Revealed: Chinese Military’s Powerful New Anti-Air System

NORINCO revealed its newest SWS2 anti-aircraft gun/surface-to-air defense system.

One of the China's largest weapons manufacturers, North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has unveiled its newest anti-aircraft gun/surface-to-air (SPAAG/SAM) system, the SWS2.

The SWS2 is a combination of a 35mm revolver cannon and a block of four surface-to-air missiles, mounted on a remote-controlled turret that sits atop an 8x8 VN1 armored platform. The 23-ton vehicle is reportedly constructed using fully-welded light armor, providing protection from small arms fire and shell splinters.

According to IHS Janes.com, the turret can rotate a full 360 degrees, with the 35mm cannon and the SAMs able to elevate from —2° to 85° and from —5° to 70°. The device will carry 400 rounds of high-explosive incendiary (HEI) 35 mm ammunition that can reach aircrafts flying at a distance of 4,000 meters and maximum altitude of 3,000 meters. The HEI ammunition, reportedly optimized for smaller targets such as drones, can also be fitted with tracer and semi-armor piercing capability.

The SAMs range is not yet specified. It is likely that the vehicle will carry only one load of SAMs, making it dependent on resupply.

According to reports, the machine is currently available for export.

Not that impressed I am afraid... the gun would be superior in range to a 30mm cannon, but I suspect without guided shells it would be rather less effective than a burst of 30m shells against most targets.

the missiles look like MANPADS and therefore would also lack the range to be effective against most air threats including attack helos or drones.

Needless to say a target helo like a Havoc or Hokum could hover at 6-7km range and destroy these vehicles with impunity now. In 5 years time with Hermes they will be able to hover at 15km or more range.

Likely an armed drone with fairly simple beam riding missiles like Kornet could operate at high altitude and shoot down at such a vehicle.

In the 1980s the Tunguska made sense as the 8km range missiles allowed standoff engagement capability with the cannon for use against targets of opportunity.

Tunguska has moved on with longer ranged missiles, but will likely be replaced with a new gun as well which will further extend performance... a 57mm gun with perhaps 12km range reach and missiles able to engage targets out to 20-40km makes it a much more potent vehicle.

In terms of engaging ground targets it also is far superior.

This is just half a Gepard with four stingers ready to fire...

Unless they are actually SA-22 like missiles... a second look suggests they are rather longer than most MANPADS, but only having four ready to fire missiles would be limiting.

Of course the very first 2S6 had only four missiles, with the 2S6M doubling that to 8 missiles...

Arms Race: China’s New Missile Defense System to Defend Against US, South Korea

With ongoing tensions in the South China Sea and on the Korean peninsula, Beijing has deemed its third-generation surface-to-air missile combat-ready.

In the latest sign of a new arms race between the United States and China, Beijing’s Air Force has announced the completion of a new missile defense system.

"Through innovation, ground-to-air defense troops are able to deal with far-range, medium-range and short-range missiles which can come in on high, medium and low altitudes," PLA Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke said in a statement released on China’s Defense Ministry website, according to the International Business Times.

"The capability of China’s air defense and anti-missile systems has greatly improved in the information age we live in. Our ground-to-air forces are now a powerful force to safeguard China’s airspace sovereignty."

In the South China Sea, Beijing and Washington are at odds over China’s construction of artificial islands in disputed maritime territory. While the US has accused China of attempting to establish an air defense zone, Beijing maintains it has every right to build within what it considers to be its own territory and that the island will be used primarily for civilian purposes.

In light of the Pentagon’s continued "freedom of navigation" exercises through the region, the new missile system will ensure that China can defend against incoming projectiles in the event of an attack.

Seoul’s plans to install a US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea is also a point of contention for Beijing. Ostensibly aimed at defending against a North Korean attack, in light of Pyongyang’s recent ballistic missile tests, the THAAD platform’s range also threatens the national security of both China and Russia.

"We will fully upgrade our strategic early warning, air strike, anti-aircraft and anti-missile, information countermeasure, air landing, strategic aerial delivery and comprehensive support," Shen added.

Last week, a Bill Gertz op-ed in the Asia Times noted that China and the United States appear to both be increasing missile stockpiles at an alarming rate.

"Beijing’s arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles has been growing steadily for decades as new systems were fielded in an array of ranges – short, medium and intercontinental," Gertz writes.

"Several long-range cruise missiles, capable of carrying nuclear or conventional payloads also are deployed."

This buildup, according to some, will inevitably lead to conflict.

"The problem is not whether the war will break out, but when," reads a report in China Military Online. "Our task is to develop the ‘trump card’ weapon for China before the war."

China’s Surface-to-Air Defense Missiles Get Major Upgrade

    Beijing has created a state-of-the-art variant of its long-range HQ-16 surface-to-air missile.

As part of a significant upgrade to the projectile, the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) has given the HQ-16 an improved motor and upgraded wings. These improvements give the model, the HQ-16B, a greater range. While the original could strike targets roughly 25 miles away, the new variant can reach a distance of approximately 43 miles, according to sources speaking to IHS Jane’s.

The original model, unveiled in 2011, was the result of a cooperative effort between China and Russia, and is similar to the 9M38E missiles. China has seen a rapid increase in military capabilities over the last few years. This has been partially driven by a need to defend against aggression from the US and it Pacific allies.

"Beijing’s arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles has been growing steadily for decades as new systems were fielded in an array of ranges – short, medium and intercontinental," Bill Gertz wrote in an op-ed for Asia Times.

"Several long-range cruise missiles, capable of carrying nuclear or conventional payloads also are deployed." One principal concern is the United States’ plan to deploy a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to the Korean peninsula. While ostensibly meant to deter North Korea, the system has a range that could allow it to strike the Chinese mainland.

"To develop suitable capabilities of missile defense is necessary for China to maintain national security and improve defense capabilities," Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Sr. Col. Yang Yujun told reporters in July.

"It is not targeting any other country or target, nor is it jeopardizing the international strategic equilibrium."

Got to love the lack of imagination in design from China and the blatant ripoffs. Absolutely no sense of shame.

It is easier to copy the basic design and work from there.

A lot of money and effort goes in to designing basic shapes... why waste money trying to find a unique shape when an effective shape has been developed by someone else...

    Saves time and money...
