there is a mistake in that article.

the T50IQ and all other air force training assets will be based in Suwayra air base in Southern Iraq once its completed.

The air force air academy will never return to Tikrit.

The Americans suspended the technical support of the Abrams tanks of the Iraqi army

As the Iraqi newspaper Al Ghad Press reported on January 28, 2018, the American General Dynamics corporation ceased the program of technical and service support of the M1A1M Abrams tank of the Iraqi army at its technical base at Al Matan airport in Baghdad from the end of 2017. This was in response to Iraq's revealed violations of the contractual agreement on the receipt of these tanks, expressed primarily in the transfer of at least two Abrams tanks from the Iraqi army to the pro-Iranian Shiite militia "Khashd al-Shaabi" ("People's Mobilization Force"). It is reported that General Dynamics has previously repeatedly informed the Iraqi government of the inadmissible from its point of view the transfer of Abrams tanks to armed groups that are not part of the Iraqi army.

All American employees of the technical base of General Dynamics at the Al Matan airport departed in the US at the end of 2017 formally for the Christmas holidays and have not yet returned to Iraq. At the request of the US company, the government of Iraq withdrew one Abrams tank from the Khashd ash-Shaabi militia in Anbar province and promised to return it to the company's base in early February. Prior to this, the US side refuses to conduct any work on the base.

General Dynamics also threatened "with the final withdrawal from Iraq" if it turns out that "one state in the region supporting the" Hasd Al-Shaabi "[ie Iran] militia had access to Abrams tanks or reproduced any of their components.

Earlier Iraqi Kurds complained about the use of the Abrams tanks, HMMWV vehicles and other American-made equipment in the fighting against the Kurdish formations in the Erbil area in October 2017, using the "Khashd ash-Shaabi" militia received from the Iraqi army. Then, according to their statements, the Kurds succeeded in destroying two M1A1M tanks of the Shiite militia [the Kurds destroyed with the use of the MILAN ATGM MILAN of one Abrams tank on October 20 - it is possible that the second tank has now been withdrawn from the militia].

According to the newspaper, during the fighting against the "Islamic State" in Mosul, 60 Abrams tanks of the Iraqi army were put out of operation, which now need to be restored, which was what General Dynamics was doing at the technical base in Al Matanah [it is unclear whether this number irrevocably lost tanks].

On the bmpd side, we point out that in total, Iraq received 152 M1A1 Abrams tanks from the United States. The American side supplied the first Iraqi army with the first 140 M1A1M tanks (modified by M1A1 from availability) from August 2010 to February 2011 by agreement of August 2008 with a total cost of $ 2.16 billion. In 2013, six additional M1A1M tanks were delivered to Iraq, and in February 2015 - six more M1A1 for replenishment of losses. Tanks M1A1M regularly equipped with four tank regiments of the 9th Armored Division - the most "heavy" junction of the new Iraqi army (three more regiments of the 9th Division had tanks T-72M1). The staff of the tank regiment is 35 tanks - two tanks in the regiment's control and 11 tanks in three tank companies (each company has three platoons of three tanks plus two tanks in the company's management).

In December 2014, the Pentagon's notification was announced of the forthcoming delivery of 175 upgraded M1A1 tanks from Iraq to Iraq, but there is no information on its implementation.

Already in early January 2015, the magazine "Jane's Defense Weekly" reported that of the 146 M1A1M tanks received by the Iraqi army, by that time 28 machines had been lost or put out of action in the fighting against the "Islamic State."

We also note that reports on the use of the Abrams tanks transferred to the Iraqi army by various Iraqi proshite militias have appeared repeatedly. Thus, as early as 2015, one Abrams tank was used by the Shiite group Kataib Hezbollah.

Thats a chance for Russia to move in

honestly its just sour grapes by the company because Iraq's new T90S/MS hybrid tanks are arriving in February and Iraq rejected buying another 175 Abrams last year.

A bit more on the Iraqi Abrams. As said above, another definite opportunity for the US to be shooting itself in the foot. Again.

Loading of T-90S tanks for Iraq

The appeared video recording of loading in the port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) on a vessel of tanks T-90S. Judging by the color, these tanks are designed to be sent to Iraq.

Recall that, as our blog reported, in the annual report of JSC NPK Uralvagonzavod for 2016 among the priority tasks for 2017 was the beginning of the implementation of the contract with the customer 368 [Iraq] for the delivery of the first batch of 73 T- 90S / UK In November 2017, the TASS agency reported with reference to the statement of the press service of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) of Russia that Russia is implementing a contract for the delivery of T-90S tanks to Iraq and that "the contract is being implemented in accordance with approved by the parties schedule."

Id rather say they are canibalising some tanks to keep other tanks going. As they lost technical support from the manufacturer.

Will the Iraq get a refund or half refund form Uncle Scum Bag for the tanks? Cause this has to suck for Iraq.

i think that shows the main repair yard for the M1A1SA tanks.

on the left side of the picture you can see about 16 tanks which have completed repairs.

And in the right side, you can see about 40 tanks awaiting rework. There's 2 ARVs in that section too (can be seen from the shadows of their cranes). In addition I'd expect another 6-8 tanks inside the buildings undergoing rework.

That tallies with the figure that the 9th AD has usually about 80-90 tanks "available" out of the 152 or so total.

Iraq only recently bought completely new FLIR systems for all the Abrams tanks... with the "old" units supposedly going to upgrade the sights of some of the T72s. Maybe GD are unhappy with Iraq reusing the old Abrams sights on T72s?

here's a ground level video from the same location after the completion of some vehicle repairs

and here's another video with views inside the hangars

Iraqi Defense Ministry receives T-90S tanks from Russia

Iraq’s Defense Ministry has received the first batch of 36 T-90S tanks under an arms contract with Russia

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. Iraq’s Defense Ministry has received the first batch of 36 T-90S tanks under an arms contract with Russia, Shafaq News reported on Monday, citing Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, Lieutenant-General Othman Al-Ghanmi.

Al-Ghanmi, who paid an inspection visit to Basra, confirmed that the 36 Russian-made tanks had been delivered to Iraq. The rest 37 such tanks under the contract would reach Iraq by late April.

Earlier, Arab media cited a source in the Iraqi defense ministry as saying that the T-90S tanks had been delivered to the port city of Umm Qasr on February 15 to be later transported by Baghdad.

The T-90S is an export modification of the T-90 tank. It has powerful armaments, a modern fire control system, reliable armor and high maneuverability. It operates day and night in various climatic conditions and is designed to fight tanks, self-propelled guns and other armored objects.

    T-90S tanks in Iraq

Recall that, as already reported by our blog, in the annual report of JSC Scientific-Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod for 2016 among the priority tasks for 2017 was the beginning of the implementation of the contract with the customer "368" [Iraq] for the delivery of the first batch of 73 In November 2017, the TASS agency reported with reference to the statement of the press service of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) of Russia that Russia is implementing a contract for the delivery of T-90S tanks to Iraq and that "the contract is being implemented in accordance with the approved parties to the schedule. "

In early February 2018, a video recording of the loading in the port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) on a vessel of T-90S tanks appeared, judging by the coloration intended for Iraq. On February 8, Russia's ambassador to Iraq Maxim Maximov said that the first batch of T-90S tanks in the amount of 46 units will be "soon delivered to Iraq." Tanks began arriving in Iraq in mid-February 2018.

although its publicly acknowledged to exist by all, its operations are rather shadowy and shrouded in mist.

There are rare points of actual operations (like Iraqi air force bombing a few km inside Syria) and coordinating Russian Air Force overflights... beyond that its remit is opaque.

Statistics of the combat use of the Iraqi Air Force

The Iraqi Air Force website at www.facebook.com published the interesting official statistics on the participation of the new Iraqi Air Force in the hostilities against the "Islamic State" between June 10, 2014 and December 31, 2017.

Statistics of the combat use of the Air Force of Iraq in the period from 10/06/2014 to 31/12/2017 (c) Iraqi Air Force

In particular, it is reported that for the specified time, the Su-25 attack aircraft of the Air Force of Iraq (in 2014-2016 Iraq received from Russia, Belarus and Iran in total 22 Su-25 aircraft) made 3,562 sorties, while the Lockheed Martin F fighters -16IQ (from 2015 to the end of 2017, Iraq received 18 aircraft from the US) - only 514 sorties. Another 398 combat sorties were made by light combat aircraft L-159 (in 2015-2017, 13 planes were delivered from the Czech Republic). Another 990 assault missions for bombing were carried out by six An-32B military transport aircraft. Finally, 3459 sorties were flown by light reconnaissance-strike aircraft Cessna AC-208B Combat Caravan, which had only three aircraft (then two, in 2017, three more), and they produced 2660 Hellfire missiles.

Attention is also drawn to the intensive use of reconnaissance aircraft (3,241 sorties of Beechcraft 350ER / ISR aircraft and 1118 sorties of Cessna RC-208B aircraft) and military transport aircraft (1,154 flights of Lockheed Martin C-130E / J-30 aircraft and 5949 AN-32B).

Iraqi 35th Brigade is rearmed from M1A1M Abrams tanks to Russian tanks T-90S russia

As the Ministry of Defense of Iraq reported on June 5, 2018, the 35th Brigade of the 9th Armored Division of the Iraqi Army is rearmed from the American M1A1M Abrams tanks to the T-90S tanks received from Russia. To date, the 35th Brigade has received 39 T-90S / SK tanks delivered from Russia, which are distributed between the two tank regiments (3rd and 4th) of the brigade. It is stated that the officers and rank and file of the 35th brigade were trained for T-90S tanks with the participation of Russian instructors. In turn, the Abrams tanks remaining in the 35th brigade were transferred to the 34th Brigade of the same 9th Armored Division, which is now apparently the only brigade of the Iraqi army equipped with Abrams tanks (includes two tank regiments - the 1st and 2nd).
