Russia to use SS-19 ICBMs as carriers for Avangard hypersonic glide vehicles — source

About 30 UR-100N UTTKh liquid-propellant missiles were delivered from Ukraine for the ‘gas debt, according to the source

MOSCOW, March 20. /TASS/. Soviet-made UR-100N UTTKh (NATO reporting name: SS-19 Stiletto) intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) will be the first carriers for hypersonic glide vehicles of Russia’s most advanced Avangard missile system, a source in the Russian defense industry told TASS on Tuesday.

"In the early 2000s, about 30 UR-100N UTTKh liquid-propellant missiles were delivered from Ukraine for the ‘gas debt.’ After the disintegration of the USSR, they were kept at warehouses in their unfueled condition, i.e. they were actually new and capable of going on combat duty to serve for several dozen years. A part of these missiles will become the carriers of the first series of hypersonic glide vehicles in the next few years," the source said.

"With the acceptance of heavy RS-28 Sarmat missiles for service, such vehicles will be mounted on them as well," the source added.

Speaking about the combat characteristics of the new hypersonic glide vehicle, the source noted that the yield of the nuclear warhead mounted on it - "over 2 megatonnes in TNT equivalent" - was quite enough to fully destroy "especially important targets."

Today the yield of the armament of strategic nuclear carriers in Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China and other countries normally does not exceed 1 megatonne. The world’s most powerful weapon was tested in the Soviet Union in 1961: the AN-602 thermonuclear air bomb had a yield of 58 megatonnes.

TASS has not yet received an official confirmation of the information provided by the source.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said earlier that the Defense Ministry had signed a contract on the production of the Avangard hypersonic strategic system. The new weapon was mentioned for the first time by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on March 1.

Russia’s Strategic Missile Force Commander Sergei Karakayev later specified that the trials of the Avangard hypersonic missile system had been successfully completed.

The Avangard is a strategic ICBM system carrying a hypersonic glide vehicle. According to open sources, the complex was developed by the Research and Production Association of Machine-Building (the town of Reutov, the Moscow Region) and was tested from 2004. The glide vehicle is capable of flying in the dense layers of the atmosphere at hypersonic speed, maneuvering along its flight path and by its altitude and breaching any anti-missile defense.

The new complex is expected to go on combat duty no later than 2019, after its test launch is conducted successfully, another source in the defense industry told TASS earlier. As the source also said, the number of missile divisions within Russia’s Strategic Missile Force will not increase: the most advanced systems will arrive for the existing missile formations.

The UR-100N UTTKh (SS-19 Stiletto) missile is a heavy upgrade of the UR-100 missile complex developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s by the Design Bureau-52 led by Vladimir Chelomei. It was accepted for service in 1980. Currently, Russia’s Strategic Missile Force operates 30 silo-based missiles of this type, according to open sources. The missile has a takeoff weight of about 100 tonnes and a throw weight of around 4.5 tonnes.

So they had 30 brand spanking new heavy ICBMs in storage they didn't know what to do with that will now both get used and will speed up Avangard's entry into service since they won't have to wait for Sarmats?

This is what I call efficiency. I bet everyone assumed those 30 Stilettos will be getting scraped and Ukraine thought that they screwed Russia over by offloading ICBMs as payment instead of cash. Nice move thumbsup

Question: they say that Avangard will be using 2 megaton warhead instead of usual 900 kiloton one. Which warhead model are we talking about here precisely?

Russia completes work on Avangard hypersonic missile system

Industrial enterprises have switched to its serial production, the Defense Ministry said

MOSCOW, July 19. /TASS/. Russia’s Strategic Missile Force is preparing a position area for accepting the Avangard hypersonic missile system for service as part of the efforts to strengthen the country’s military security, the Defense Ministry announced on Thursday.

"The Russian defense industry has completed developing the Avangard missile system with the principally new armament - the gliding cruise warhead. Industrial enterprises have switched to its serial production," the Defense Ministry said.

"A set of organizational and technical measures is underway in the position area of the Dombarovsky large unit of the Strategic Missile Force to accept the Avangard missile system for operation," it added.

The development of new strategic weapon systems "is aimed at increasing Russia’s defense capability and preventing any aggression against our country and its allies," the Defense Ministry stressed.

Russia in the coming months will put into service the Avangard complexes

In the coming months, the Russian army will receive the Avangard hypersonic complexes for service, said Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that in the issue of creating such weapons, domestic experts are far ahead of their competitors.

“We are absolutely perfect, this is an obvious fact, and our colleagues understand this, realize it, we have overtaken all our competitors in this field. No one has a high-precision hypersonic weapon. Some plan to test it in a year or two. And we are in service, ”Putin said during a speech at the annual meeting of the international Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi.

Russia’s Avangard hypersonic missile system to assume combat duty in 2019, says source

The missile systems will be put on combat duty in the Red Banner Missile Division in the Orenburg Region

MOSCOW, October 29. /TASS/. The first regiment armed with the Avangard system comprising an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and a hypersonic glide vehicle will assume combat duty until the end of 2019, a source in the domestic defense industry told TASS on Monday.

"The scheduled period for placing the lead regiment on combat duty is the end of 2019. Initially, the regiment will comprise at least two systems but eventually their number will rise to their organic quantity of six units," the source said.

As Russia’s Defense Ministry officially stated, the first Avangard hypersonic missile systems will be put on combat duty in the Red Banner Missile Division based in the Orenburg Region in the south Urals.

According to the source, the Avangard hypersonic system is expected to enter service in late 2018 - early 2019.

In compliance with the established procedure, a control launch of the glide vehicle’s carrier, the UR-100N UTTKh missile, is expected to be carried out before the hypersonic system is accepted for service. However, considering the successful previous launches of the glide vehicle itself and the existence of the reliable and already tested missile, possibly no such a launch will be conducted," the source said.

The Avangard is a strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle. According to open sources, the ‘breakthrough’ weapon was developed by the Research and Production Association of Machine-Building (the town of Reutov, the Moscow Region) and was tested from 2004. The glide vehicle is capable of flying at hypersonic speed in the dense layers of the atmosphere, maneuvering by its flight path and its altitude and breaching any anti-missile defense.

The new weapon was unveiled by Russian President Vladimir Putin in his State of the Nation address to the Federal Assembly on March 1. Later, the Russian leader said during his annual Q&A session on June 7 that "the Avangard system is already in the process of its manufacture and has entered its serial production and in 2019 we are planning to deliver it to the Armed Forces."

    impossible!

WASHINGTON — Russia is currently unable to find a source for the critical carbon fiber components needed to make one of its hypersonic weapons, despite President Vladimir Putin's claims that the device has already entered serial production, according to people with direct knowledge of a U.S. intelligence report.

What nonsense, U.S intelligence has no goddamn clue what the Hypersonic weapons are made of, if they did they would have made their own, Project Falcon failed, and they are struggling with X-51.

While Zircon, Khinzal and Avangard will be deployed by next year.

Perhaps Im wrong but didn't they say that Russia is not satisfied with current carbon fiber? (doesnt it mean: yet they used the best US made? )

Russia to set up 2 regiments armed with Avangard hypersonic missiles by 2027, says source

The decision on the number of the regiments is not final

MOSCOW, October 29. /TASS/. Russia’s state armament program stipulates deploying two regiments armed with Avangard hypersonic missile systems by 2027, a source in the domestic defense industry told TASS on Monday.

"The year 2027 is the term for deploying two regiments of six launchers each and putting them on combat duty. For the purpose of arming these regiments, the state armament program includes 12 UR-100N UTTKh missiles, each of which will be outfitted with a hypersonic glide vehicle," the source said.

As Russia’s Defense Ministry has stated officially, both regiments will make part of the Red Banner Missile Division based in the Orenburg Region in the south Urals.

According to the source, the decision on deploying only two regiments is not final. "Everything will depend on the [international] situation," the source said.

Russian Strategic Forces currently have ~30 UR-100N. Looks like all will be converted to Avangard carriers.
The question is what after UR will be retired? Only Sarnats or also Rubezh?

Yes. Maybe thats the reason that missiles have been removed from these 30x UR-100N 2 years now

True. But keeping old missiles alive is also not for free. Mind that UR-100N is on service since 1975. in 7 years you get half of century.

Borisov stated first unit should go into operation in 2019.  By 2027 they need both regiments fully equipped.

P.S. Russia has been using Carbon fiber and other materials for decades for their missiles. Actually, a ballistic missile in itself flies in hypersonic speeds. They been producing such with Iskander as of recent. So the article may be only half correct. Currently, Russia is seeking to strengthen their production of carbon fiber and other nano material. Reality is though, they can use their current manufacturing method regardless what article states.

These 30 UR-100N are pretty much brand new.

They were received from the Ukraine back in 90's or 00's as a debt payment and have been in storage ever since. They are being sent into service now. So that's at least several decades of good service to look forward to.

404 probably thought back then that they swindled Ruskies but it seems that patience is definitely a virtue... thumbsup

As for carbon fibers I would maybe buy the whole story if it broke BEFORE Russia successfully tested Avangard prototype and USA confirmed that they did so.

But for Russia to suddenly have issues with materials AFTER successful launch is just hogwash.

Avangard hypersonic boost-glide system deployment plans

Russian press quotes an industry source as saying that the Avangard boost-glide system (Project 4202) "will begin combat duty by the end of 2019." The first regiment will include two UR-100NUTTH/SS-19 missiles, each armed with a single boost-glide vehicle. The missiles will be deployed in silos of the Dombarovskiy missile division. Later the number of missiles in the regiment will be increased to six; a second regiment with six missiles is expected to be deployed by 2027. The source also said that it's possible that the deployment will begin without additional flight tests of the vehicle.

Just one note on the missile that will be used in the Avangard system. There have been speculations that it will be the new Sarmat, but apparently that's not the case - the boost-glide vehicle was associated with UR-100NUTTH/SS-19 from the very beginning of the program in the 1980s, it used the missile during the tests, and will stay with it until the end. Russia got about 30 "dry" UR-100NUTTH missiles that it received from Ukraine - since these missiles have never been fueled they have a few decades of combat service in them.

If that's correct and expert's estimation that for every avangard there is minimum 30 SM3 needed then we have over 2100 SM3 for UR-100 salvo only...

    1 UR-100 = 1 Avangard

    1 Sarmat = 3 Avangards

They are using UR-100 in order to get Avangard into service now so they don't have to wait until Sarmat development is complete

Also, they want to use those 30 UR-100 so they don't go to waste
