    Great Prophet 9 Maneuvers

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has launched massive war games in the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the south of the country.

The maneuvers, code-named the Great Prophet 9, kicked off Wednesday morning.

The drills started with maritime mine operations by speedboats as well as the firing of four coast-to-sea missiles in the strategic Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz.

IRGC’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said that 20 new missiles, including underwater ones with a speed of 100 meters per second, will be tested during the military exercises.

The drills also feature other military equipment, including speedboats equipped with naval radars, electronic communications systems, cruise missiles with a range of 25 kilometers, anti-ship medium-range missiles, medium- and large-caliber torpedoes, sea mines, heavy machine guns, rocket-launchers and shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.

Iran will also fire coast-to-sea and ground-to-ground ballistic missiles during the drill.

The maneuvers, which involve state-of-the-art military equipment, are aimed at demonstrating IRGC’s prowess in defending the country’s interests in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has conducted several war games to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly said that its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

The First stage started by mine dropping at the coast of Lark Island.
second stage started by flight of drones and counter attack of hundred of IRGC
Fast attack boats at the 9:30 o'clock and lasted for 15 minutes. using manpads to destroy the enemy drones was part of this stage.
at 9:50 The third stage started by firing 20 missiles toward mock aircraft carrier.
firing 4 antiship ballistic missiles from Jask Island at 270km away was part of this stage.
at the forth stage, IRGC fast attack crafts started a mass attack and fired about 400 rockets and missiles at the aircraft carriers.

The fast attack boats appear to be in a somewhat tight formation. In my amateur opinion, wouldn't it be better to spread out when swarming large ships?

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has unveiled a torpedo-armed watercraft which is capable of operating both on and under water.

The domestically-manufactured submersible watercraft, dubbed Zolfaqar, was showcased for the first time at a public exhibition on Saturday, Fars news agency reports.

The 17-meter-long military equipment weighs about 22 tonnes and has a speed of 40 knots (more than 70 kilometers) per hour on the sea surface.

Zolfaqar also employs a four-meter-long torpedo which can target aircraft carriers, vessels weighing up to 200 tonnes, oil platforms as well as loading and unloading docks.

IRGC Navy shows ''Zolfaqar'' submersible torpedo boat for the first time

IRGC Navy showed its ''Zolfaqar'' submersible torpedo boat for the fist time in an exhibition at ''Khalij fars martyrs'' artificial lake in Tehran.

This vessel has a length of 17 meters, width of 3.3 meters, height of 3.5 meters and weight of 22 tonnes.

It has a speed of 40 knots(70 km) and is equipped with 324mm torpedoes.

Zolfaqar is a cross between a speed boat and a submarine.

Nice looking vessel... I wonder what its tactic is...

Would it be high speed approach and then when it starts getting fired upon it submerges and attacks with torpedos.... or does it lurk submerged near the path of targets and launch a torpedo attack and then surface and run back to base for a quick reload?

    An innovative vessel for sure

I know others have used submersible boats (AFAIK USSR/Russia too), but only small ones for SF insertion and such.

Actually the Soviets had a design of a seaplane that could submerge... it had a periscope and twin propeller engines with electric engines for underwater propulsion and two under fuselage torpedoes as a main armament.

Not sure how it would have worked either... fly up and land and then submerge to fire torpedoes or lie in wait submerged... fire torpedoes and then surface and take off to escape.

Garry, do you have any links etc on this? Would love to read about it. Had heard similar stories back home in Minsk.

Great news. No doubt for escorting Iran oil Tanker in Ocean. Looks like modified oil Tanker design, with Ramp, to allow below deck storage. Virtually all Iran mobile BM launcher, can be carried. So if Yank come close, they get BM into white house! LOL.

It will mainly be used for logistics. And the only equipment they say they carry, is off the shelf stuff. The design allows for many variations or flexibility. I am sure it can be used for Arms sales to other countries. The number of vessel is " 1". Meaning that there can be number "2" or.....

As a missile Boat, it can be parked off the US coast. In advance of a war party from US reaching Iran. There it can deploy underwater missile launch capsules or tubes. With a dead man's switch on board ship. In this way, it can preempt any US offensive move. And act as detterent.

I may add that, it is far better to push back US deployment from PG and Indian Ocean. As far as we can. So they can not use long range weapons. Far better than drawing them close, to allow use of Iran's shorter range weapons. But of course this detterent, stops any escalation or war , or heavy deployment.

The Iranian Navy strategy write large, offense in numbers. A bit of fake stone on top and these could be camouflaged as tipper trucks.

They aren't stupid to stock all the missiles at the same place. So if they stock this many at one place then their total number is huge. They probably have hundreds of storages like this.

The main threat is USA, not regional states. And a conventional symmetric war, will be won by them, as they have the much bigger economy. Only a non-conventional arsenal will safeguard Iran. Needing only a limited number of launch platforms, ship and Subs or blue water navy. Here are a couple of Oceon going new ships.
