    Pyotr Veliky

The Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) is the current flagship of the Russian Northern Fleet. It is a Project 1144.2 Kirov class battle cruiser displacing 26,000 tonnes using nuclear propulsion. The vessel is regarded as the most powerful surface combatant ever set to sea and is the most updated ship in the class. It was launched in 1989 and completed sea trials in 1995. It has been the lead ship in numerous exercises in 2000 during the Kursk disaster, 2003, and 2004. On 17 February 2004, RIA Novosti reported that the ship had successfully repelled a ballistic missile attack. It was the first time missiles were shot at ballistic targets from aboard a Russian warship and the "event was a success" said Chief of Staff Anatoly Kvashnin.17 On 23 March 2004, a serious problem arose from the Chief of the Navy about the ship which was reported in Gazeta.ru. Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov was quoted as saying, "The ship is in such a condition that it may blow up any minute… In areas where admirals walk around it looks all right, but in places they do not visit, the situation is such that it may explode… I mean among other things maintaining the nuclear reactor." 18In 2003, the ship was declared the fleet’s model ship by top officials.19 Kuroyedov made his remarks after Kommersant published an article saying the reason for bringing the ship into dock was the result of a power struggle among top Russian admirals.20 The admiral later retracted his statements.

State news source RIA Novosti reported that the ship was tied up for a month to bring it back up to code but the “reactor compartment is the only space to be maintained up to standard” and “in the course of the preventive maintenance the ship's commanders will have time to establish elementary order in the questions of the duty-watch service and of compliance with the Navy rules.”21 It was shortly after this incident that Kuroyedov was sacked by Putin for this and many other failures. The following year on 18 August 2005, Vladimir Putin had enough confidence to sit in Pyotr Veliky’s conning tower during exercises in the Barents Sea. During his trip he witnessed the ship’s missiles rip-off into the distance in a war game. He was impressed and recalled his first encounter during the construction, “These ships are usually built for four or five years, but this one was built in ten years. At that time, they could not only fail to build the cruiser, but the shipyard could have broken up altogether.”22 In 2006, the ship underwent an overhaul to prepare for cruising and for a US delegation lead by Admiral Henry G. Ulrich, commander of US Naval Forces Europe. He was given an inspection of the ship on 29 July 2007 and was the first high level US delegation to visit to the Northern Fleet in eleven years.23 On 23 April 2008, the ship again headed to the Barents Sea for live fire exercises and successfully engaged target drones launched by the Rassvet missile-ship. On 25 November 2008, the Pyotr Veliky arrived in Venezuela for VENRUS-2008 after an uneventful Atlantic crossing. Prior to the trip, the ship had made port calls around the Mediterranean showing the flag. U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack quipped that it was "very interesting that they found some ships that could actually make it that far down to Venezuela."24 American analysts made light of the trip to Venezuela asking if Russia had made sure to bring their tugboats.25 There was no evidence to suggest such action was needed and Pyotr Veliky is currently making its way to South Africa to join up with the fleet for exercises in the Indian Ocean.

The Pyotr Veliky has received much criticism from Western military analysts but begs the question whether such criticism is valid. The flagship of the Northern Fleet has been the most active of all Russian cruisers and has not had a single reported accident in recent times. Vladimir Kuroyedov brought attention to problems that shocked the very foundation of a ship that was supposed to be the model for the Russian Navy. Officials inside the service were saying nothing was wrong while Kuroydov made statements to the contrary; these were made during a power struggle in the Russian Admiralty that he later retracted. According to state information sources, the only thing that was wrong was disciplinary related. There is some merit to Kuroydov’s comments as the sailors pay for the ship was reduced while it was docked and state information services noted personnel deficiencies. The punishment of reduced pay would not affect a conscript to a large degree as their pay is minimal, but it would punish officers. As we will find, discipline is a major concern in the Russian fleet.

The missile armament of Pyotr Veliky is impressive even compared to American Ticonderoga class cruisers. The 20 P-700 Granit missiles might not match up in offensive punch compared to a load-out of Tomahawk cruise missiles, but the defence suite is unmatched in the world. The battle cruiser carries over 500 SAMs of varying ranges and has more CIWS capability than any ship afloat besides the Kuznetsov. With almost one-hundred S-300F/M SAMs gives the ability to take out long distant aircraft and even ballistic missiles. The Klinok defence suite carriers 128 missiles with four channels of fire giving the ship capabilities of the TOR-M1.26 The flagship of the Northern Fleet has six Kasthan modules making a missile strike on the ship all but futile without a hard jamming effort.27 The long range of the S-300F/M makes jamming the ship a difficult task. It has yet to be seen if Western aircraft have the ability to successfully counter the missile system. NATO nations of the Slovak Republic and Greece both have older land versions of the system to exercise with, but it is likely that this ship with TOMB STONE radar has better ECM capabilities than those old systems. The capability to intercept short-ranged ballistic missiles leaves a future position for the S-300F/M system as a possible sea-based ABM defence shield. At the very least, it could operate as a last-ditch defence for strategic coastal targets as it has been proven capable of at least one intercept.

The current cruise undertaken by the Pyotr Veliky is a landmark event for the Russian Federation. Not since the fall of the Soviet Union has a ship gone on a cruise that covers much of the globe. In the last two months it has traveled from the Kola Peninsula to Turkey, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and to the Cape of Good Hope. It still has a long journey ahead for exercises in the Indian Ocean and the cruise home. There were some issues with a crew that spent most of its time on land and only went out if a flag officer or official was going to witness exercises in the past. This was brought to light by Admiral Vladimir Kuroydov and measures were taken to resolve the issues. The ship has since been able to make way with no incident and is completing the longest voyage to date. Results from the live fire exercises appear to have the ship’s weapon systems working as designed. Unlike the Admiral Kuznetsov, this ship has no list of major incidents and has the confidence of the Russian Admiralty to undertake the longest cruise of any ship to date and host US delegations. With recent joint exercises in VENRUS-2008 and the upcoming INDRA-2009, the ship will be one of the most active in the fleet. The commanders are gaining experience as how to operate and maintain this ship under long durations. As to the Western critics who want to deride this ship, their formulations are lacking in merit.

Russian nuclear cruiser sails on mission in Indian Ocean

    RIA Novosti

    30/03/201013:48

SEVEROMORSK, March 30 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) set sail from its base in Severomorsk on Tuesday on a tour-of-duty in the Indian Ocean, RIA Novosti reported from the board of the ship.

"The ship will conduct maneuvers in the Indian Ocean with ships from the Black Sea Fleet and will dock in ports on the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean," a representative of the Russian navy's Northern Fleet said.

He said that the ship will pass through the Atlantic and the Mediterranean waters and enter the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.

Russia announced in 2007 that it was building up its naval presence in the world's oceans. Once one the world's most powerful navies, Russia now has few ships regularly deployed.

In September 2008, Russia was reported to be in talks with Syria about turning Syria's Mediterranean port of Tartus into a permanent Middle East base for Russian warships.

Commander of the Pyotr Veliky, Capt. 2nd Rank Vladimir Minkov said that the port of Tartus is one of the ship's docking points.

Northern Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Nikolai Maksimov said that the ship is ready to begin its mission and that the ship's tour-of-duty will be not shorter than its previous one, which lasted around six months.

The 2008 tour of Pyotr Veliky in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South Atlantic and the Indian Oceans was lauded by many in Russia as the country's naval reappearance on a global scale and criticized in the West as an echo of the Cold War.

During the Caribbean leg of the tour, the cruiser held joint naval exercises with Venezuela. It was the first such deployment since the Cold War when Latin America became an ideological battleground between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Russia's Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered cruiser plies English Channel

    RIA Novosti

    05/04/201014:01

PYOTR VELIKY (Atlantic Ocean), April 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky, deployed to participate in the largest Russian Navy drills in the Indian Ocean, has crossed the English Channel for the first time in her history.

"The ship has indeed passed through the channel for the first time," the commander of the cruiser, Capt. 2nd Rank Felix Menkov, told a RIA Novosti correspondent on board the vessel.

"The English Channel is shallow...and has a great deal of potential risks, including heavy marine traffic both to the south and the north," Menkov said.

Six days after leaving Russia's Northern Fleet headquarters of Severomorsk, Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) traveled around 4,000 kilometers (2,160 nautical miles) and entered the Atlantic Ocean.

During her six-month tour of duty, the warship is to pass through the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea before entering the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.

The Pyotr Veliky will conduct maneuvers in the Indian Ocean with other ships from the Black Sea Fleet and will make port calls in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean, the Russian Navy said.

Russia's largest and most powerful surface combatant warship, Pyotr Veliky has a displacement of between 24,000 and 26,000 tons, and a speed of up to 31 knots (almost 57 km/h). The ship is 251 meters in length and has a crew of more than 700 sailors.

    RIA Novosti

    12/04/201014:59

MOSCOW, April 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky will make a port call in Syria's Mediterranean port of Tartus ahead of Russian Navy drills in the Indian Ocean, a Defense Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

The flagship of Russia's Northern Fleet left the fleet's headquarters in Severomorsk on March 31 to join the warships of other Russian fleets, including the Moskva missile cruiser, in the Indian Ocean.

"At the moment, the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky is crossing the Mediterranean Sea, and will dock in the port of Tartus on April 13," the spokesman said.

In September 2008, Russia was reported to be in talks with Syria about turning Tartus into a permanent base for Russian warships in the Middle East.

Russian cruiser passes Suez Canal on mission in Indian Ocean

    RIA Novosti

    16/04/201002:32

MOSCOW, April 16 (RIA Novosti) - The Moskva missile cruiser has passed through the Suez Canal and entered the Indian Ocean to join other Russian warships for large-scale naval exercises, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, which has a compliment of naval infantry on board, left the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on April 9.

"The weapons and technical equipment on the ship are functioning properly and the crew is healthy," the spokesman said.

The Moskva is a Slava-class missile cruiser designed as a surface strike ship with some anti-aircraft and ASW capability.

Meanwhile, the Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered missile cruiser from Russia's Northern Fleet has recently arrived in Syria's Mediterranean port of Tartus ahead of Russian Navy drills in the Indian Ocean.

Russia announced in 2007 that it was building up its naval presence in the world's oceans. Once one the world's most powerful navies, Russia now has few ships regularly deployed.

A Russian Pacific Fleet task force, comprising an Udaloy class missile destroyer, Marshal Shaposhnikov, a salvage tug and a tanker, is currently on an anti-piracy mission off the Somali coast.

Russia's Medvedev oversees naval phase of Vostok-2010 military drills

    RIA Novosti

    08:59 04/07/2010

PYOTR VELIKY MISSILE CRUISER, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is overseeing on Sunday the naval phase of Russia's Vostok 2010 military drills in the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East on board the heavy nuclear-powered cruiser Pyotr Veliky.

The drills began on June 29 in Russia's Far East training areas and involved some 10,000 troops and around 1,000 items of military hardware. The first phase of the drills ended on Saturday. The second, naval phase will see the involvement of several times more service personnel and military equipment. The exercises continue until July 8.

Apart from the Pyotr Veliky cruiser of the Russian Northern Fleet, the drills also involve the Guards guided missile cruiser Moskva of the Black Sea Fleet.

As many as 12,500 troops took part in last year's intermediate drills, while the previous large-scale Vostok 2008 drills involved more than 8,000 troops.

Gen. Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, earlier said this year's strategic drills would include the firing of live ammunition, simulated airborne assaults and amphibious assault landings.

As part of the drills, the Armed Forces will practice the deployment of additional troops in Siberia and the Far East to reinforce the existing military contingent in the region in case of a military conflict.

Makarov stressed that the Vostok 2010 drills were not aimed against any country.

"This exercise...is not directed against any specific country or military-political bloc. It has a purely defensive nature in ensuring the security and national interests of the [Russian] state in the Far East," he said.

Russia holds Vostok strategic command-and-staff drills every two years.

Here's a lil tour of the Peter the Great from RIAN.

    Funny things to look at:

    1. Fat guy working out in Exercise room
    2. "A wide screen TV set is located in the companion cabin" - (It turns out to be kinda small)
    3. "The spirit room is used to store the dry red wine that is given daily to the crew in order to offset the harmful impact of the cruiser's nuclear reactors." - (Fairy tales xD)

    2. "A wide screen TV set is located in the companion cabin" - (It turns out to be kinda small)

Looks to be the size of the 5 person table in front of it.

BTW wide screen is a TV term that means the screen does not have a normal ratio of width to height of 4:3. A screen that has a different ratio from 4:3 with the screen much wider is termed a wide screen TV and that has nothing to do with the actual size of the screen. I have a wide screen LCD display on my camcorder which can record in lots of wide screen formats.

Among other contracts signed were those for construction of a Project 21300 rescue ship at Admiralteyskie Verfi shipyard and modernization of Project 11442 nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov (former Kalinin) which had been waiting for general overhaul since 1999 at Sevmash shipyard. After repair, Admiral Nakhimov will be stationed at Pacific Fleet, reports RIA Novosti referring to a spokesman for defense industry. Modernization of Admiral Nakhimov is essential because the only operable ship of this class Petr Veliky will be laid up for repairs in the nearest years, said Andrei Frolov.

So overhaul and repair for Peter, guess the electronics need to be modernized. Also some weapon systems maybe.
But that means that Northern fleet will have no flagship. No aircraft carrier and No heavy cruiser.

For a minor upgrade they might update the communications equipment and replace a few minor systems, but these vessels will get a complete upgrade at some stage as their primary weapons are no longer in production (RIF and Granit) so it would make sense to rip out all the weapons and replace them with contemporary systems... is the Redut SAM VLS system and the UKSK VLS system for missiles. The UKSK system can replace the Granit (with Oniks and Klub) and the Silex (with Klub anti sub rocket launched torpedo system similar to ASROC).

They will also likely install the Sigma battle management system to make her compatible with the rest of the fleet.

The final upgrade will likely include replacing the 130mm guns with new 152mm guns and also with the Morfei short range SAM, Pantsir-S1 replacement for Kashtan-M, and the Redut/Poliment SAM system... most of which is probably not totally ready yet.

My guess is that they will also rip out the complicated propulsion system and install a new generation nuclear reactor that will also likely be fitted to the Kuznetsov when it is upgraded.

BTW as this is a thread about Peter the Great, I just remembered there were actually 5 hulls laid down... one ended up being fitted out as a huge spy ship. With one vessel scrapped perhaps they could use the four remaining hulls to upgrade?

Of course it makes sense to upgrade 2 and see how effective/efficient/useful they are and then perhaps decide on the other two.

"Shlemov added that decision on modernization of nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov (Project 11442 Orlan) would be made in Sept; RUR 5 bln was appropriated for that purpose in this year.

"State defense order provides 5 billion rubles for that purpose. But to open this project, we have to sign appropriate documents", Shlemov said.

As for him, so far it has not been decided whether to upgrade the cruiser. "This project was put into Defense Order 2012, the decision is to be made in September", said the official. "

So now we will finally se, perhaps.
Russian navy needs modernized capital ships, since building new cruisers is far away i put my money on a green light.
At the same time, Kutsnetsov is due to be modernized, and also Peter the great should soon be rebuilt to accomendate USUK. Perhaps the Nakhimov
will be first, and the other Orlans will follow.

Northern Fleet (NF) nuclear-powered cruiser Petr Veliky left Severomorsk setting course for the White and the Kara seas, reported Western Military District Press Service.

The cruiser's crew headed by Capt 1 Rank Vladislav Malakhovsky will head for subarctic regions of the Northern Sea Route to perform a number of scheduled combat training tasks.

The deployment of Petr Veliky will be carried out under national doctrine which implies resuming of regular presence of Russian warships in key regions worldwide. Petr Veliky is the only in-service nuclear-powered cruiser of third-generation Project 1144 Orlan. She was laid down at Baltiysky Zavod shipyard on Aug 25, 1986 and launched on Apr 25, 1989. The cruiser effectively passed sea trials in 1996 and performed interfleet cruise from Baltiysk to Northern Fleet (NF) main base Severomorsk. Russian naval ensign, St. Andrew's flag was hoisted on the ship on Apr 18, 1998.

Petr Veliky was declared the best Northern Fleet ship in 2000, 2002, and 2003. The ship won the Navy Commander's Prize for missile firing in 1999, 2000, and 2004. The cruiser was deployed in 2003, 2005, 2008-2009, 2010, and took part in the presidential exercises of 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2010.

In 2008-2009, cruiser Petr Veliky was on mission for almost 6 months which was the longest surface deployment in Russian Navy's contemporary history. Through that period, the cruise passed three oceans, performed two transatlantic cruises, sailed in the Mediterranean, the Red, the Arabian, the Caribbean, and other seas, reports Western Military District Press Service.

Media: Cruiser Petr Veliky Becomes Russia's Missile Defense Component

Flagship of Northern Fleet (NF), nuclear-powered missile cruiser Petr Veliky has become an element of Russian maritime missile defense being currently shaped, an insider in defense ministry told Izvestiya.

"During the deployment to Arctic zones of the Northern Sea Route, Petr Veliky held tests of missile defense elements as maritime segment of Russian integrated missile defense system in cooperation with recently founded Aerospace Defense Force", the source said.

He emphasized that the deployment of the NF flagship was held under Russian Maritime Doctrine which provides resuming of regular presence of Russian naval ships in key regions worldwide. Numerous training tasks are being carried out during the deployment, e.g. rescue operations, ice reconnaissance, etc.

"Fr om the viewpoint of missile defense, current tactical exercise in the Arctic is very important, since that is wh ere main trajectories of American land-based ballistic missiles go", he stressed.

Air/missile defense capability of nuclear-powered cruiser Petr Veliky is provided by mid-range (200 km) SAM systems S-300F Fort (48 missiles) and S-300FM Fort-M (46 missiles). To engage air targets in close-in zone, the cruiser has 16 launchers of Kinzhal SAM system (128 missiles) and 6 antiaircraft gun/missile systems Kortik.

Naval arms expert and chief editor of the Arms Export magazine Andrei Frolov pointed out that Petr Veliky was used as a missile defense element because Russia had not other ships suitable for such missions, writes Izvestiya.

"In Russian Navy, cruiser Petr Veliky is the most appropriate ship for ballistic missile interception. But generally, a nuclear-powered missile cruiser is too much for such purposes", said the expert. Besides, Andrei Frolov pointed out that defense ministry's decision to upgrade similar cruiser Admiral Nakhimov was also connected with sea-based missile defense strategy. Moreover, capital repair of missile cruiser Admiral Lazarev is also possible, added the expert.

"Indeed, recommission of those multipurpose nuclear-powered ships will definitely increase Russia's missile defense capabilities. However, if the government and defense ministry want to have really effective sea-based missile defense, it is necessary to build new ships, and the most suitable asset for that function is a destroyer-class ship which project is only under development now", Frolov said.

Project 1144 Orlan nuclear-powered missile cruiser Petr Veliky was developed by Severnoye Design Bureau. The ship was commissioned into Russian Navy in 1998. Full displacement is 25,860 tons, life-support endurance is 60 days, complement is 635 men, full speed is 32 knots (60 kph).

Except for air/missile defenses, armament of the cruiser includes 20 antiship missiles P-700 Granit, automatic gun mount AK-130, and antisubmarine rocket torpedo system RPK-6M Vodopad. The ship accommodates two ASW helicopters Ka-27. All-weather three-dimensional search radars Fregat-MAE are capable to detect targets at altitudes up to 30 km and ranges over 300 km.

According to Vzglyad, last Thursday at 9 am the cruiser's helicopter Ka-27 landed 9-men marine unit on the Kotelny Island, and then the radio contact was lost. It was reported later that the helicopter performed distress landing on the Kotelny Island in the Laptev Sea.

Possible reasons of that rough landing were reported as well.

Was multiple ships, not just Peter the Great. I guess they wanted to use essentially the entire nuclear fleet in a coordinated exercise.

Shouldn't be too expensive to run, and they didn't have to fight any real thick ice, so no hull wearing.
