    In my opinion today's speech by President Putin was important to an extreme.

    In my opinion he clearly stated he knows the intent of the US/Allies ringing Russia with their ABS/Cruise Missile Launch Systems and he clearly informed them that Russia has the weapons to negate all of them and strike back with weapons they can not negate. VVP is not one to purvey bovine scatology nor does he give idle threats. In my opinion he would not have said a word if the systems were not deployed and operational.

    He also said that an attack on any ally of Russia would be considered to be an attack on all of them including Russia and the retribution would be significant.

    The next few days are going to be of interest.

    I agree, president Putin is very cautious man, he doesn't talk in vain...and wouldn't  say all of this if he wasn't sure all systems and weapons are ready, even already operational. Very Happy  I think this is a game changer and soon everybody will know this. We shall see how will USA react on this, but I'm certain they will be silent for a while...this was a heavy punch for them, reality isn't any more what they thought it is. russia

    An interesting aspect of hypersonic weapons is that their speed gives them enormous range.   So it is not surprising that the Mach 10 anti
    ship air to surface missile has a 2000 km range.   A slower variant would have a shorter range.    But there is a wrinkle in this gain of
    range.  It requires super fast control.   So there is a lot of innovation in the guidance circuitry driving these missiles.   We don't hear
    to much about this aspect.   I would surmise that custom, high speed IC solutions are required.    The Mach 20 warhead would require
    temperature resistant ICs.   That is, Russia must have developed silicon nitride semiconductors that can operate at hundreds of centigrade
    without cooling.  

    One of these days Russia will send a probe to Venus that will shock the world.

    Defense Ministry proposes Russians to choose names for weaponry listed in Putin’s address

    Earlier in the day, President Putin suggested that Russians should give names to new types of the country's strategic weapons

    MOSCOW, March 1./TASS/. The Russian Defense Ministry has invited a competition on its official website for the best names for the state-of-the-art weapons mentioned by President Vladimir Putin in his State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

    "Upon instructions from the Russian president, a special service has been launched on the official website of the ministry, designed for choosing the names for Russia’s advanced weapons. From today on, every visitor of the Defense Ministry’s official website can make his or her own contribution to giving the names to three advanced weapon systems, using a user-friendly service (http://mil.ru/vote.htm)," the report said.

    A cruise global-range missile, an unmanned underwater vehicle as well as a laser weaponry wait to be named, the ministry said. "At the first stage of the voting, offers with the names for each system will be selected. Then, the users will be asked to choose the best among the most appropriate versions," it added.

    Earlier in the day, President Putin suggested that Russians should give names to new types of the country's strategic weapons - a cruise global-range missile and unmanned underwater vehicle.

    "By the way, code names for these new two types of Russia’s strategic weapons, which are a cruise global-range missile and unmanned underwater vehicle, have not been chosen yet," Putin said in his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on Thursday. "We expect proposals [to be posted] on the Defense Ministry’s website".

    Russia's Defense Ministry has whittled down the tens of thousands of user-submitted entries for naming its new nuclear-powered cruise missile, submersible drone, and battle laser system, giving internet users a chance to choose their favorite name.

    For the ultra-long range cruise missile, the name Emperor/Monarch is currently leading the pack, collecting more than 26% of the vote. Nezhdanchik (slang for "Surprise"), Palmyra (as in the Syrian city), and Vatnik (roughly "Patriotic Redneck") are also popular, with 17%, 15% and 14.5%, respectively.

    Alyonushka (soft form of the Russian name Alena), Pesets (roughly "Holy Cripes!"), Kolibri ("Hummingbird"), Skuns ("Skunk"), Joseph Stalin, and Zeus round out the top ten.

    Other creative names, some less serious than others, include Sanction, Serp ("Sickle"), Molot ("Hammer"), Tishina ("Silence"), Cheburashka, Argument and Garant ("Guarantee").

    For the nuclear-powered submersible drone, the Defense Ministry gathered a selection of topical ocean or water-related names, with the current favorite being "The Kraken," which leads with 37% of the vote. Yazh ("Ide," as in the fish) is in second with 19%, followed by Poseidon with 7%, Sheptun ("Whisperer") with 6%, and Karas ("Carassius").

    Other popular entries include Bezdna ("Abyss"), Kasatka ("Killer Whale"), Legushonok ("Froggy"), Nautilus, Piranha, and Scepter

    As for the battle laser, leading the pack so far is Oftalmolog ("Ophthalmologist") with 21%, followed closely by Gorynych (as in the dragon of Slavic mythology) and Viy (as in the monster of East Slavic mythology with killer eyes) both with 16%.

    Zaychik ("Bunny") and Basilisk (the legend-based reptilian with the power to cause death with a single glance) round out the top five, with 12% and 10%, respectively.

    Russians have chosen names for the country’s newest weapons by participating in a poll on the Defense Ministry’s website

    MOSCOW, March 22. /TASS/. Russians have chosen names for the country’s newest weapons by participating in a poll on the Defense Ministry’s website, a ministry source said.

    While delivering his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on March 1, Russian president Vladimir Putin suggested that the country’s people choose names for a combat laser complex, an underwater drone and a nuclear powered cruise missile.

    "The name Peresvet won the vote for a name for the combat laser complex. Most people voted for the nuclear powered cruise missile to be named Burevestnik, while the name Poseidon was chosen for the underwater drone," the Defense Ministry source said.

    The poll on the Russian Defense Ministry’s website concluded at 20:00 (17:00 GMT) on Thursday, the source added. This is the first time in Russia’s history that weapons has been named by a popular vote as in the past, the military used to choose names for weapons and military equipment.

    As the Russian leader said, two nuclear-powered weapon systems are currently being developed in Russia. Specifically, these are the short-range missile and the underwater drone, he said.

    "In both cases, we have completed the main stage of development, namely, the work associated with the testing of this nuclear propulsion unit," the Russian leader said, noting that some things still had to be finalized.

    Putin also used name Avangard to refer to cruise missiles used in Syria (Kalibrs obviously) so I would not put too much effort into deciphering this ''short range nuke missile'', clearly wording error on his part.

    The TASS translators f*cked up. They mistranslated low altitude as low range.

    I have noticed this tendency in the English versions of Russian information outlets making all sorts of
    tendacious mistakes and using NATO propaganda language (e.g. "pro-Kremlin parties" as if the 5th column
    is the only real opposition).
