Russia's Rosatom Receives First Batch of Fuel for Space Nuclear Engine

Rosatom is expected to reveal an experimental prototype of a nuclear reactor for the space engine in 2018, according to an official statement.

    http://sputniknews.com/business/20160321/1036691748/russia-rosatom-fuel.html

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's Rosatom state-run nuclear energy corporation obtained on Monday the first batch of experimental fuel for nuclear electric rocket under development in the country, the corporation said in a statement.
According to Rosatom, the fuel is required for deep space exploration.

Rosatom is expected to reveal an experimental prototype of a nuclear reactor for the space engine in 2018.

Russia has been developing a unique project to create a transport and energy unit on the basis of a megawatt-class nuclear electric propulsion since 2010.

The propulsion includes a nuclear reactor and systems, required to produce the necessary heat, as well as for reactor control and protection. Technical solutions included in the concept of the unit will allow to solve a wide range of space tasks, including research programs of the Moon and distant planets.

Lots of real world action for a vapourware project Laughing

I hope by 2030 they will have these engines deployed for an active propulsion (not inertial guidance) flight to Mars.

$20.5/10 = $2.05 billion per year, very cheap.

Satellites are mostly commercial so this budget does not determine their number.

very cheap? fanboyizm at best, they slashed many satelite launches and manned missions to moon were postponed to 2030s .... cry
with american private satelite launchers taking over commercial sector russian space is in big problems.

Those "photos" he has on his site are a joke. He thinks that he can tell that these are actually fragments of Breeze-M and
not paint chips or other irrelevant crap.

From a more sinister view, this could have been a failed sabotage attempt. But of course Atlanticist Zak will never entertain
such a theory since everything is always a "Russian epic fail". Zak is a transparent racist.

Head of space agency: Russia is undisputed leader in launch services market

MOSCOW, April 11. /TASS/. Russia ranks second to none in the world on the launch services and engine market as it administers more than 40% of all space launches, according to the Head of Roscosmos State Corporation Igor Komarov speaking with RT TV news channel.

"There are areas where Russia is an undisputed leader, particularly launch vehicles and launch services. This is where we are number one by a large margin, administering about 40% of all space launches worldwide," Komarov said.

Also, Russia leads the pack on the engine market, and in the area of manned space programs, he said, adding though that there are areas where "we’ve got room for improvement, and we could certainly learn a thing or two from our competitors in areas such as spacecraft quality, communications, or earth remote sensing systems."

This is not aimed at you but at Sputnik. The quality of that report was utter sh*t. It seems to have been written
by a grade school dropout who cannot focus on concepts let alone grammar (it is not an issue of translation). There
is absolutely zero information about new engines in that article. We already know about the upgraded RD-180,
    the RD-181.

    WTF!!
The latest most embarrassing misleading report about space mars exploration ever , done by who?

If you though it was done by CNN , or FOX or  BBC.. then you guessed wrong.
it was done by nothing less than Russian Government media Sputinik news.   Rolling Eyes

According to SPutnik news..  The exploration in mars began in 2001.  lol1
and India was first in mars than Russia.  lol1 and India travel to mars and got it
right in the first try.  Laughing

i have nothing against India.. wish them all the look and success in space and
they have very talented scientist too to do the job ,but when you have the retarded logic of such sputnik reports combined with such uninformed piece of shit report . like no mentioning how NASA carried almost the entire project on INDIA on their shoulders ,NASA facilities ,satellites and technology had to be used ,since India do not have a robust communication network of satellites in space to control the orbiter even less the experience to correctly adjust the fly path of the orbiter.Neither realize that going to space today is far easier ,not because scientist are better ,but because any amateur space program that start today as SpaceX is ,will benefits from the many decades of trial and error of NASA and Russia space programs.  So the mountain of knowledge that exist , give a HUGE advantage to anyone who comes later , that do not need
to experiment a lot and use already proven working technology.

    http://sputniknews.com/infographics/20160413/1037938064/ten-explorers-mars.html

For example today is very well know how lethal is space to electronics and humans for the radiation , only thanks to US and Russia decades of exploring space. and how cold is space ,
and hundred below zero degrees ,is not easy. to keep thing from freezing. But without that knowledge and the technology that is available for everyone today in composites and very resistant materials to heat and cold and radiation ,India will have never do it ever in the first try not even in the 100th. Until it gets knowledge first and technology needed to get there.

It just once more CONFIRMS , what i was saying to Garry , of the incompetence
of the Russian Government. Not even in their own financed media ,they can get the
information right and totally mis report Russia space program.  So a we reaching a point
where we need to warn people , of using Sputnik news for any info about space or science?
How can such things be possible ?  It is so complex for media to release a report that gets verified before released the information?

I means how hard it is ,to give a phone call to anyone in the Russian space industry and ask
them Russia participation in mars? or just a quick look at wikipedia which is neither always
truthful but in this case they also have way better information that this piece of junk report about mars by sputnik .

Even NASA official website get it right about Russia exploration in mars. Laughing

This doesn't look like a big deal.. but it is folks!!!
Because Russia have close to ZERO influence in (the world of communications) and media,
the west control 99% of the world media ,magazines and newspapers, [b] so the last thing they can do is to at least get it right with the one or two media outlets they control ? dont you think? or perhaps to ask a journalist to do a proper investigation  is too much ? and supervision of their job is too hard?   Neutral

It also fails to mention how on board of the Exo mars rover ,there will be Russian scientific equipment and sensors to measure the environment in mars.

and this is unfortunately not the first time i see such misleading reports.  RT also have done their own WTF reports ,It looks as if no one in Russia Government really cares about doing its job correctly and there is zero supervision of anything there . This makes me remember the next youtube video. that clearly illustrate the LAZY fat ,LAME, Careless aptitude of Russians in
soviet times ,at their jobs ,that the government controls as had no proper supervision. start watching at minute 23.00

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3sN9KDEfXY

So perhaps if a problem of the old soviet ways of managing and supervision (or lack of)

Vann... man...  take a chill pill my friend...

The Sputnik multimedia is for ACTIVE spacecraft, and FUTURE spacecraft that are currently funded and under active development.  It doesn't include past missions (no Spirit MER, no Phoenix polar lander), and given the oldest current craft is Odyssey in 2001, its accurate.  It's actually a pretty good entry level graphic aimed at people who probably know little about martian robotic exploration.

It's a little much to expect the Russian government to make big efforts to laud its achievements in Mars exploration when there has been little to cheer about for nearly 40 years.  Phobos 1 & 2 were disappointing (not failures, but the mission under-performed) and Mars-96 & Phobos Grunt were both embarrassing disasters.  I've no doubt that Russia can recapture its previous glory and perform successful interplanetary missions (especially Venus were Soviet successes were resounding), but their priorities seem to be elsewhere at the moment, and there is only so much cash to spread around.
