Five interesting companies from Russia's Skolkovo Startup Village

At the Skolkovo Startup Village near Moscow last week entrepreneurs competed for the chance to win 900,000 rubles to help expand their fledgling companies and set them on their way to fame and fortune.

Startups pitched ideas on a range of topics including healthcare, the environment, energy, communications, retail and consumer products.

Of most relevance to our particular niche was the ‘digital technologies for mass market’ session, which threw up some interesting ideas and some that I can’t ever see catching on.

The latter included an attachable mobile keyboard called Octodon and a new smartphone flash attachment that apparently improves your selfies.

If you want to find out more about the Skolkovo project then check out my article on Russia’s plan to turn it into the new Silicon Valley, or read on for details of some of the more interesting companies on show at the Startup Village...

    Dressformer

The people behind Dressformer aim to take on the likes of Virtusize by providing an effective method for online shoppers to test whether clothes are likely to fit them before making a purchase.

It works by building a 3D avatar which the clothes are then superimposed on to based on the user's measurements. It also syncs with Facebook so people can get their friend's fashion opinions.

Several retailers are already using the system which has reduced returns by 10% and also helped to increase cross-sales. One US retailer saw a 20% lift in cross-sales as Dressformer was able to recommend clothes based on how they would fit the customer.

    Bike Defend

As a cyclist this security app struck me as an interesting idea, though one that might be difficult to implement.

Bike Defend uses a tracking device and mobile app to notify owners when someone has stolen their bike and allow them to track down the thief.

The trackers are built into bike lights, so the thief doesn’t know they’ve been rumbled, and an alarm in the app gives owners a chance to try and foil the crook. However it would take a lot of bravery to chase down and confront a thief.

    Fingo

Fingo is an augmented reality app that enables people to see what furniture and interior design styles would look like inside their home.

It works on a SaaS model, so retailers can fit the technology into their own apps or buy a white label version.

The idea is that a brand like John Lewis could install Fingo within an iPad app and allow users to virtually try out different products in their home before making a purchase.

However, Ikea has already trialled its own version of this technology and personally I’m still to be convinced of the value of AR.

    RoadAR

RoadAR is a navigation app that assists drivers by giving them various warnings, alerts and information.

For example, it’s able to warn people about changes in the speed limit or if there are traffic lights coming up. The app also acts as a Sat Nav by giving drivers directions for their current journey.

It’s a fairly simple idea and I’d be surprised if it hasn’t been done before, but RoadAR has apparently attracted 25,000 users within two months so might make a decent investment if you’re an angel with a chunk of cash to spare.

    Exhibeacon

I’m a fan of this idea as it struck me as something that would be useful at Econsultancy’s own conferences and events.

Exhibeacon uses various beacons and wearable bangles that interact with one another so organisers can track attendees' behaviour at their events.

Users can then access reports and analytics to see whether their conference was a success.

Exhibeacon can also be used to target people with advertising and promotions. The owners are looking for investment so they can enter the market in 2015.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have a website at the moment, so I'm not sure how you can get in touch...

Russia to activate "reactor of the future" at Beloyarskaya NPP

A chain reaction is expected to be launched Thursday in a new-generation reactor at Russia's Beloyarskaya nuclear power plant.

The plant's specialists will initiate a controlled chain reaction in the BN-800 reactor of the plant's fourth unit, Rosatom Deputy General Director Alexander Lokshin said at a conference on Thursday, marking 60 years of nuclear power engineering.

The BN-800 or sodium-cooled fast-neutron reactor, dubbed a "reactor of the future", with an 880 megawatt power generating capacity uses the closed nuclear fuel cycle technology that minimizes nuclear waste and significantly widens the range of elements that can be used as nuclear fuel.

Russia holds the lead in this technology.

Russia’s first 300mm wafer size fab in Moscow certified

Crocus Nano Electronics (CNE), the joint venture founded in 2011 by France’s Crocus Technology and Rusnano, Russia’s state-owned nanotech giant, has successfully completed the certification of its cleanroom in Moscow according to ISO 14644–1 requirements, the Rusnano website announced.

The cleanroom is certified as the state-of-the-art class 1,000 (ISO 6) in the production area. Now all set to accommodate cutting-edge equipment, the cleanroom is the heart of the first 300mm wafer fab in Russia, which will be capable of processing up to 1,000 wafers per week.

“Equipment hook-up is expected to occur in the next quarter and we expect to begin process qualification of our fab equipment in September, 2014,” said Mark Dydyk, the CEO of CNE.

Crocus Technology is a leading developer of magnetically enhanced semiconductor technologies.

    Very good news!

Although, could be hampered if France tried to. But I doubt it. If in case they do, they can obtain equipment elsewhere.

Samara team to develop artificial intelligence for industry
Samara State Aerospace University (SSAU) in the mid-Volga area expects to receive more than a million dollars from the Russian government to cover R&D aimed at developing industrial smart systems to control a company’s resources on a real-time basis, the university announced.

The team behind the new project includes researchers from a university laboratory specifically set up to back the effort, and engineers from Reasonable Solutions, a local company.

“The R&D is expected to bring about new artificial intelligence technology called “multi-agent platform for adaptive planning.” It will control industrial resources on a real-time basis with minimal human involvement, thus helping cut overall costs,” SSAU emphasized in its press release.

The endeavor, estimated to cost a total of $2.3m, is kicking off next month, and the project owners are hoping to complete it within three years.

Symantec and Skolkovo pen partnership agreement
Earlier this week Skolkovo, the international tech hub under completion on the outskirts of Moscow, and California-based digital security solutions firm Symantec signed a deal for joint cooperation across a number of segments, reported East-West Digital News, the first all English-language online resource dedicated to Russian digital industries.

Cooperation will range from educational projects to cooperation in software development. In particular, Symantec will provide mentoring support and advice to companies participating at Skolkovo by helping them create innovative IT products.

“The development of an ecosystem that offers Skolkovo participants close contact with industry leading companies, scientific and technical experts, engineers and businessmen, access to sources, and the exchange of experience with colleagues from Russia, Europe, Asia and the USA is one of the most important activities of the Foundation,” Igor Bogachev, Executive Director of the IT Cluster at Skolkovo, stated in a press release.

In turn, Skolkovo will provide Symantec access to technologies and products from Russian innovators, offering the opportunity to use the resources of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skolkovo Tech).

Cooperation plans also include the organization of joint activities for the development of business contacts between associated partners and the involvement of new organizations at Skolkovo. The two entities are already involved in overseeing a competition of innovative projects in the field of information security, called iSecurity.

MSFT/IBM Boomerang'd As Russia Retaliates, Prepares To Cease Imports Of US IT
With the German economy already suffering (and AMD cutting its outlook), it appears Putin's promise to ensure Obama's action will see retaliation are starting to weigh as much on the rest of the world as Western media suggest US sanctions are weighing on Russia. This time, after blocking foreign cars and Intel/AMD chips, Bloomberg reports the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, is drafting a bill to require government agencies and state-run enterprises to give preference to local providers of software and hardware. For some context, IBM, Microsoft, HP, Cisco, Oracle, and Germany’s SAP SE had combined revenue of 285 billion rubles ($8.1 billion) from Russia (with 77% coming from government and SOEs). “This all has to do with sanctions,” warned one Russian politician.

Quite interesting turn of events. Will be good for MCST and Baikal electronics/Kraftway

Russia to inject pension money into innovation
The Russian government has unveiled plans to invest part of the Russians’ pension fund deposits in VC funds and also in securities and other financial instruments that high-tech companies have, reported the Russian business daily Vedomosti.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has reportedly asked the Central Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Finance to put together details for investing pension money in high technologies by November 1. The government’s Expert Council is said to be considering allowing the use of both pension reserves and deposits to inject in high-tech sectors up to 1% of the total Pension Fund money.

According to a recent Council report, Russia’s accumulative pension system had about $92bn in 2013—which means that innovation projects and venture firms may receive as much as a billion dollars in investments from Russia’s Pension Fund. It is an amount comparable to the entire volume of investment in the national venture market last year, estimated RVC, the government fund of funds for innovation.

Ruselectronics antes up $5.8bn for innovation
Ruselectronics, the government-owned high-tech umbrella company, has announced plans to invest more than $5.8bn in its innovation development between now and 2020.

The state-run giant is expected to develop and complete 92 projects in its focal areas, its corporate website said.

“The new innovation development program will help us boost sales revenues, take our products to the global markets, and make sure Russia gets a foothold in new market segments and ultimately takes a leadership role in a number of technology areas,” Ruselectronics CEO Andrei Zverev said.

Of the total investment amount, Ruselectronics wants to pump more than $3bn in technical modernization of its assets across Russia and then inject about $2.3bn in R&D, with the rest going to infrastructure improvements, better staff training, and international economic collaboration.

Russian scientists have developed a new kind of road asphalt pavement - seroasfaltobeton
Russian scientists have developed an experimental type of pavement called seroasfaltobeton. On the development of the standard will spend about 12 million rubles. Feature of the new coating is seroasfaltobeton that can be put in sub-zero temperatures. This type of paving asphalt involves adding a mixture of bitumen and 30% of the modified sulfur. It is expected that due to the covering of seroasfaltobetona roadbed will be less deformed and better withstand the studded tires. Pavement will also be more resistant to extreme high and low temperaturam.Eksperty note that their properties seroasfaltobeton turns the same as the traditional hot bitumen, however, the temperature of its production and laying 30-40 degrees cooler.
As an experiment, so the asphalt in 2002 has been successfully laid on Krylatskom bridge in Moscow at minus 26 degrees. In recent years, in Moscow using seroasfaltobetonnyh mixtures were built nine test sites on the Ring Road, in Taganka tunnel and at the intersection of Lobachevsky Michurinsky prospectus.

Important as apparently Russian roads get destroyed pretty quickly with old method, due to the weather as an example.

Russia’s own operating system expected to ‘oust’ Windows

So a Russian OS is in the works, and is already being tested. Based on a Linux Kernel, but still. With some major companies involved, it will be thoroughly used.

Russian Railways, the national railroad operator, has partnered up with IT experts at the Sarov Nuclear Center in the mid-Volga area to develop Russia’s own Linux-based computer operating system called “Synergy,” the Russian business daily Vedomosti reported.

According to a spokesperson for Russian Railways, the cooperation with the Sarov Nuclear Center calls for the development of a basic platform to develop and execute business apps. The platform is expected to include “a Linux kernel based OS version compatible with the other components of the platform.”

The Nuclear Center started the work by developing an operating system for Rosatom, Russia’s umbrella company for nuclear energy assets and the Center’s main boss. The initiative was originally aimed at enhancing Rosatom’s cyber-security and enabling the replacement of imported software for domestic products.

It was later found that Russian Railways intended to do likewise; and the decision was made to pool the efforts.

A pilot version of the new Russian operating system is said to have already been programmed; it is now being tested in Sarov, Vedomosti underscored.

Based on a Linux kernel, Synergy is a way of kissing goodbye to Windows, a system currently being used at the Sarov Nuclear Center, Vedomosti analysts believe.
The parties involved in the project have declined to comment on the cost of developing the new system or the number of programmers brought on board to do the job.

Good, and they should work with China and India on that as well! (Go to Silicon Valley, most of the engineers are Indian or Chinese.......)

    Hyperfine memory

Russian scientists from the Institute of Physics. Lebedev Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a method of producing thin-film ferroelectric - metal on the basis of the hyperfine barium titanate, said in a press release received by the Editor "Gazety.Ru".
It is noted that the results of a study of their properties has shown that these structures seem to be very promising for the creation of non-volatile memory devices. "Of course, our work is still at the stage of laboratory research. However, the first results show the high prospect of multilayer structures segnetoeletrik / metal based on BaTiO3 / Fe and BaTiO3 / Pt, as well as the universality of both films and our technology in terms of use. The developed technology BaTiO3 ferroelectric film deposition of metals can be used not only for storage devices based on thin-film ferroelectrics, but also to address a myriad of other problems in modern physics of thin films and nanostructures "- said Marat Minnekaev, describing the results obtained by him in his Ph.D. thesis.
