    I am impressed with the Israeli development. Anyone that can something similar from different countries...

    Israel’s thermal stealth innovator Eltics unveiled today a short video depicting the results of recent tests where large thermal panels installed on a Land Rover Defender vehicle managed to eliminate the vehicle’s signature, totally masking the vehicle from the thermal sight’s display.

    Following a recent investment refuelling the start-up company, Eltics embarked on the development and testing of a full scale prototype of the Black-Fox active – adaptive – multi-spectral stealth system, to be able to mask a complete vehicle (both sides, front and rear). The system employs a thermal camera that samples the background view and a system processor and controller that recreates the necessary effects on the panels, blending the protected object into the background.

    The company already raised 2.5 million in funding and plans to attract additional 5 million in the near future, enabling it to pursue the next stage – building and testing a full scale thermal suite in an operational test of the stealth technology. The compamy has embarked on a cooperative development with IMI, with the two companies joining forces in offering thermal adaptive signature management technology with IMI’s hybrid-reactive armor modules. The new combined module designated ‘Invisible Reactive Armor Protection’ (IRAP) will be designed to match a wide range of armored fighting vehicles.

    Eltics has modified a Land Rover Defender vehicle installing multiple Black Fox panels and the signature management system (modules are shown on the hood). The system can eliminate the entire vehicle from the view of thermal sensors, or be used to depict a fake image, 'converting' the tank to look like a Jeep, and vice versa. Photos: Noam Eshel, Defense Update

    By managing the heat distribution of the panels, the Black Fox system depicts a displayed across the panels, deceiving enemy sensors, therefore, making target identification, acquisition and tracking virtually impossible.
    According to Ronen Meir Eltics CEO, the current system is capable of supporting an area 80 square meters of panels. This area will be sufficient to cover a large vehicle, on all sides. This installation will also employ specially designed windows that also minimize noticeable changes in thermal emissions, caused by the cooler transparent areas. The current system covers the entire infrared range, addressing thermal sensors operating in the both 3-5 and 8-12 micron wavelengths.

    According to Meir, the company has also tested another function of the system – its ability to change pattern, depicting a different thermal silhouette. This function enables a ‘Black Fox’ equipped tank to ‘look like’ a truck, jeep or APC, or an air defense vehicle or missile launcher to look like an ordinary truck. These functions have significant implications in denying intelligence gathering by the enemy, by totally eliminating potential targets or misleading the enemy to regard such targets as ‘lower priority’ objects. In addition to denying enemy identification by thermal observation, Black Fox is also capable of deceiving or disrupting defending forces from being tracked or engaged by heat or Imaging Infra-red seekers.

    Asian air force orders Elta intelligence pods

    Elta Systems has been awarded a "large contract" to supply a tactical aircraft-carried imagery intelligence system to what it describes as a "prestigious customer" in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Under the deal, which has been placed via programme prime contractor Elbit Systems, the Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary will supply an undisclosed number of EL/M-2060P synthetic aperture radar/ground moving target indication (SAR/GMTI) payloads to the un-named buyer.

    The nation in question is understood to already be operating a version of Elbit's long-range oblique photography system, which provides high-resolution electro-optical and infrared imagery from stand-off range. By adding the SAR/GMTI payload, the customer will possess a multi-sensor, all-weather tactical intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capability.

    "The combination of sensors, including real-time analysis and exploitation ground stations, will give our customer a crucial intelligence edge," says Elta president Nissim Hadas.

    Looks like a horrible amount of money that makes it to expensive to actually field it. One pair and amount of sights is already expensive and expensive to replace or maintaine with spareparts, i don't think that will do better regardless of the quality at first use.

    Agreed, but when you look at it, certain helicopters are already so expencive that adding this wont even be that much. And this could prove as very useful, especially on SAR aircrafts.

    Actually it does make it a concern. How many countries can have more than 40 helicopters of modern calibre in their military with a full logistical chain behind them? 3 or 5 countries. How many of the rest of those countries would even consider lowering the batch of helicopters in favor for installing such FLIR's on them?

    I mean if a country like France is going to buy 40 helicopters which already has quite a big budget compared with lot of other countries, how many helicopters they could buy from the former 40 they need if they install on every single helicopter such a FLIR? Certainly not the number 40. Of course i do not know how much this FLIR costs but looking at Elbit products they overprize them quite a bit aswell the technology itself is not cheap either nor will the Israelis sell something without overprizing it to compensate for the low numbers they usually sell with their limited global market in MIC.

    Well some smaller countries truly prefer to spend more per system so they can operate smaller fleet with ultimate goal to perform better than fleets with higher numbers, doesnt always pay off tho.

    In my mind this thing would be great of Search and Rescue helicopters and Combat Search and Rescue, maybe on some command post helicopters, or special purpose helicopters like lets say MH-60M which do not exist in significant numbers. I dont think equiping every helicopter with this would be required. I dont know about the price either but i can guess not less than 500.000 USD.

    Sure, Israelis are expencive, but they truly had some exceptional designs last 35 years.

    A new version of the Israeli ATGM Spike-LR

    The original taken from a colleague oleggranovsky in "Raphael" presents a new version of the ATGM Spike

    According to Janes on 30.05.17, on the eve of the aerospace show in Le Bourget (France) yesterday (29.05.17), the company "Rafael" declassified the development of a new version of the anti-aircraft missile system Spike-LR, called " Spike LR II.

    Spike family is very popular, at the end of 2016 for export to more than 26 countries around 27,000 missiles were delivered. Two of Spike's variants are Spike-MR (Medium Range, "Gil") with a range of up to 2,500 m and Spike-LR (Long Range, "Gomed") with a range of up to 4,000 m. However, in the IDF, where these The missiles are armed with a battalion unit (anti-tank platoon of the company of the infantry battalion's fire support), both versions are called "Gil", the more they are launched from the same PU, the missiles have the same dimensions and appearance.

    Accordingly, for Spike LR II, the name "Gil-2" is already indicated (and for the original Spike LR, the designation Spike LR I will be used). The new missile can be used from the same PU (terrestrial, air, sea) as the old Spike-MR / LR.

    Successful tests of the Israeli ballistic missile IAI LORA

    On today's (20.06.17) website of the Israeli Aviation Industry (IAI), some time ago IAI successfully completed the test of the LORA (LOng Range Artillery) missile, as the final stage of a series of deals related to this missile.

    As part of the LORA tests, a system trailer (made in the form of a trailer) and a 2-rocket launcher based on a truck was installed on the deck of a merchant ship. The launch was carried out at sea for a sea target. Tests of all the elements of the system were successful. Such a test method is connected with security problems - Israel is too small for the land trials of such a system, although it is not clear why the launch from the shore could not be carried out for the sea target.

    The IAI also listed the following TTX missiles: a mass of about 1,600 kg, a range of up to 600 km, an accuracy of up to 10 m. Data on mass and accuracy were published earlier, but the range of 400 km as far as I can remember is indicated for the first time: That the missile can carry warheads of mass 600, 500 and 400 kg, range 180, 230 and 280 km respectively. Or the distance was indicated as "from 90 to 300 km".

    LORA was developed by the Malam plant ("Maarahot Lehima Meshulavot", ie "Integrated combat systems") IAI. At the same plant, they produce missiles of the PRO HETS and rocket carriers Shavit. These days LORA is demonstrated in the Israeli exposition at the air show in Le Bourget in Paris.

    The tests of the Israeli wheeled armored personnel carrier Eitan

    On 15-17.05.18 the conference "Fire, maneuver and reconnaissance 2018" ("Kenes Ash, Timrun ve-Modiin"), an annual event held by Israeldefense in cooperation with ("Amutat Yad ha-Tothanim") and the Center for the History of Intelligence in Israel (Malam, "h-Merkaz le-Moreshet ha-Modiin be-Israel").

    Defense industry of Israel 5554380_original

    Among others, Brigadier-General Gai Feiglin, head of the Directorate of the BTT in the Ministry of Defense (Minhyelet REMEM) spoke at the conference. Previously, this directorate was called the "directorate of the Merkava tank," the name change is due to the fact that in addition to the tank, he is engaged in the BTR "Namer" and "Eitan".

    According to Feiglin, "Eitan" has passed more than 2 years of testing on various types of terrain (open, mountain, buildings), before the start of mass production there are less than 2 years. The APC will receive a tower and various technologies used in the Merkava-4 and heavy APC Namer.

    For the time being, the prototype of an APC is continuing to run on the teachings of the NAHAL brigade. Yesterday, on 04.06.18, the IDF website published photo and video of one of the mouths of the 50th battalion "Basellet" brigade in the Jordan Valley. The company is equipped with APC M113 and one Eitan B/N 741999, known for all other demonstrations. The battalion is very satisfied with the new APC and is looking forward to the beginning of its mass production. Gradually, "Eitan" should replace all other APC brigades.

    All the rest, said in articles and video, is known from previous publications:

    - 8x8 APC, weight about 30 tons, it is stated that "the most protected wheeled BTR in the world"; It is able to continue to move with the loss of several wheels;
    - is capable of carrying 12 fighters (including the driver and commander), compared to 10 on M113; while fighters can take much more weapons and equipment;
    - the driver and the commander have an excellent 360 degree view, incl. and due to the system of video cameras, without the need to protrude into open hatches;
    - loading and dismounting of soldiers is very convenient;
    - The APC will receive a water supply system that facilitates the soldiers long stay inside the APC;
    - The APC will receive powerful weapons;

    The second prototype of the Israeli wheeled armored personnel carrier Eitan

    BTR "Eitan" has been under testing for more than 2 years. As far as it was known, the APC existed in a single prototype. Although officially it was not said, but all the photos and videos had the same APC, B/N 741999. And now 17.06.18 the Directorate of the BTT in MO (Mantak) published that the construction of the second prototype was completed.

    Defense industry of Israel CLOxizsLvcS25YCY5kGkOY31__IZFF1rij-2tgAT6MGH5vbAlPbsKsuHP5XAxfX_WRRRcoDExjBbkgaZCNPp6QKUS438KnG8-BL0iYg6gWDjTBSss_lpaxDm8X5fAzjwq708vZexvlXnyX1LUorHOSY_T4hJgJL_dZrkzQopDuo

      The second prototype has many differences from the first, the changes are made according to the test results. The design of this machine is called serial (Tetsura Sedratit), i.e. serial production of "Eitan" after its organization will go exactly according to this configuration. On the second prototype another engine is installed, as checking alternatives from both operational and technical points of view. From here it can be concluded that finally the type of engine for the production machine has not yet been selected.

    In addition, the differences of the 2nd prototype from the 1st:
    •  changed the shape of the hull for better protection of the crew and systems;

    •  the suspension is improved, its service life is extended;

    •  improved steering system;

    •  improved electrical system, control and monitoring system, a number of other systems.

       The design was carried out by the engineers of Mantak, the construction of the prototype - by the Merkava plants and the machines in the repair and recovery center of the IDF (MASHA-7000). The assembly lasted 30 days and completely passed in MASHA. On the links below, a video is shown, at which the entire assembly process is captured with frames and the internal construction of the BTR is clearly visible. The articles contain the TTX BTR, but nothing new compared to the published one and a half years ago there.

       The Israel defense website raises the question of which weapons and KAZ system will be installed on the serial Eitan. The new photo shows the Samson Mini turret of the company Rafael, the BTR has already passed the integration and testing with this turret and KAZ "Meil Ruach" (Trophy). However, as long as there is no obligation for MO to buy these systems. Elbit Maarahot offers its turret for Eitan, and TAI Maarahot (IMI Systems) - its own turret and KAZ "Iron Fist". The choice has not been made yet.

    Israel Laser Weapon Programs

    Defense industry of Israel 6237537_original

    The first attempt to create a combat laser in Israel took place in 1972-1983. Dr. Zeev Bonen (1926-2010), who worked at Raphael in 1952-1987, including Twice (1970-1978 and 1982-1987), the former CEO, described it in his memoirs.

    The topic of lasers received the blessing of Professor David Bergman, the “father” of Israeli military research and development. At the beginning of 1972, a meeting was held in the office of the assistant (essentially deputy) Defense Minister Zvi Tsur (Chera, 1923-2004) with the participation of Major-General (Res.) Amos Horev, Chief Scientist of the Defense Ministry, Brigadier General Yitzhak Yaakov ), the head of the AOI weapons department and Bonen himself. All three (Khorev, Yaakov, Bonen) recommended starting the project of creating a laser weapon. Tzur made recommendations and in 1974 research began.

    The work went in different directions, not only at Raphael, but also in other organizations, each working on a different type of laser. Only on the "Raphael" in 1974-1976. 80 person-years were spent on the topic, and in 1977-1980. - 111 person-years. From start to finish, the Rafael project was led by Dr. Oded Amichai. The given data (80 and 111) may seem small, they mean that 26-27 people worked full-time on the project, however leading experts of Raphael were involved in a number of areas, respectively, they were cut off from other projects.

    In June 1976, the first successful laboratory tests of a gas-dynamic laser with a power of 10 kW were held at Raphael, and another important laser tests of the same type took place in August 1979. However, since the spring of 1977, Raphael has devoted most of its efforts to chemical lasers. In the same years, the Israeli Aviation Industry (IAI) was actively engaged in the issue of stabilizing and pointing a laser beam at a target.

    By 1977 it became clear that the project would require billions of dollars in investment and many years of work. There will be no combat-ready systems until the 90s, and this was not guaranteed. Already in 1977, the Israeli Air Force stopped supporting the project. He also lost support in the R & D system of the Ministry of Defense (MAFAT). The project's budget was reduced, and in 1983, Raphael ceased work on the combat laser.

    The second major project involving lasers is the development of the Nautilus short-range missile defense system (THEL, Tactical High Energy Laser) for intercepting missiles, mortar shells and artillery shells. For this project there are detailed articles on the Internet, incl. on Wikipedia, I only note that it was a 2 MW chemical laser that was created jointly with the United States in 1996-2005. (Israel’s participation was primarily IAI, in particular, the ELTA radar was used), after an investment of 200-300 million dollars (including 50 million Israeli), the project was terminated. Later, the United States (Northrop Grumman) independently worked on MTHEL (Mobile THEL) and SkyGuard, Israel studied the purchase of this system several times, but preferred an anti-missile defense system based on interceptor missiles, the Iron Dome.

    As for Raphael, there is no exact data when the company returned to the topic of lasers. However, in 2006 at the AUSA Winter Symposium and Exhibition (15-17.02.06) in Florida, the THOR system was presented (in the AOI “Ash Kara” - “Cold Fire”). Here a 2 kW laser (according to other data from 70 to 700 W) was used to destroy roadside bombs. The system could be mounted on an armored personnel carrier separately or as part of the Mini Samson machine gun turret, in the latter case the system weight was 1,100 kg (including 250 kg — the turret weight; according to other sources, the system weight is 600 kg). The system was tested on the M113 (separately) and on the heavy Puma armored personnel carrier (on the turrets), there is no data on whether it was purchased commercially (apparently at least several copies were received by the AOI). Photos of THOR can be viewed on the LJ "The Cave of the Evil Bookvoed."

    The “Iron Dome” missile defense system has a dead zone - about 4 km from the launch site. To overlap, Raphael began the development of a Keren Barzel laser defense system (Iron Beam HELWS, High-Energy Laser Weapon System). The system was first presented at the Singapore Air Show on February 11, 2014. It is reported that it is able to fight missiles, mortar mines and various aircraft at a range of up to 7 km. Can be used against ground targets.

    According to Rafael representatives, by 2014, 15 engineers worked on the system for 6 years. As of April 2014, the system showed performance (Proof Of Concept), more than 100 tests were conducted, on which the system hit 90% of targets (mines, shells, UAVs). Further the stage of full-scale development began. In August 2014, Raphael estimated that the system would become operational in two years. However, in 2015 it was published that it would take at least 5 years.

    The system uses a solid-state laser with a power of tens of kilowatts (hereinafter hundreds of kilowatts). The complex includes radar, gearbox and two laser-based laser systems. When shooting, it is possible to concentrate two laser beams on one target. To destroy a target, it needs laser irradiation for 4-5 seconds.

    Mention of another system appeared in August of this year. It is called “Magen Gideon” (“Gideon Shield”) - a certain short-range air defense system and a missile defense system, the mobile analogue of the “Iron Dome”, advancing with the troops deep into enemy territory. Uses missiles, laser and electronic warfare to protect troops from rocket and mortar shelling, as well as from air attack weapons, apparently multikopter and light UAVs. Still in development, photos not published. What kind of laser power is used in the system is also not reported. Perhaps relatively low-power to protect against UAVs and multikopter, perhaps "Keren Barzel."

    And finally, on November 22, 188, the Kalkalist website published an interview with Boaz Levy, deputy general director of the IAI Missile and Space Division. In it, Levy reports that IAI is also working on a laser missile defense system. Development is at a "very advanced stage", successful tests have already been conducted. The system is developed by IAI on its own initiative and on its own funding. The laser control system seems to be reminiscent of Sky Capture (“Loked Shkhakim”), which I already wrote about.

    Read a report recently that Vietnam are not happy with their Spyder air defence missiles and are not buying more.

    I suspect it is because their IR sensors are not so useful in hotter climates...
