    Great thread sepheronx!

    Russia Approves IT Development Roadmap

MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian government approved a roadmap Monday for the domestic IT industry in an apparent move to boost the country's development in innovative spheres and diversify the economy away from raw material exports.
The roadmap for 2013-2018, developed by the Communications Ministry on the orders of President Vladimir Putin, stipulates the development of IT research, infrastructure and specialist training and the creation of tax and legal benefits for IT companies, the website Digit.ru reported on Monday.
“The IT sector needs a breakthrough. We need to raise the level of education in the IT sector, expand research in this sphere – both with the help of domestic higher education establishments and scientific organizations, and by creating new world-class research centers – as well as improve new mechanisms for supporting the IT business and exports of Russian high-tech products,” Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told a government meeting on Monday.
“As a result, IT growth rates should exceed Russia’s average GDP growth at least threefold; this is what we can legitimately count on,” Medvedev said.
Russia’s GDP grew only 3.4 percent last year – the lowest figure since the deep recession of 2009 – on weak demand for Russian exports in Europe.
The number of high-performance IT jobs should exceed 600,000 by 2018 and the output and export of domestic IT products and IT services should have doubled by that time, the premier said.
Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov, who was present at the government meeting, said Russia’s IT exports were expected to grow from $4.4 billion in 2012 to $9 billion by 2018, according to Digit.ru.

That is some good news. Although, there needs to be something to connect the institutions with the private/public enterprises because as it is, majority of breakthroughs in technology, happens at the universities, not at the industries. The industries usually just take that technology, expand it a bit, and then sell it en-mass.

There could be a MAJOR breakthrough in the IT sector in Russia if, and only if, MCST, Micron, Elveese and multiklet decided to work with the local universities to produce new technologies, and they produce the means of manufacturing it.

And after 2 years of construction and 715 million $ opened

At Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant was put universal rolling mill

Now why is this important. There are two main transport problems that needs to be solved that will bring many bin $.

Railway Strategy 2030: Russia’s most ambitious programme

Russia plans to increase Trans-Syberian railways capacity and speed of delivery which will decrease the cost of transport by rail in comparison with sea. By

doing so, Russia intends to become transit country of Chinese and Japan goods on their way to EU and vice verse making big money in the process while at the

same time developing Far East infrastructure.

Trans-Siberian Railway getting new lease on life

Same thing can be said about Northern Sea route. As ice melts it is becoming more and more attractive to shipping companies to use this route and Russia is expanding port and cargo/logistic to accommodate ever-increasing shipping.

It will take years for it to show profits though. Many of these industries either just opened or are going to open up in the next few years, so by 2020 we may see a major change.

Natural habitat is very important for developing a modern country, as it can help in scientific research of animals as well as a great source for tourism. As well, it is just overall good for the eco system. Thanks for the news.

    Info from Wikipedia:

    Project background

In 2007, in Gusev, for the first time in Russia, was established a production of set-top boxes for receiving satellite and terrestrial television broadcasts. Several months later, the General Satellite Corporation started building a plant in Gusev to manufacture household electronics products. The agreement between the mayor of Gusev, Nikolay Tsukanov, and the president of the General Satellite Corporation, Andrey Tkachenko, was signed in 2008, in order to create a modern industrial park in the city. The idea was approved by local authorities and was presented at the International Investment Forum "Sochi-2008".
The decision to locate the new production facilities in Gusev, according to Andrey Tkachenko, was made for two reasons. First, the experience of the first similar plant that had been working in Gusev as part of the special economic zone - the official residence of the Corporation - was successful. Second, the administration of the city took a great interest in cooperation for the creation of Technopolis and in a comprehensive solution to the problem of the territory development.

In 2009, two plants, JSC NPO Digital Television Systems (DTS) and Prankor, Ltd., were run - their products have no analogues in Russia. The plants produce set-top boxes for receiving the satellite and terrestrial TV broadcasts, and the production conveyor ensures a complete production cycle: starting with the motherboard and all the way up to the case and the satellite antennas as well. Formerly, most of these devices in the Russian market were imported, usually from China.

    Project mission

To create in Gusev a new effective pole for innovative development of Russia.
    Project objectives

comprehensive economic development of Gusev, improving its social infrastructure, creating conditions for the development of innovative activity in the city and transformation of Gusev into a Technopolis toward 2013.
establishing in Gusev a radio-electronics industry cluster. The Project envisages the construction of 5 high-tech industries, 2 of which are already running.
testing an innovative model of small cities development in Russia, which can be applied to revive other towns in the country, according to the Project results.
    Investments

Total investments in the Project (2008–2013): 5 billion rubles.
Until the February 2010, invested: 1,5 billion rubles.

    Technopolis area

    400 hectares. Over 3000 jobs.

    Kaliningrad Amber Factory

    Which produces amber jewelry
In ancient times a small amber jewelry worth more than the young slave, because the delivery of stone to Rome along the Amber path was difficult and dangerous. Up until modern times amber was mined by hand - in places where the deposits of "sun stone" comes to the surface. It was only in 1781, on the Baltic coast near the village of Palmniken (now Amber) was laid the first mine of amber extraction industrially. Its depth was about 30 meters - the height of a ten-modern home. Later became amber mine open pit quarries.

    Half a million spiders
After the Great Patriotic War of Königsberg region (East Prussia) went to the Soviet Union and was renamed Kaliningrad region. In 1947, on the basis of the deposit was created PalmnikenskogoKaliningrad Amber Factory. work began with the restoration of the old German quarry flooded at the end of the war. And in 1949, the plant produced 309 tons of "sun stone", which corresponds to the weight of 22 T-34 tanks.

In the late 50's. Kaliningrad amber began to extract hydro way: the top layer of rocks that do not contain anything of value, bilge pump, and the lower the pipeline went to the factory.
Over time, the old field Palmnikenskoe fail. In 1972, work began on the sand beach nearby area. Its development was saved from total collapse plant, because here the cost of production was much lower. In an average year is unloaded 500-600 tons of stone. Work on the sand beach area stopped only December 14, 2003
Since its start, the Kaliningrad Amber Factory not only was shipping raw amber, but also produced jewelry. In 1976, the mill has opened a new jewelry factory, which occupied 10 thousand square meters. m - is 2.5 times greater than the area of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. For 30 years, until the collapse of the Union at the plant produced up to 2 million of jewelery and fancy goods a year. Of particular prominence acquired brooch "Spider": for half a century they were released more than a million.

    The war on smugglers
But in the early 1990s, a period of prosperity ended. The company entered a period of protracted crisis. In 1993, an attempt was made criminal privatization of the plant, but the court found it invalid. However, over the last decade XXveka ruled the ball smugglers. Amber was taken out from the plant with false documents, employees were intimidated, and guard service cooperated with the criminals. An illegal Russian raw amber was formed market of Poland and Lithuania. Kaliningrad own jewelry manufacturing plant was destroyed.
Falling incomes and lack of investment have put the company on the brink of bankruptcy. In 2003, the Arbitration Court decided to impose external control plant. Just because the federal government failed to stop the mayhem is going on here. It was necessary to solve several problems, the most important of which - the neutralization of crime and modernization of production.
A new security system was created virtually from scratch, hired new people on the perimeter of the plant built a fence, imposed additional posts and installed a surveillance camera. Smugglers have made a step back. They used the "tame" people in law enforcement that have plagued the Kaliningrad factory countless inspections and audits. From 2003 to 2006, these raids were not less than sixty.

    New shine otchischennogo amber
Only after the federal government took control of the combine in his hands, unable to pay its multimillion-dollar debt, increase staff salaries and recreate a jewelry shop. In 2003 in Kaliningrad, produced 188 tons of amber in the amount of 206.2 million rubles., Nearly one and a half times more than the year before, in 2004, the plant has already unloaded 312 tons of stone. Subsequently, the annual production held near the level of 300 m, which is about the weight of the airplane, "Boeing-747" with cargo and passengers on board.
In 2012, the Kaliningrad Amber Factory celebrated its 65th anniversary. He is now ranked first in the world in the production of amber up to 90% of the global amount of "sun stone" made by forces of 500 workers at the plant. Also in Kaliningrad are developing fields of emerald and beryllium. The head of the Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin said that the plant will return to the list of strategic enterprises of Russia.

Big thanks goes to Sdelanounas for pointing this out. What a wonderful article, and I truly hope that one day I could purchase one of these fine pieces of jewelry for my wife!

Particularly interesting news about amber :)As a kid I used to stroll around looking for amber pieces washed away by the sea. By having no excavation sites we only produce 200-400 kg of Amber per year Very Happy
My country calls it self Land of amber, while 99 percent of amber our artists buy are from Russia. But now Chinese imploded the prices. They are buying amber like there is no tomorrow. Russian and Lithuanian artists are worried as for 1 kg quality amber You have to close to 10,000 euros! People are selling  amber they find, it's amber fever, no joking. You can see people leaving moon like landscapes after they dig amber themselves. Fines for non licensed excavation and selling are very harsh in Russia, but for a small match box sized piece You can get 500 euros so it's worth a risk. It's bit bizarre to see it happening as amber wasn't expensive and now all the process was made vulgar, there is no need for art, just material, but hey, it's capitalism.
