BACKSTORY: In between my work I am preparing for some certified courses like ACCA and CFA. The problem is there are subjects like Maths and Accounting in which I do not have much interest.

Can you guys share some best practices as to how an individual can develop interest in subjects like Maths and Accounting?

See how much an accountant makes...See how easy for an accountant is to find employment. And see how basic accountancy can become with enough will power.
All you have to do is stop thinking about it, and do it. It took me a whole semester at 40+ yo to get the gist of the subject for my BA-2. Worst 6 months on my life, one's basically an idiot when it comes to that. However when you pick it up, you just want to do that all rest of your life. Ok the hype lasts for about a week, then you see how shitty it is and resume normal activities. But the paycheck though (at least here where I am) for a mid level accountant with multiple languages earns you around 6/7K european monkey money brutto/month (around 4K netto - 50K a year plus some perks). Small biz pays less.

And you just have to cook up books.Think about it.

If you hate something/have no interest, why do it beyond the minimum?

You probably wont succeed forcing yourself to spend 40yrs doing something hate?

Having said that, sometimes we need an understand of something we hate.
    eg maths/accountancy.

I trial and visualise things, and automate using spreadsheets. And also work with someone else who likes numbers but hates the creative stuff.

Maybe just try and understand/do the basics well.Learn it so that it becomes 2nd nature, and not a chore. And assists in waht you have a passion/natural ability for.

But really, I think NEVER go down a path that would bore you rigid.

Lots of businessmen have an accountancy background and find it useful. But they avoid getting bogged down in the heavy number crunching and stuff. Its like most businessmen have websites, but dont write html or do web marketing.

Need these certificates to prove my worth. Having to compete with graduates from Oxford, MIT and Harvard for jobs.

I realize that getting admission into an Oxford, MIT or Harvard is difficult so CFA/ACCA are my next best option. Else, will have to spend the rest of my life doing contract jobs.

Thanks Stealthflanker. Profound insight as usual.

My problem is I like the subjects ( and yes I also know what to do with it) but find the idea of studying very boring.

I found with maths and physics I found things easier to apply them to things I found interesting.

For instance calculating ballistic paths of different real artillery shells, it also helped me remember which formula I needed to make different calculations.

In my final year for my degree in Info Science they changed from relational databases (RDB) to object oriented (Oracle), so we went from SQL to java and I really made the basic mistake in programming... don't get behind. Once you get behind that is it you just get further and further behind as the class learns new stuff and you are trying to learn the stuff they went over last week.

Anyway after just passing the paper in my fourth year most of the info papers required java and I wasn't really interested, so I took a 4th year paper on computer security, and a 4th year multimedia paper, which left me needing two more papers.

When I was in the third year they had a new networking paper which I took instead of a paper on Artifical Intelligence which I regretted as the new networking paper was new and not well organised.

So I took the AI paper in my fourth year but needed a 6 point paper for the first semester so I took Quantative Statistics (QUAN)... I like calculations and formulas but had trouble with the terminology and working out which formula to use when... Managed to get through four years with no fails... Smile

In QUAN you are in a lecture theatre with 600 people, so it was pretty much a man or a woman reading out notes where you scribble examples on the notes provided and that is it... I would have preferred small classes, but most 100 level papers have large numbers of people so it is not practical.

There are books written by real experts that in many instances can get a person interested in a given subject. Often, a lot of the interest gets developed through the right kind of exposure.

Take a look at this classic. http://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Can-Fun-Yakov-Perelman/dp/B000W18X5Q. I am sure free legal copies are available on the net. What do you think?

Most of these kind of books are written by great Russian scientists.

Edit: Here is a free copy. Arrow https://archive.org/details/MathematicsCanBeFun-1

More Editing: The author Yakov Perelman is a legend. His book Physics for Fun (2 volumes) has the record for making people becoming physicists.

Thanks Morpheus. Yes, you are correct. His two books Physics Can Be Fun and Mathematics Can Be Fun were very popular in the Soviet Union, a country that had set new heights in the field of education. Consequently, a number of countries obtained the rights to translate his books.
    Book.

My favorite is to break down a task into ridiculously miniscule parts. The reality is that starting is the hardest part. If you start with steps even smaller than baby steps, you can easily get the ball rolling.
