    Restoration of the independence of the Baltic states

    Starting with Vilna, 1991

    1991: Bloodshed at Lithuanian TV station

    At least 13 people have been killed and more than 140 injured by the Soviet military in the capital of Lithuania as Moscow continues its crackdown on the Baltic republic and its drive for independence. Troops broke through the defences set up by more than 1,000 protesters who had gathered to protect a Lithuanian radio and television centre at about 0200 local time. Soldiers then smashed through the glass windows of the station and overwhelmed defenders armed with sticks.

    Interesting photo, from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G_-rsIcaN4

    It seems like those Vilnius protests have lots in common with the Maydan, Ukrainian & Polish flags.
    Dare I assume those protests in the Baltics were nothing but a western-funded Maydan-like project?

    More than likely the meddling was there. But the success of NATO was to brainwash the populations of
    the Baltic Republics that they were living under occupation. Occupation regimes do not develop economies
    but propaganda can be very effective.

    Anyway, they are swimming in the pool (cistern) of freedom now. I am glad that Russia diverted a huge
    amount of economic activity way from these bitter, hateful toilets. Ventspils went from one of the most
    important ports in Europe to an unused husk.

    @KVS

    Geographical features on the Earth , provide for different agricultural environments . The most important feature is water . Fresh water first for agriculture . Followed by salt water ( sea and fisheries ) . The analogy that I can make , is that , if you imagine pouring water on dry soil . Then that area coalesses . Forming an area demarcated from surrounding soil by cracks . This area then exhibits different properties . The analogy is to human society . Different agro / economic cultures are built up over centuries . Similar effect with land next to coast . Water soaks in , thus far . Solidifying the soil . A crack develops . Demarcating the area . From areas further inland . As different coastal communities form over centuries .

    Where different cultures exist . Then differences in lifestyle and wealth exist . The poor envy the rich . In Syria , people living in desert regions in the east . Envied the relative wealth of people living in the west . Near the coast . Extremist ideology then forms an expressive medium for economic problems . Why is this important ? Well , if people knew the cause of their problems . Then they are less likely to blame each other . And more likely to find solutions . Allowing for diversity and coexistence . Investment by outsiders in these poor regions can take advantage of this phenomenon .
