Putin will ditch his Mercedes-Benz for this home made limousine.

    Watch video: http://www.1tv.ru/news/techno/218622

During Soviet times, ZIL limousines were used by top officials. Production stopped in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
ZIL still makes truck and was on the verge of bankruptcy, but new cash was injected recently and the company is being rejuvenated. New truck models as well as the above new limousine are the latest in the pipeline.

I quite liked the back and profile of that concept idea. Personally, I'd have gone for a sleeker front end, to make it a bit more like the Aston Martin Lagonda of the 1980s.

Its good to see Zil back producing again. It didn't seem right to use just Mercs.

Does anyone know how the new Zil was built? Was everything in-house, or was a lot in partnership with other companies from abroad?

Alot of people are tipping the Russian car industry to flourish with Russia entering the WTO.

Actually it is Dark Blue .

It was designed in Russia at the ZIL Limousine Production and the project was headed by Mikhail Sattarov.

ZIL has signed a deal with Korean automaker Hyundai to begin production at its Moscow plant.Bolt-together assembly is slated to start in the first quarter of 2013, while full-cycle production will commence by 2015.

Putin has ordered government departments to seek appropriate domestic alternatives to the mostly German foreign brands that are used in Russia.

The project for a domestically-made limousine, dubbed 'Monolith,' features a Russian-made 400-horsepower engine, together with a US-made transmission.

He made the right choice by going domestic, especially since he's been promoting the domestic industry. I always thought driving around in foreign cars was setting the wrong example.

The external retro look is done apparently on purpose.

It's not a retro look- the car IS retro.

The body and chassis are barely modified from ancient Zil.

    http://www.max-models.ru/data/ZIL_raika/ZIL-4112R_Max-Models.jpg

Those lights look tacky and retarded. They belong on a pimped-out ricer, not a state car.

The car in the 3d render looks like a dream compared to this boat.

Thank You Putin for choosing a Russian car even if they may not be the best presidential car but atleast that would be zillion time better than riding on Mercedes.

TR1 i doubt its the same it would be prototype , the car shown certainly lack bullet proof armour and glass .....likely they would build a few of such cars for Putin and Medvedev and they are just building protoype now.

Presidential cars will never be exposed to media due to security reasons

In the video it says that apparently, some Arab sheiks are expressing interest in the Zil...

Yeah.. More square shaped Volga is strong in fleshed out concept. It's like they spat in the face to everyone that believed it will be modern classic. They should buy license from MB or any other well developed brand. I don't see problem by buying couple foreign cars too. I doubt that few orders from president will change sad state of cars in Russia.  To expect something good is like expect Stephen Hawkins to pass maroon beret trial.
No offense to Russians, but Your all You civilian autoprom should be sent to gulags for re-education. You have countless car designers and engineers working for foreign companies, You have people who have golden hands, why they have to leave to fulfil their talents?

When Russia will start making cars in price range from 50000 to 80000 euros, then I would expect decent limousine version. And yeah I know that there loads of Russians(Kalingrad rulit I razrulit) who pay even more for those cars and even take to Lithuania to get polyvinyl body covers and custom interiors. Market for luxury cars in Russia is massive, domestic manufacturers are ignoring gold mine.

People buy Kalinas and other "triperoids" then most likely they will not have money to go to service and rather go to Petya Fedya Vasya to their garages or just use duck tape to fix their cars. Plus they exploit their cars for long time and that doesn't help as demand in the market will be exhausted eventually.
People who are more successful in their beautiful country and don't moan how life is bad under Putin and how hard is without communism helping hand usually splash money on new cars and other things.
It's not mafia who owns money anymore, I know loads of Muscovites who earn almost same amount of money like they would in UK or elsewhere in EU. Opportunities are there, if people live bad it's their fault not NATO or Putin's Very Happy
Middle class usually don't care much about fuel consumption, high RPMs, they are going to service, they spend fortune on simple luxuries and they upgrade to new cars in very short time. They are the fuel for internal consumption engine:)

It was interesting to read about the plans for a whole range of exec Russian cars.

I was on a call a while back and was doodling some ideas for what I'd want. I wound up with something a lot like one of the Marussia designs. Basically an aerodynamic type thing. Like a modernised version of the 1980s Aston  Martin Lagonda saloon.

I think it would be nice for the new presidential car to be something striking, yet uniquely beautiful. A bit like a mix between a Lamborghini and a Mig... for the road.

The design above is very nice, but it looks v much like a Rolls Royce, with a high waist line. Why copy Merc, Rolls etc? I think the idea is "Russia has its own way, equally as beautiful as the others"..

Cant expect everything to change so fast. Actually, it was only recently that people in Russia are seeing such huge pay rates. Automarket in Russia seems to mostly be about affordability over luxury, and I agree; they need to work in that area too. Would be cool to see a car designed by Mikoyan Smile

Just recently Avtovaz was saved with the introduction of new managers (French) and the Granta car. There is also a whole shlew of other manufacturers, but most of them make popular makes under license. But none in luxury besides maybe Marussia which is just really specialized. They need to look at maybe seeking Mercedes to start manufacturing in Russia. Here in Canada, if 1,000 cars are sold here, it has to be 1,000 cars using Canadian parts or assembled in Canada or there is a massive tarrif, like 200%. So it becomes profitable for companies to open manufacturing here as there are still a lot of buyers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is to receive a model from the first batch of Cortege cars, Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Tuesday.

The Cortege project will provide Russian-made vehicles for the transportation of top Russian government officials — 3.7 billion rubles ($54 million) was allocated to the project this year, RIA Novosti reported.

“The first batch should be released around the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2018,” Manturov said.

The minister added that 200 vehicles will be produced in the first year, all of which at the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) headquarters in Moscow.

Talks are ongoing with the Russian Defense Ministry regarding the creation of an armored off-road vehicle, Mantura said, RIA Novosti reported.

Four vehicle models have been developed as part of the project: a limousine, a sedan, an SUV and a minivan.

Mantura said that the limousine has been put through trials for almost a year and crash-tests for the sedan will begin in April. There are plans to increase the shipment amount to 4,000-5,000 of each model by 2020.
