and here's that famous SVBIED ramming into an abrams...

we can see that the gun barrel and front hull are completely charred... but the turret has managed to turn afterwards at least.

    Nice. Abrams is a beast.
Not sure about the crew's SA.. or maybe there's good reason they did not react in a timely fashion.

Three Green Berets killed by ISIS infiltrator after CIA ignored warnings SOFREP Original Content

    By Jack Murphy 11.16.2016#Expert Analysis

Green Berets Matthew Lewellen, Kevin McEnroe, and James Moriarty approached the Prince Faisal Airbase in Jordan in their vehicle along with one Jordanian military officer. They were assigned the IA mission, meaning inter-agency, as a part of the CIA’s Timber Sycamore covert operation to train and arm so-called moderate Syrian rebels. At the gate there was an exchange of gunfire which Jordanian authorities have described as a, “chain of unfortunate events.” Amidst the bedlam at the gate, a Special Forces Team Sergeant confronted the the shooter after failing to deescalate the attack. The Team Sergeant wounded the shooter during the firefight, who is now being held by the Jordanian government for questioning.

Initial reports were conflicted with each other, and a subsequent FBI investigation describes finding no trace of terrorist activity involved in the incident. At first the Jordanians claimed that one of the Special Forces soldiers opened fire at the gate unprovoked. A second story claimed that one of the Americans accidentally discharged his weapon leading to a confused firefight of mistaken identity. However, according to multiple sources inside Special Forces, the shooter conducted a deliberate and pre-planned assault on the 5th Special Forces Group members. Multiple sources confirmed that the shooter is an ISIS sympathizer. Lewellen, McEnroe, and Moriarty, who were in the process of transitioning back to the United States were killed, the Jordanian officer injured.

The only detail left uncertain is if the shooter was a Jordanian military gate guard, or if he was actually one of the “moderate” rebels which the Special Forces men were there to train.

The slaying of three Green Berets comes after years of the Special Forces soldiers assigned to the CIA’s Timber Sycamore program complaining that the moderate rebels they had been sent to train were actually ISIS and al-Nusra infiltrators. The vetting that the CIA does of the rebels is dubious at best, consisting of bio-metric trace searches in old databases which are far from comprehensive. The Special Forces soldiers have repeatedly brought up the fact that the rebels they have to train have also failed their polygraphs and display allegiances to Islamists during interviews. Such concerns have also been expressed by the CIA’s para-military component, called Ground Branch, which have also gone ignored.

Are we 100% sure about the same Abrams?, Normally the gun should be in a far worse condition. All the rest is OK, it's a external explosion with no penetrating power hitting the tank at its best bit.

With the size of that explosion shouldn't almost the whole side, including turret have been at least scorched? Is the paint on an Abrams special anti-burn?

its simply that the quality of the explosive is very low.. makes a huge quick fireball but not much power in it. also seems to have exploded half a meter before reaching the tank.

the BMP on the other hand was completely destroyed by the other SVBIED.

anyway nowadays daesh hardly get in 4-5% of the SVBIEDs they send... the vast majority being successfully intercepted. Inside the city however we can see how dangerous they can be, charging in from blind bends without warning... a failure by iraqi forces to have sufficient UAVs to observe ahead and have the feed sent to all frontline vehicles.

I wouldnt just say "bad explosive", its probably absolutelly rubbish mixture with many impurities, and that goes beyond "bad quality". They use what they have. Last year they captured in Iraq SVBIED filled with pressurised gas cillinders, landmines which for they lacked fuses and similar stuff and only 25kg of TNT to activate all that.

Glad to hear the enemy have substandard explosives and also substandard tactics.

Despite this being an Imperial weapon of evil, it is being used for good for the defence of a country that can use all the help it can get... I for one am glad in this case that the Abrams kept its crew safe.

They seem to mount HJ-8 on enclosed turret. Even with the rear opening I wouldn't do that for starters. HJ-8 pops the empty casing behind (usually very hot and sometimes you have surprises, just like with the MILAN).

Also driver opens door to communicate...wtf do they have radios for?

Dingo banged up they still roll with it. I counted 4 RPG's. Pff big mess.

Also they lost the captian and probably the two sergeants with the SVIED.

Update on Mosul op as of November 25:

ICTF and Iraqi army have liberated the following districts in East Mosul: Tahrir, Adan, Zuhoor, Ikhaa, Shiqaq Khadhraa, Muharibeen, Masarif, Karkookli, Arbajiya, Zahraa, Jamiaa, Qadisiyah 2 (and they have at least entered Qadisiyah 1), Intisar, Jadaidat almufti, Shaimaa, Salam, Malayeen 3, Samah, Sheeshan, Tilfisyon, Maqbarat altilfisyon, Baawizah, Sadah, Dur al Amin, Mualimeen, and others.

It is hard to keep track exactly of the progress, but the past 2-3 days saw a clear uptick in the amount of districts liberated. The joint forces (Army from the north, ICTF from the east, and Army from the south east) now control ~50% of East Mosul, and are have entered other areas. They are getting close to reaching the Tigris river.

In the southern front, the Federal Police have declared that all areas south of Mosul have been cleared. They are currently awaiting orders to begin storming the city from the south, starting with Mosul airport.

In the west, the Hashd Alshaabi are have encircled Tal Afar. They have linked with Peshmerga forces in Sinjar, cutting off Mosul from Syria. The Iraqi Army (15th Div?) have reportedly begun moving into Tal Afar airport, in preparation for the storming of Tal Afar. It seems either the Iraqi Army will conduct the Tal Afar operation, or it may be a joint operation with the Hashd.

Sorry, could not find any up to date maps.

    Fascinating if true.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi intelligence teams have seized the Islamic State’s notary archives south of Mosul as the extremist group continues to lose ground to advancing government and popular forces.

A security source told Alsumaria News Saturday that the registry was discovered at the Omar Kan village, south of Mosul. He said the data base included “computers, financial and agricultural registries, sale and rental contracts for farmlands taken over by the group and later rented out to its members for expensive rates under the name of the ‘agricultural and animal resources authority.”

The source added that the “information bank”, as he called it, also contains computerized information on the group’s financial dealings with other countries, labeling it “a real treasure.”

Iraqi government forces and popular volunteer militias have continued successful advancements to clear ISIS’s last stronghold in Iraq. While government forces said they began moving towards the eastern shore of the Tigris River, popular troops advance further to the strategic town of Tal Afar, a vital bastion for ISIS.

A local source in Nineveh told Alsumaria News that ISIS have also begun to impose tight measures as for the passing of militant between the eastern and western shores of the Tigris River. The source explained that the measures came after US-led coalition air forces recently destroyed the last of five bridges crossing over the river, which deeply confused the group as it meant a great threat to the sustainability of supplies passing to the combat front in the east.

“ISIS have begun to adopt a paper stamped with its red seal as a safeguard for members passing from the eastern to the western shore through boats made to offset the destruction of bridges,” said the source, who explained that the red seal gives exceptions for certain members as the group fears collective escapes by militants to the western side.
