiles. Sale authorized by the US Department of State. The official recipient of the specified weapons and equipment in the notifications is the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington, which serves as the official representative of the Republic of China in the United States.

Military speaking not that much. Stingers are useless against what china will use to attack Taiwan i.e ballistic and cruise missile. Abrams will be destroyed by bombers from high altitude while the f-16 will be taken out by the ballistic missiles barrage the first day.

If taiwan invested in its own hardware it would at least stimulate their economy.

In the middle of a trade dispute between China and the US, sending weapons to Taiwan is more sending a message... a message that Obama didn't want to send when he was in office...
