In-Depth Coverage MOSCOW, July 26 (RIA Novosti) - India launched its first nuclear-powered submarine on Sunday for sea trials, national media reported.

The launch ceremony of the 6,000-ton INS Arihant (Destroyer of Enemies) was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, the Times of India said.

The submarine completes India's nuclear triad, making it the sixth country after the U.S., Russia, China, France and the U.K. to have land, air and sea-based nuclear strike capability.

The submarine will be armed with torpedoes and missiles, including 12 ballistic missiles, and can also be armed with cruise missiles, the paper said. It is powered by an 85-MW reactor, and can reach a submerged speed of 44 km/h (24 knots). It will carry 95 crewmembers.

The long-running project to build the submarine, completed with Russian help, is part of a $2.9-billion plan to build five submarines.

The design was based on a Charlie 1 submarine that India leased from the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. Sea trials and weapons tests will take place in the Bay of Bengal, and the submarine is expected to enter service in two or three years.

Killer K-4 Undersea Missile test fired From Arihant Submarine





Not withstanding international pressures India has secretly conducted the maiden test of its nuclear capable undersea ballistic missile, code named K-4, from homegrown submarine INS Arihant at an undisclosed location in the Bay of Bengal.

A reliable source on Friday told ‘The New Indian Express’ that the test conducted on March 31 nearly 45 nautical miles away from Vishakhapatnam coast in Andhra Pradesh was highly successful. The indigenously developed weapon with a dummy payload was reportedly launched from the submarine in full operational configuration.

The trial was carried out with the support of the personnel of Strategic Forces Command (SFC) while the DRDO provided all logistics. The missile was fired from 20-meter deep and it pierced into the sky after breaking the water surface. INS Arihant had first successfully fired a prototype of K-15 (B-05) missile in November last year.

The K-4 missile was fired from onboard silos of the ship submersible ballistic, nuclear (SSBN) submarine demonstrating the capability of the newly built underwater warship to fire long range nuclear capable missiles and the killing efficiency of the most advanced state-of-the-art weapon system.

“Having an operational range of nearly 3,500 km, the missile was fired towards north for a shorter range. It covered more than 700 km before zeroing on the target with high accuracy reaching close to zero circular error probability (CEP),” informed the source.

DRDO officials however refused to speak on the mission. While the officials associated with K-4 mission and Arihant project were tight-lipped, Director General of DRDO Selvin Christopher did not respond calls from this paper.

On March 7, this missile was test fired from a submerged pontoon (replica of a submarine) positioned nearly 30 feet deep sea offshore Vizag coast. Although, the DRDO didn’t officially confirm about the secret mission, it was learnt that the test was a roaring success.

Even as the DRDO had reportedly conducted the first test of the missile system, which was developed under a secret project, in 2010, it officially admitted to have a missile named K-4 with a video footage of the missile launch in the Aero-India show in January last year.

Reports indicated the K-4 missile with the features of boost-glide flight profiles is designed to defeat any anti-ballistic missile systems. Equipped with the satellite updates to modify accumulated errors from its inertial navigation system, the weapon system is claimed to be quite dangerous and one of its kind in the world.

The 111-metre-long INS Arihant has four vertical launch tubes, which are capable of carrying 6 torpedoes of 533 mm and 12 B-05 (K-15) missiles or 4 K-4 missiles.

Powered by an 85 MW capacity nuclear reactor with enriched uranium fuel, this submarine can achieve surface speeds of 12 knots to 15 knots, and submerged speeds of up to 24 knots, carrying a crew of 95.

Apart from Arihant, the K-4 will also arm another Arihant class submarine INS Aridhaman which is currently under construction along with two others. These submarines will have eight launch tubes each.

Country’s first armed nuclear submarine, INS Arihant, is currently undergoing sea acceptance trials, a senior Naval official said on Sunday.INS Arihant is now undergoing sea acceptance trials as it had already passed several deep sea diving drills, Flag Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Vice-Admiral HCS Bisht told reporters here.

“The submarine will be commissioned after completing all the sea-trials,” he added.INS Arihant, a 6,000-tonne submarine, is country’s first indigenous nuclear submarine and can launch nuclear weapons from underwater.

The vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel Project at the Ship Building Centre here.

Stating that India Navy has presently adequate strength of ships, submarines and manpower, Bisht said 45 ships are under-construction in various shipyards in the country.

The Navy had successfully conducted the International Fleet Review with the support of various agencies including the Andhra Pradesh government and the Vizag district administration, he informed.

To a question, Vice Admiral Bisht said the Indian Navy’s warship INS Viraat will be decommissioned this year and it will be converted into a maritime museum.After decommissioning the ship will be handed over to the Andhra Pradesh government,” he added.

Meanwhile, the local MP, MLAs and several residents sailed on-board the Eastern Fleet ships and witnessed various Naval exercises as part of the ‘Day at Sea’.Eight ships including the indigenous stealth frigate INS Satpura, fleet support ship INS Sakthi, Landing Platform Dock INS Jalashwa, Landing Ship Tank(Large) INS Airavat, Missile Corvettes IN Ships Kanjhar and Nishank, Inshore Support Vessels T-36, T-39 and submarine INS Sindhukirti of the ENC participated in the event, a defence release said.

INS Arihant has completed all trials and weapon launch tests, and is soon going to be inducted in India's Navy fleet.

This is a big fillip to PM Narendra Modi's Make-in-India campaign as INS is India's first indigenously developed nuclear armed submarine.

Top government sources said Modi is likely to announce the formal induction in the Indian Navy anytime soon.

Sources said the induction of this 6000 tonne plus indigenous nuclear submarine should coincide with the completion of Modi government's two years in office on May 26.

"The submarine has passed all deep water and other tests and is ready for induction. It is just a matter of time that its formal induction (which is closely being monitored by the Prime Minister's Office) will be announced," said a source close to the development.

With the induction of INS Arihant, India will join one of the few super powers in the world that possess the knowledge of designing, engineering and operating a nuclear submarine.

Arihant is the lead ship of the five nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines launched in 2009.

Built at Vishakhapatnam, Arihant has been designed, developed and engineered by various agencies including the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Department of Atomic Energy and the Submarine Design Group of the Directorate of Naval Design, besides private companies such as Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

As against a conventional diesel-electric submarine, nuclear submarines have the capability to stay out at sea longer and without the need to come up to the surface.

Arihant draws its design from design consultations with Russian design bureaus and possesses capabilities to be equipped with short range missiles as also the K4 long range ballistic missile.

"The indigenous nuclear submarine has passed all major tests," sources said.

India currently operates Russian-origin nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra, which it leased for 10 years from Russia in 2012. However, the INS Chakra does not carry nuclear weapons.

India and Russia will undertake advanced discussions this week on the leasing of a second nuclear attack submarine which have been ongoing for a while.

An Indian delegation is heading to Russia in the next few days to carry out talks on the issue, official sources told The Hindu.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Rogozin chaired the 22nd session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) setting the agenda for the summit-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin next month.

Russia has already leased an Akula class nuclear attack submarine to India for 10 years as a package deal along with aircraft carrier Vikramaditya which was commissioned into the Indian Navy as INS Chakra in 2012.

Informed sources said that while Russia has offered another Akula SSN on lease, India is interested in a different and a newer class of boat. Officials expressed hope of concluding a deal very soon.

Submarines are considered the most potent offensive military platforms. While conventional diesel-electric submarines have limited range and endurance, nuclear powered submarines are free of such limitations.

Powered by a nuclear reactor which gives virtually unlimited range and endurance, the submarines can silently traverse oceans hunting for enemy vessels. Nuclear submarines are of two types, nuclear attack submarines (SSNs) and ballistic nuclear submarines (SSBN).

SSBNs are specifically meant to carry missiles armed with nuclear warheads and assure a nation’s second strike capability if attacked first by nuclear weapons.

India’s first SSBN Arihant powered by a 83 MW ncuelar reactor has been under sea-trials since 2009 and is all set for commissioning. At least two more boats of the same class are in various stages of construction.

Indigenous SSNs

In February last, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the design and construction of six SSNs domestically. By the approval, the government had converted part of the ambitious 30-year, 24 submarine building plan from conventional to nuclear.

The plan is to design and build an indigenous SSN based on the experience gained from Arihant and they will be built at the same Submarine Building Complex in Vizag.

The programme is on track and the design phase is progressing as per schedule, officials said without elaborating further.

Senior Navy officials had in the past expressed confidence that they would be able to reduce the timelines for such a complex project which typically takes about 15 years.

Indian Navy currently operates thirteen conventional submarines and one nuclear attack submarine leased from Russia. In contrast, China operates five SSNs, four SSBNs and over 50 conventional submarines.

India has commissioned its first nuclear-powered submarine capable for launching medium range nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles. With the INS Arihant now in service, India has completed its nuclear triad, making it capable of launching nuclear missiles from land, air and sea.

The second Indian nuclear submarine was launched

As the Indian magazine India Today reported (almost a month after the event), on November 19, 2017, in the atmosphere of secrecy in the Indian state shipyard Ship Vuilding Center (SBC) in Vishakhapatnam, a second Indian nuclear submarine of national construction was launched, name Arighat. Completion of the ship is carried out in a closed berthing complex-SBC. It is planned that the boat will enter the Indian fleet in 2020-2021. The descent was carried out in the presence of the new Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sithamaran.

Indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant has suffered major damage due to ''human error'' and has not sailed now for more than 10 months, say sources in the Navy.

Arihant is the most important platform within India’s nuclear triad covering land-air-sea modes.

Arihant’s propulsion compartment was damaged after water entered it, according to details available with The Hindu. A naval source said water rushed in as a hatch on the rear side was left open by mistake while it was at harbour.

The Ministry of Defence did not respond to questions from The Hindu.
The accident

Since the accident, the submarine, built under the Advanced Technology Vessel project (ATV), has been undergoing repairs and clean up, the sources said.

Besides other repair work, many pipes had to be cut open and replaced. “Cleaning up” is a laborious task in a nuclear submarine, the naval source said.

First Nuclear Deterrence Patrol Marks Major Step for Indian Submarine Force

When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced earlier this month that the Indian Navy had completed its first sea-based nuclear deterrent patrol it was more of a statement of intent than a demonstration of a new capability.

The Indian Navy’s new ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) INS Arihant was the boomer that completed the month-long deterrent patrol. Whilst this is not insignificant – it is the first country outside of the five members of the U.N. Security Council to develop this capability – it also shows how far away India is to achieve its goal of joining the other great powers in establishing a credible sea-based deterrent.

Only the U.S., U.K., France and Russia can sustain continuous-at-sea deterrent patrols, which a provides continuous launch capability of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) by maintaining at least one SSBN on station at any one time that could fire a nuclear missile. A continuous patrol requires a minimum of four SSBNs.

The patrol as a statement will have more effect in diplomatic circles than in military ones. India wants to join the club of countries that can support a sea-based deterrent and eventually achieve a continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent. It also means India will have the ability to launch all three air, land and sea-based types of nuclear weapons and a more robust second strike capability.

“The Indians have long desired a nuclear triad that’ll allow it to deter erstwhile adversaries namely Pakistan and China,” Collin Koh Swee Lean, from the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore told USNI News. “The quest for sea-based nuclear deterrent is based on at least the theory that a submarine-launched strategic offensive missile constitutes a highly secure capability by virtue of the characteristics of a nuclear-powered submarine, compared to air and land-based systems which could be taken out.”

Arihant’s design is based on Russia’s Akula-class submarine and it was commissioned in 2016. Displacing 6,000 tons, the boat was built under India’s Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) programme that was confirmed in 1998 although it took other forms before this. The IN has operated the 8,000-ton nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) INS Chakra (former K-152 Nerpa), which it has leased from Russia for 10 years starting in 2012 following extensive sea trials. This has informed the operation of Arihant.

Since its commissioning, Arihant has mainly been used as a training platform and technology demonstrator. The submarine is capable of firing up to four K-4 intermediate range SLBMs that can reach over 2,000 miles or 12 short-range K-15 Sagarika missiles that can hit targets at a range of almost 500 miles. However, India has a policy of keeping its warheads separate from its missiles, so it is unclear if Arihant’s deterrent patrol used armed SLBMs.

INS Arihant was more of like a Technology demonstrator for India, it was a learning experience with regards Development and Manufacturing of Indigenous SSBNs( Ofcourse we took a little help from Russia {i.e in miniaturising the reactor so that it could fit inside the Submarine hull etc) but we have learnt a lot.

The lead nuclear submarine INS Arihant ("Enemy Destroyer") of the Indian Navy successfully launched an unidentified submarine-launched ballistic missile. According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, this launch confirmed the ability of the submarine to enter the nuclear triad of India.

The Indian Navy Submarine Force tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile, hitting a target in the Bay of Bengal. The launch was carried out from the Indian-built nuclear submarine S73 Arihant, which became part of the Indian Navy in 2016. The submarine was laid down in 1998 and launched in 2009, the reactor was launched in 2013. It is the lead submarine of this project, the second submarine of the series is still being tested.

The missile confirmed the declared range and hit the target in the Bay of Bengal with very high accuracy. All operational and technological parameters of the weapon system are confirmed - stated in the message of the fleet.

The Indian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the tests were very important to confirm the ability of the crew of the submarine to use missiles, and the submarine to remain one of the key elements of the Indian nuclear triad. At the same time, the type of the launched rocket is not called. The submarine itself is a carrier of Sagarika K-15 ballistic missiles, 12 UARLs are located in the mines of the submarine, capable of delivering a warhead weighing 1000 kg to a distance of about 400 nautical miles (740 km).

However, back in 2018, information appeared that in the future the K-15 SLBMs would be removed from the submarine and replaced with K-5 missiles with a range of 5,000 km or K-6 missiles with a range of up to 6,000 km, specially developed for Arihant series nuclear submarines. In total, the Indian Navy wants to have four nuclear submarines of this project in the fleet.
