    Zil will probably end up being instituted as the luxury automobile maker in Russia. And I hope that will be the case. The model sure looks nice, and I cannot wait to see the end product!

    The limo looks a lot like the Rolls Royce limo.
    Certainly looks good enough to make serial product.
    I suppose in the past, most limos took a similar theme, whoever made them.

    One thing I'd say tho is, that it would be great to have a futuristic cutting edge Zil. Something like a modern day Aston Martin Lagonda. A Lamborghini like limo, but obviously taller and bigger. Or perhaps even a Porsche Panamera-like limo. (I notice Porsche are working with Zil currently). In the concept sketches produced in Car.ru (I think) there was a really beautiful "sporty" limo badged up as a Marussia, I recall.

    Now before anyone goes on a tirade regarding it, do not forget it is 700mhz and they are comparing it to a core i7 2600 which is 3.4ghz, as well as testing was very quick as they only had access to the 700mhz variant and all three being tested were running single core.

    If we were to theoretically put the Elbrus 4C to the same core speed, then it should be quite comparable to the processor, but due whatever the reason is, they have the core speed quite low. Now this is still a testing unit and was a showcase. So I wonder if there will be any improvements prior. But, regardless, a good step in the right direction and am interested in finding out how well it performs in multicore situations and how well it scales depending on clock speeds.

    Yes, I read that too but I also read its initial core speed was to be 1GHZ, so theoretically, we may see a 1 or more ghz model.

    For what is needed, this processor may be overkill. Although, I would be interested to see server enviornment in a cluster of these (hpc).

    The other thing too, is the software behind it all, and how well optimized. You can tell from the GOST test, where its built around Elbrus processor, it beats the Intel. So optimization of software is the next step.

    But apparently, I was wrong about openness of this processor. Apparently it is only for inudstry purposes and not for the general public really. So I would be interested to know when they will release Elbrus 2SM which is supposed to be commercial.

    Well, Russia has many software developers. If there is a demand on russian hardware, it's wouldn't be a problem to create an adequate software for it.

    Finally a Maglev line between Moscow and Vladivostok was always desperately needed, though it won't be cheap they can lobby for China and India to participate economically in it's construction with assurance that it would increase dividends for all 3 nations, and the hopes of extending the Maglev/Fast Rail networks in to Chinese and Indian territory.

    ^This is in Yakutia. Sounds like a good business to get into, both for sovereignty and general business prospects. It's not all about what is dug out of the ground on Russian soil, so interesting to see if Rostec will be involved in developing rare earths in other countries as well.

    Of course, in contrast to NATO hysterics about China cornering the market and restricting exports, Russia is actually doing something to be self sufficient and make money exporting the stuff. Which is funny, because NATO hysterics about malevolent Chinese intent aside, the stated Chinese goal of export restrictions was in fact to PROMOTE development of other global rare earth sources, a logical goal if China doesn't want to deplete it's own resources by being the sole supplier for the current time, and then be dependent on foreign sources when it's local reserves have run out.

Release of the most difficult elements - containing electronics control electrodes - is scheduled to begin by the end of 2015.
    Lithography equipment market is highly consolidated and, in fact, represented by three major producers: ASML, Nikon and Canon. Market size is about $ 6 billion, which corresponds to sales of several hundred cars a year.
    By the time the design capacity, the Russian plant Mapper will produce sets of electron optics for 20 cars per year.

    Products Mapper is focused on two market niches. First, lithographers company designed for small and medium sized little-chip manufacturers. No need to book a mask (one of the most expensive elements in microelectronics manufacturing) makes cost-effective for companies such issue even minimal batches of chips. Secondly, products Mapper addressed and large companies interested in the speedy promotion of new products on the market. At the design stage of the chip manufacturer forced to order several masks. In case of error, the mask has to remodel, resulting in time and cost.
    Mapper allows equipment at the design stage to test a virtually unlimited number of design options without having to create multiple lithographic masks, which significantly reduces the cost and faster time to market the new product.

    Russian cities that want to develop their public transit systems will soon have a stellar option to buy. A sleek new black streetcar looks like something Darth Vader would pilot in Star Wars and promises new levels of comfort and safety to commuters.

    The R1, or Russia One, was developed by a subsidiary of Uralvagonzavod, a company best known for producing advanced Russian tanks. The prototype streetcar, or tram, is to be revealed to the public on Wednesday at the Innoprom-2014 tech expo, but the producer offered a sneak peak to Russian bloggers one day ahead.





    Unlike many foreign tram producers, the Russians favored angles and facets over curves. The R1 looks somewhat block-like, closer to Battlestar Gallactica than the Starship Enterprise. But thanks to black composite glass panels, red elongated lights and silver lines, the tram resembles a huge modern smartphone. Some of the designers dubbed it “an iPhone on rails.”



    The interior is meant to be both comfortable and durable. The designers sacrificed the number of seats, leaving only 28 per car, for making those seats cozy and giving more space to standing passengers.



    Several features will help using R1 in some of the harsher climatic regions of Russia. Grooved aluminum stepping boards will have built-in electric heaters utilizing energy recuperated during breaking to prevent icing in wintertime. The outer glass panels have special fitting for swift replacement. Electric batteries allow a tram cut from power lines to travel a further 50km autonomously.





    Blogger Ivan Solomin, who is a tram driver himself and was among those invited to test the prototype, has doubts about rear-view cameras that substitute side mirrors at R1. He believes they may not give an adequate rear view to the driver, lacking proper depth perception. But he also praised the driver cabin windows for giving a good direct view – about 10 to 15 percent better than tram models currently used in Russia, he assessed.



    The producer estimates that the series version of the tram will cost around 1 million euro and will have few changes compared to the prototype on display. A pilot project to introduce R1 to Russian streets will be launched in Ekaterinburg, Urals Region. The tram is promised to roll out en mass by 2017, when Russia is to host FIFA World Cup.

    Tram doesn't look too bad, and it looks like quality is there.  Besides, Uralvagonzavod is a private company thus they need to be competitive in order to stay alive, thus quality will be a factor.  In terms of functionality, well, I am not overtly impressed with the seating conditions as they look semi cramp, and having forward facing seats that can only fit one person, is a poor use of space.  If the tram is to be used in subways, which seems to be the case, then cramped space is not the way to go, efficiency (more people per cart) is the better route.  But, it does look impressive.

    I guess we will have to wait and see what will become of it.  As well, I believe this is being pushed for the international market more so than the domestic market.  So it could be good for developing countries building up their infrastructure lines.

    Although, I still stand by my statement. At least the CTrain here in Calgary has dual seating for forward and backward facing seats. Our trains are from Siemans and they are usually garbage quality.
