The Russian Navy's Northern Fleet is carrying out flight tests and warfare trials of its modified Kamov Ka-27M anti-submarine helicopter from large destroyers, the fleet's spokesman, Captain Vadim Serga, said on Monday.
"The modernized Ka-27M (NATO codename Helix) is completing deck landings on a ship as well as trials of its main systems," he said.
The Ka-27M has already undertaken deck landing trials on a stationary destroyer at a berth on the Kola Peninsula, he added.
The latest sea trials will involve tests of the Ka-27M's new avionics systems in search of submarines, and trials of its radar against submarine, surface and air targets.
"The new machine has not only had modern avionics systems installed, but also updated special missions systems," he said. In addition, it has a new radar giving 360 degree coverage and a greater search radius and simultaneous tracking of dozens of targets.
"The modernized Ka-27M has also had its service life extended by another 10 to 15 years," Serga added.
The Ka-27 entered service with the Soviet Navy in 1982 in an anti-submarine role. Variants include the downgraded Ka-28 export model, the Ka-29 transport helicopter and Ka-31 airborne early warning system.
It is fitted with a dipping sonar system as well as sonobuoys, and can be armed with depth charges and torpedos.

Ka-27M has passed the first round of tests

SAINT-PETERSBURG, July 6. The first stage of state joint flight tests of the modernized Ka-27M equipped with on-board radar with an active phased array antenna FH-A, a development of "Fazotron-NIIR" has been completed.


"Installing the helicopter radar with an active phased array is the basis of the modernization of the helicopter," - told "Interfax" a source in the military-industrial complex. He said that the radar FH-A is part of the command and tactical radar system (RKTS).

RKTS FH-A provides control of the territory in a circular field of view, or in a given sector, searching and detection of surface, air and ground targets, moving target, detecting and mapping the coastline of the land surface with high resolution, discrete escort coordinate ground and sea targets with preservation survey area; detection and coordinate hazardous meteorological formations; correction navigation devices.

"This system will bring together many other systems on board the helicopter: acoustic, magnetometric systems, and signals intelligence, including radar. In this case, all the information from other systems is displayed on the LED instrumentation, "- said the source.

Radar FH-A is located under the fuselage of the helicopter Ka-27M. It provides an overview of the circular surface and airspace.

In the near future, following the first stage of state joint tests (ICG) Ka-27M will be issued a preliminary conclusion of the customer - Russian Navy aviation. Complete the state joint tests of the Ka-27M is scheduled for the end of the year, continuous upgrading of front Ka-27 will begin in 2014 in the framework of the state defense order.

Actually the radar sample (or mockup) has be shown in past exhibtions if I am not wrong.
They(Take-off) do mention the radar on Ka-52K could be AESA, which I think the possibility will be 1%.
Russians don't even make AESA for Vityaz, how can they invent some AESA for Ka-52K? Needless to say Ka-27M...(both of them are far far less important and much lower budget than Vityaz project)

They(Take-off) do mention the radar on Ka-52K could be AESA, which I think the possibility will be 1%.

The Kumertau Aircraft Production Enterprise (KumAPP) has handed over the first modernised Ka-72M anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter to the Russian Navy, Russian Helicopters announced on 19 December.

A first batch of eight Ka-27Ms is set to be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defence by the end of the year, Vladislav Savelyev, deputy chief executive officer for sales of Russian Helicopters, stated.

The helicopters will be deployed to air bases attached to Russia's Black Sea and Northern Fleets, and also to the Yeysk naval aviation training centre.

The Kumertau factory began repairs (in order to extend service life) and upgrades of these eight helicopters to Ka-27M standard at the beginning of 2015. Russia's National Armament Programme provides for the upgrade of 46 helicopters to Ka-27M standard by 2018, the number planned to be kept after 2020. However, only two upgrade contracts have been signed as of yet, for a total of 22 helicopters (eight plus 14).

The Ka-27M (also designated izdeliye 27D2) upgrade programme was launched in the early 2000s. The helicopter's rotor system, powerplant, and airframe are unchanged while the mission system is completely new. The Ka-27M's mission system includes the Phazotron-NIIR Bumerang (Boomerang) radar command-tactical system, integrated around the helicopter's FHA radar; the new Kema radio sonobuoy system with RGB-16MK buoys; upgraded Ros'-VM dipping sonar; new MMS-27 fixed magnetic anomaly detector; electronic support measures suite; data link; a navigator's tactical display; and a SSP-V-27M satellite system for deck landings.

The Ka-27M can be armed with all available Russian weapons in the appropriate class, including APR-3 anti-submarine rocket torpedoes.

The FHA radar alone, without the other elements of the mission system, has been proposed as an upgrade for Russia's Ka-27PS search and rescue helicopters.
