Iranian Navy Commander Urges Iran-India Closer Maritime Ties



Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari called for stronger relations between Tehran and New Delhi in maritime fields.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with a top-ranking military delegation from India’s University of Strategic Sciences, Sayyari said Iran and India, as two influential countries in the region, can develop broad maritime relations with each other.

Sayyari expressed the hope that Iran and India would promote their relations in a way to end trans-regional countries’ presence for safeguarding security in the northern part of Indian Ocean.He then said northern part of Indian Ocean is one of the strategic trade areas of the world due to the existence of energy routes.

Elsewhere, Sayyari announced that the country will host navies from 45 world countries since it has received the official membership of a conference of navy commanders of Indian Ocean littoral countries in 2018, IRNA reported.
Earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his country’s enthusiasm for establishing a new era of relations with Iran.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New Delhi, Modi said he has prepared all Indian officials for a new round of relations with Iran.The Indian premier said he was impressed by the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s “positive and constructive” stances in a July summit in the Russian city of Ufa.

Modi said he has felt President Rouhani’s seriousness on the enhancement of Iran-India relations.The Indian prime minister also called for the immediate establishment of a joint commission for the expansion of bilateral relations

Iran starts mass production of new YT534 Valfajr Torpedo

Today in an official ceremony, the mass production of Valfajr torpedo was unveiled by Defense minister, Hossein Dehghan. It has a range of 10-15 kilometers, with a 250kg warhead and diameter of 534 mm.

* Also known as Moudge 5, it's the 3rd ship of its class to be completed after Jamaran (76) and Damavand (77)
* Unlike previous two with their hulls made up of 29 blocks, Sahand's hull has 20 compartments which illustrates a domestic design and not one based on reverse engineering of British Saam class
* Sahand is the first of Moudge family to utilize a stealthy design, reducing magnetic, heat and radar signatures.
* Like its other brothers already in service, Sahand will be equipped with modern Asr phased array radar and IEI optical sensors.
* Reportedly it will have a larger helipad.
* Unlike Jamaran (76) and Damavand (77) equipped with two foreign-made engines, Sahand will have four Iranian-built engines.
* Sahand will be the first Iranian warship to have variable-pitch propellers which increase maneuverability and efficiency.
* Sahand will have enjoy longer endurance compared to previous ships and will carry twice as much armament.
* It will join Iran's southern fleet next year

The Iranian Navy has spied on a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz with drones and subs.

Iranian Tasmin News media outlet has aired a short video, allegedly filmed by a Ghadir-class submarine during a maritime exercise in the Strait of Hormuz.

The footage (click here) shows the submarine or a warship (the image above seems to be taken from a certain height from above the sea level…) somehow aiming or at least pointing its sensors at the American warship. According to the reports from the Iranian media, a drone took part in the surveillance operation as well, taking pictures of the American flattop from above.

In another video, you can see an IRGC drone flying close to the carrier (click here).

It’s not clear if and when the “close encounter” really happened nor the name of the “targeted” U.S. vessel; currently the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier is operating in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

The incident occurred just a few days after ten U.S. sailors were abducted by Iran, following a technical malfunction that caused them to enter Iranian national waters near an island in the Gulf.

On Dec. 26, 2015 an Iranian vessel approached aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman while transiting the Strait of Hormuz and fired rockets in a direction away from the American flattop.

This is not the first time Iranian surveillance planes or even subs operate in the vicinity of an American aircraft carrier transiting across Hormuz. However, especially when sailing in troubled waters, all the aircraft carrier’s defenses (including surface to air missiles) are on heightened alert status and almost no suspect (manned or unmanned) aircraft approaching the ship goes unnoticed.

On the other side submarines can be a significant threat to the U.S. CSGs (Carrier Strike Groups).

During exercises and real ops, submarines regularly slip in the heart of the multi-billion-dollar aircraft carrier’s defensive screen to pretend-sinking U.S. supercarriers, whose underwater defenses are far from being impenetrable.

Iranian Attack Boats Buzz US Ships in Straits of Hormuz ‘Without Incident’


Five Iranian attack boats closely approached two US warships in the Straits of Hormuz, but the encounter was safe, routine and professional, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) told Sputnik

US Navy forces are routinely approached by Iranian maritime forces as they operate in the region, with the majority of all interaction by the Iranians conducted in a safe and professional manner, the statement acknowledged.

CENTCOM head Gen. Joseph Votel was on board the New Orleans at the time, CNN said in an earlier report, noting that the small Iranian craft came within 500 yards of the warship.

The New Orleans is an amphibious transport dock warship that can carry up to 700 Marines. Such vessels are designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they also have the capability to operate transport helicopters.

US officials say Iran has test fired Underwater launched cruise missile launch from Ghadir class submarine ASCM

Iran attempted to launch a cruise missile from a submarine in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday but the test failed, two U.S. officials told Fox News.
An Iranian Yono-class “midget” submarine conducted the missile launch. North Korea and Iran are the only two countries in the world that operate this type of submarine.
In February, Iran claimed to have successfully tested a submarine-launched missile. It was not immediately clear if Tuesday’s test was the first time Iran had attempted to launch a missile underwater from a submarine.
