Baltiysky Zavod signs contract for construction of two serial nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220

On May 29, 2014, Baltiysky Zavod - Sudostroyeniye LLC (United Shipbuilding Corporation OJSC) and State Corporation Rosatom signed a contract for construction of serial multipurpose nuclear-powered icebreakers of Project 22220. According to the press center of USC, the contract is valued at RUB 84.4 bln, thus increasing the shipyard’s backlog of orders to RUB 150 bln.

Baltiysky Zavod Shipyard is now building the flagship universal nuclear-powered icebreaker of Project 22220, which was laid down on November 5, 2013. The LK-60 "Arctica" will be powered by two RITM-200 reactors of 175 MWt, which together deliver 60 MW at the three propellers via twin turbine-generators and three motors and will be the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world.

    Ship's specifications: LOA - 173.3 m, beam - 34 m, draft at DWL- 10.5 m, minimum loaded draft - 8,55 m, displacement - 33.54 tonnes.
Under the terms of the contract the flagship is scheduled for completion in December 2017. The serial icebreakers are to be delivered in December 2019 and in December 2020.

The LK-60 features advanced dual-draft capability, which makes it suitable for operations both in the Arctic waters, and in the mouths of the northern rivers. The icebreakers are to escort vessels transporting hydrocarbons from the Yamal and Gydan peninsulas, Kara Sea to the states of the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.

Baltiysky Zavod OJSC specializes in construction of rank 1 surface-crafts, ice class vessels with nuclear and diesel-electric propulsion plants, nuclear floating energy units, floating distilling plants. The shipyard was set up in 1856. In its history Baltiysky Zavod which built over 600 ships and vessels was privatized several times and returned to state control when financial problems arose. In late 2011, the shipyard once more fell under the control of the state represented by the United Shipbuilding Corporation. To preserve the staff and the competence of the shipyard, USC founded Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye LLC.

Before signing the contract, the backlog of orders of Baltiysky Zavod-Sudostroyeniye LLC was valued at about RUB 60 bln. The largest orders are: 60-MWt nuclear icebreaker, 25-MWt diesel-electric icebreaker, floating power unit of the world’s first floating nuclear heat and power plant. In 2012, the Company’s turnover mage RUB 9 bln, net profit – RUB 50 mln.

United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC OJSC) is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was set up in 2007 with 100% federal ownership. The holding comprises 60 companies and organizations (major shipbuilding and shiprepairing companies as well as leading design bureaus). Currently, USC consolidates about 80% of the domestic shipbuilding complex. The Russian market is the main focus of the state corporation though it also exports its products to 20 countries worldwide.

    Pretty substantial news.

Icebreaker Soviet Union (Arkitka class) will be brought back into service by 2018. The ship was commission in 1989, so it is not very old- especially since it spend the last 6 years @ pier. The ship is being brought back because the icebreaker Russia has exhausted its propulsion life, and Rosatomflot needs a replacement. The propulsion of the ship will receive a life extension of 150,000 hours- extending service life by about 8 years. Potentially they can increase engine life to 175,000 hours, or 10-12 years of operation.

‘Soviet Union’ to replace ‘Russia’ by the end of the year

An Arktika-class nuclear-powered icebreaker is to return into service after five years of waiting for decommissioning. The Sovetsky Soyuz, will replace the Rossiya icebreaker, which needs to have its reactor fuel replenished, and will operate in the Kara Sea and the Gulf of Ob in the Russian Arctic. inShare Share by e-mail Related Icehunters: Russian conquerors of the North Pole Russian Defense Minister orders to plan military infrastructure development, units' deployment in Arctic Defense Ministry to form ice-class patrol ship unit Tags arctic defense navy Defense Headlines LEGO for the Russian army: Standardized combat platforms on the way LEGO for the Russian army: Standardized combat platforms on the way The lost miracle of Russia’s medieval sword makers The lost miracle of Russia’s medieval sword makers Russia to bring first unmanned combat aircraft into service by 2020 Russia to bring first unmanned combat aircraft into service by 2020 Russia's top-secret nuclear submarine comes into service Russia's top-secret nuclear submarine comes into service ‘Soviet Union’ to replace ‘Russia’ by the end of the year The nuclear-powered icebreaker "Soviet Union". Source: ITAR-TASS Before the end of the year, the Soviet Union will replace Russia. This is not an announcement of an impending coup or change of political line, although the move does involve giants, albeit not geopolitical but marine ones: Soviet-era nuclear-powered icebreakers of the Arktika-class. Arktika-class nuclear icebreakers are auxiliary vessels with two nuclear reactors onboard and a displacement of half an aircraft carrier. A unique ship with an ordinary story The icebreaker Sovetsky Soyuz came into service just two years before the country that gave it life and its name ceased to exist. It was the third ship in the series. Unlike its illustrious predecessors, which became the first ships to reach the North Pole, the Sovetsky Soyuz led a quiet life, carrying wealthy foreigners on their tourist voyages to the Arctic. Icehunters: Russian conquerors of the North Pole Icehunters: Russian conquerors of the North Pole In the early 2000s, it was used as a floating power plant, with its reactors generating electricity for various coastal facilities in Murmansk. Then there were several more scientific expeditions, after which the giant ship spent five years laid up. Now the icebreaker is in demand again. It has been announced that for at least eight more years the Sovetsky Soyuz will be used to help ships navigate along the increasingly more popular Northern Sea Route, which – due to melting ice – has over the past three years seen a 15-fold rise in cargo traffic (from 100,000 tons in 2010 to 1.5 million tons in 2013). Furthermore, the Northern Sea Route is shorter than routes running through southern latitudes; is safer since there are no pirates; and is therefore economically more efficient. Almost a cruiser The refurbishment of the Sovetsky Soyuz is due to be completed by the end of this year. It will replace the nuclear icebreaker Rossiya, which needs to have its reactor fuel refilled. Part of Rossiya’s crew have already transferred to the Sovetsky Soyuz and are busy doing repairs there. The service life of its reactor has been extended to 150,000 hours. Related Russian submarines outfitted to break thick Arctic ice Russian polar expert says Arctic too important to ignore Russia pioneers floating nuclear power plants Russia pioneers floating nuclear power plants The Rosatomflot company, which owns all nuclear-powered icebreakers in Russia, has already outlined the tasks for the Sovetsky Soyuz, which will be on duty in the Kara Sea and in the Gulf of Ob, where, it will become part of the Yamal LNG megaproject in the new port of Sabetta, accompanying tankers carrying gas condensate. Thus, out of the six Arktika-class icebreakers, soon only three will remain in service: Yamal, 50 Let Pobedy, and Sovetsky Soyuz. These gigantic ships with a length of up to 150 meters and a crew of 138 people were the most powerful ships in the world when the first of them was built in 1972. These icebreakers were built as dual-purpose ships: It was envisaged that they could be quickly converted into military auxiliary cruisers. They have fire-control radars and a dedicated section for installing artillery weapons. Part of the relevant equipment is mothballed onboard and part is kept in shore depots. Extending the service life of the Arktika-class icebreakers will give shipbuilders more time to create icebreakers of the new, LK-60, type. St. Petersburg’s Baltiysky Zavod shipyard will build three new ships for Atomflot, due to come into service after 2020.

New Russian Nuclear-Powered Icebreakers Named ‘Arctic,’ ‘Siberia’ and ‘Ural’

The next-generation nuclear-powered Russian icebreakers scheduled to be put into operation in 2017-2021 were named “Arctic,” “Siberia” and “Ural,” Rosatomflot Director General Vyacheslav Ruksha said Thursday.

“We need to put the first LK-60Ya model universal nuclear icebreaker into operation no later than the end of 2017. The second icebreaker is expected to arrive from the shipyard in late 2019-early 2020, and the third one – late 2020-early 2021. These icebreakers named ‘Arctic,’ ‘Siberia’ and ‘Ural’ are able to navigate through ice up to almost three meters thick,” Ruksha told RIA Novosti.

The first LK-60 nuclear icebreaker, the largest of its kind, is being constructed at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard. The contract is valued at 37 billion rubles (over $1 bln).

Rosatomflot is a subsidiary of Russian state corporation Rosatom dedicated to nuclear-powered marine vessels. Among the main duties performed by Rosatomflot are piloting and towing vessels to increase navigation speeds, transporting cargo safety out of ports near Russia’s Arctic coastline, conducting rescue operations on ice and carrying out research programs.

First deliveries can be expected in 2015

    Icebreakers - Page 2 307429-2560x1600_588

Specialists holding "Schwabe" ship developed a laser cannon to cut the ice and are now pursuing her test.

"We created the ship's laser for Arctic exploration. There's difficult ice conditions, while working and platforms, and must pass judgment. Put a kind of laser gun, it like glass cutters, snipped with ice, and then ship it to your weight presses "- commented on the development of general director of holding" Schwabe "Sergei Maxine at the international exhibition" Oboronekspo. "

Now laser cannon mounted on an icebreaker and tested. The laser can also make an incision in the ice, going to standing in the Arctic seas to oil and gas platforms, making it easier to chopping, reports RIA "Novosti".

According to Sergei Maxine, if the tests are successful, the laser devices can be put on ice-class vessels facilitated to ensure delivery of the northern Siberian rivers, where the ice is thinner. First deliveries can be expected in 2015.

"Schwabe" completes the development of shipboard laser system
The system will be used for the cutting of Arctic sea ice

    Icebreakers - Page 2 2_1_588

Engineers holding "Schwabe" , a new laser system for cutting ice formations. After the test, the complex will be installed on icebreakers - it will make an incision in the ice on the routes of ships, as well as ice, moving to oil and gas platforms, thus facilitating its further fragmentation.

In 2013, at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, the project was awarded a gold medal. The project is considered to be very promising and relevant, according to a company press release .

As in recent years, the demand for energy has increased significantly, Russia started to pay more attention to its northern and arctic areas. Researches have revealed a number of major oil and gas fields. However, the difficult ice conditions in the Arctic creates problems Russian oil and gas companies. Impact on the mass of ice for the purpose of splitting is the main task of the new laser.

"We created the ship's laser for Arctic exploration. There's difficult ice conditions, while working and platforms, and must pass judgment. Put a kind of laser gun, it like glass cutters, snipped with ice, and then ship it to your weight presses "- commented on the development of general director of holding" Schwabe "Sergei Maxine at the international exhibition "Oboronekspo" .

In what is supposed to extend the scope created in the "Schwabe" laser system - install it on the ice class vessels facilitated to ensure delivery of the northern Siberian rivers. As previously reported by the press service of the holding, the first deliveries of the complex can be expected in 2015.

Russia Produces First Nuclear Fuel Elements for Future Arktika Icebreaker

Rosatom TVEL fuel company announced that company produced first nuclear fuel elements for LK-60 icebreaker.

MOSCOW, November 13 (Sputnik) – The first nuclear fuel elements have been produced for a next-generation, nuclear-powered icebreaker in Russia by Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ), Rosatom's TVEL fuel company said Thursday.

The first LK-60 icebreaker, the largest of its kind to date, is being constructed at Russia's Baltiysky Zavod shipyard. Built to navigate through ice up to almost three meters (10 feet) thick, the icebreaker's construction began in 2013 and is expected to launch no later than 2017.

Mashinostroitelny Zavod, specializing in production of fuel elements for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-100 and BN-600 nuclear power reactors, will construct a new RITM-200 reactor developed by Rosatom's OKBM Afrikantov, for the Arktika class icebreaker. It will use 20 percent enriched uranium-235.

According to what I've read, the Artika class are actually "auxillary cruisers".
They have special space for arnaments and were built with fire control radar.
This equipment is still onboard and also kept in storage onshore. This makes them pretty amazing creations, and ones most people would prob not know about.

I wonder if the new icebreakers will be built in a similar way. I think that would make perfect sense. Bearing in mind the Arctic is in some ways "the new frontier".
