Filmed in the exposition of the International Military-Technical Forum "Army 2015" in Kubinka near Moscow is one of the new naval MiG-29K (hull number "39 blue"), built for the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy in 2014 under a contract from February 2012 the supply of 20 MiG-29K and four MiG-29KUB.

Russian Navy to Get Over 20 Ship-Borne Fighter Jets by Year-End
The aviation branch of the Russian Navy will get more than 20 new ship-borne MiG-29K fighters by the end of 2015, the Defense Ministry’s press service said.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The warplanes will serve as a backbone for a new aviation unit within the Northern Feet.
"To boost the Navy’s aviation component, the work is underway to equip the Navy Aviation [branch] with MiG-29K. This work began in 2013 and will be finalized in 2015," the press service said in a statement, adding the Navy will get more than 20 MiGs.
Russia has been stepping up its presence in the Arctic since late 2014 when it revised its military doctrine to declare the region an area of its interest.
The Arctic is believed to have vast untapped reserves of oil and gas. The five Arctic Circle countries, comprising the United States, Russia, Canada, Norway, and Denmark, are particularly interested in exploring them.

GarryB wrote:The question is... when the Su-33s are grounded, will they put MiGs on board or will they take this opportunity to put the K into dry dock for that big upgrade it was supposed to be getting.
I suspect it all depends on the status of all the new things they want to fit... and the changes they want to make.
testing the new nuclear propulsion plants for new heavy ships and carriers would be useful, but if they are not ready then it might spend some more time at sea...
they will likely wait for the naval Koalition gun system to be ready or perhaps a 203mm calibre version of it.... and of course having S-500 ready to go would also make things faster...
I have seen some reports in Russian sources that they are planning to form two air wings for Kuznetsov atm one new with Mig29K and one that will consits from overhauled SU33s and SU25UTG and will serve as secondary air wing, i am guessing this is sign they are serious about new carrier and that they want to have more deck capable pilots available.

The "new" carrier will be the post-mid-life refit Admiral Kuznetsov.

Mods, this is a MiG-29K related thread but lots of post related to carrier and shipyards. If possible shift all those post in last few pages to the related/appropriate thread preferably to the Shipyard/infrastructure related thread.
Also, please edit Mig-29K to MiG-29K, its really irritating to see it mostly written as Mig.

Re: MiG-29K: News and info
how much less footprint does mig-29k have over su-33? kuznetsov could carry 14 su-33 or 20 mig-29k.
chinese lianonig without granits can carry 26 su-33 - that means 36 mig-29?

Kuznetsov aircraft wing is not limited by space, but rather by the number of available aircraft. There is A LOT more space for more Su-33 in there.
However, to answer your question... Mig-29K is similar in size to F/A-18E/F. Slightly smaller. Shorter length (17.3 m vs 18.3), and smaller folded wingspan (7.8 m vs 9.3 m). Su-33 is 21.2 m by 7.4 m in dimension.

well not quite, i still dont know how max su-33 or mig-29 kuznetsov can take. but su-33 sure does fold allot, its less width then mig-29 in hangar. only longer. 22x7,4 vs 17,3x7,8.
does su-33 outer folding wing have fuel tanks?

This would be logical. NAVY should order 12 MiG-29KUB for Yeysk training center, where they could train naval and carrier pilots all time without the need for the planes from operational units, that they could have a constant flow of new young pilots. Than they should order another regiment of 24 MiG-29K/KUB for rotation on the carrier. Su-33 could now serve from ground air base.

MiG-29K/MiG-35 is equivalent to F/A-18E/F Super Hornet

Re: MiG-29K: News and info
Naval aviation of the Russian Navy is developing a multi-functional MiG-29K
New MiG-29K is a deeply modernized version of the MiG-29K sample 1988. Ground training facility in Yeisk training for aircrew flying the MiG-29K will be opened in the I quarter of 2016, said Shoigu.
MOSCOW, December 1 - RIA Novosti. The pilots of naval aviation of the Russian Navy develop a new multi-purpose fighter MiG-29K, said Tuesday the Russian Defense Minister, Army General Sergei Shoigu.
"For training flight personnel continues to build its use of ground training complex in Yeisk (Krasnodar region)," - he said on a conference call.
According to the plan, the complex, unique in Russia is not, due to open in the first quarter of next year.
Single MiG-29K is a multi-functional fighter generation "4 ++", designed to solve the problems of air defense ship connections, gaining dominance in the air, hitting surface and land targets with precision weapons day and night in all weather conditions.
New MiG-29K is a deeply modernized version of the MiG-29K sample of 1988 ("9-31").

Re: MiG-29K: News and info
People suggesting naval models of the Yak-130 to replace the Su-25 for the carrier training role should perhaps be aware that the MiG-29K2 has a two seater version of unified design as the current model Mig-29K2 is based on the MiG-29M2/MiG-35 airframe design.
That of course means the role of carrier trainer has become redundant with the opportunity to replace the trainer only Su-25s with multirole MiG-29K2UBs...

Interview with the head of the RAC "MiG" Sergei Korotkov. He says that the contract that was signed with the Ministry of Defense, for the delivery of 24 MiG-29K/KUB for Russian Navy has been completed. and intensive training has began with the purpose of operating with both the concrete strips and from the deck. The next year the fighters will be landing on the "Kuznetsov".

Considering, that they form a new regiment with MiG-29K/KUB for Kuznetsov carrier, than we could assume, when those MiG-29 regiment will be on the carrier deck, Su-33 carrier career will be over and will serve as ground based regiment. As ground based fighter Su-33 could still serve for another 15 to 20 years, so it is worth to modernize them to protect northern and arctic region, specially as it have better anti corrosion protection for operating over the sea and better navigational equipment for over the sea navigation, than standard ground based fighters. Stronger structure for carrier operations will enable quite long service life from ground based operations. They should modernize them to Su-27SM3 standard.
There is a good question if RuNAVY will buy more MiG-19K/KUB planes. They should buy at least 12 MiG-29KUB for Yeisk naval training center to constantly train new pilots. Shortage of carrier pilots is quite a problem. Forming another regiment for rotation on the carrier would be good too.

Another idea (adding to the upgrade you mention) would be to convert a dozen or two to dedicated EW platforms like the EF-18G, combined with ability to attach buddy-buddy aerial refuel kits. This will give extra eyes and legs to the shorter-legged MiG-29K. The carrier could easily carry 4-6 of those EW/tanker-enabled platforms (leave the Su-25UTG home) and then the standard complement of MiG-29K.
PS. I guess a big problem here is Su-33 being single-seat only.
