Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
That si interesting, so presumably part of the Su-25 fleet will be upgraded with the SVP-24-25, likely much cheaper than the top-end SM3 upgrade, but also not as capable as far as i gather. This might have to do with recent statements about defence spending reduction (a big mistake imo, big mistake), what do you think?

It's difficult to say. Maybe this Gefest FCS will be also part of Su-25SM upgrade. As I know, Su-25SM modernization mostly include new navigational suite with additional GPS/GLONASS complex and ESM complex with new Pastel RWR and now also with MAWS sensors and new jamming pods. Of course it get new HUD and an LCD display, but the rest of FCS is the same as Su-25SM didn't get any new weapon. We don't know, what is the difference between Su-25SM and SVP-24-25 FCS, they both improve accuracy with unguided munition through improved navigational suite and GPS/GLONASS complex. Maybe Gefest have better FCS computer and could integrate more weapons into it. I hope they will integrate TV/IIR guided missiles and bombs, which will improve Su-25SM capabilities to operate from the safe distance and to improve night capabilities with IIR guided missiles.

Russia’s Defense Ministry to set up new air assault group in Siberia
The air regiment with its Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO reporting name: Frogfoot) attack aircraft will fly from the Step airfield near Chita
MOSCOW, July 28. /TASS/. Russia’s Defense Ministry has started forming a new large air group, which will be based in East Siberia, Eastern Military District spokesman Alexander Gordeyev said on Tuesday.
The air assault regiment will be based at the aerodrome Step in the Trans-Baikal Territory, the spokesman said.
The air regiment with its Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO reporting name: Frogfoot) attack aircraft will fly from the Step airfield near Chita whose modernization will take no more than a year, the spokesman said, adding the aerodrome would be a unique logistics center.
"Currently work is under way to form the engineering and technical and maintenance personnel and requests have been filed for the necessary amount of armaments and combat hardware and material supplies," the colonel said.
Engineering and technical units and the air regiment’s flight control service are expected to be established by the end of this year, he added.
After the completion of necessary works, the Step aerodrome will have no analogs in East Siberia and the Russian Far East by its capabilities, the spokesman said.
Apart from the possibility to receive aircraft of all types, from helicopters to heavy military transport planes, the aerodrome will feature developed infrastructure with unique logistics possibilities," the spokesman said.

As I know, at the moment no new Su-25 is in production. there were some plans to produce new Su-25UBM in Ulan Ude as factory in Ulan Ude produced two seater Su-25UB. Single seater Su-25 was produced in Tbilisi in Georgia.

Most probably RuAF will relocate Su-25 regiment from Domna air base to renovated Step air base.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to accelerate the modernization of all Su-25 to the level of SM3.
Legendary attack aircraft, the name of which is supplemented by the prefix “SM3”, is different from its predecessors by the new electronic equipment domestic production.
The equipment allows the use of modern guided missiles and guided aerial bombs. According to the pilots, the combat effectiveness of the upgraded vehicles increased almost threefold. Su-25SM3 especially good in the fight against the enemy drones.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Actually I would pay good money to try that... flying around in an Su-35SM3 with a couple of 23mm cannon pods and of course the main 30mm gun and fly around airspace in the middle of nowhere over Russia shooting down unmanned drones designed to look like US drones and western fighter aircraft...
That would be serious fun.

Interesting because I had read way back when the Su-25SM came out that it included an order for 2 UB's to be upgraded to UBM.
The joys of trying to follow the Russian Military...

Russian Fighter Pilots Polishing Low Altitude Skills on Su-25s
Russian pilots are mastering clandestine maneuvers to avoid anti-aircraft missile systems.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian pilots in the Southern Military District are currently increasing their skills in extremely low altitude flights on Su-25SM Frogfoot close air support jets, the Russian Defense Ministry’s Southern Military District’s press service said Wednesday.
“During the flight training at extremely low altitude [as low as 25 meters above the ground], the military pilots will complete tasks of clandestine maneuvers of the fighter jets to avoid anti-aircraft missile systems of a conditional enemy,” the press service said in a statement.
The pilots will also practice emergency drills to include engine cutouts.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Su-25SM3 will get new L-150-16M RWR/ELINT complex, which was tested and will soon be in serial production. This new RWR will be also installed in Su-27 derivates. L-150-16M not only passively target ground based radars for anti-radar missiles, but also air targets for R-77 and R-27P/EP missiles.
Together with MAWS sensors, radar jammers and maybe even LWRs, Su-25SM3 will have similar ESM complex as Spectra in Rafale.

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Very interesting.
So this will give Su-25SM the capabilities to launch anti radiation missiles as well as launch air to air without a need of a radar, but simply a way to pick up the signals from radar? Awesome!

Re: Su-25 attack aircraft
Wonder if PAKFA's DIRCM will be making it onto Su-25, or future revamp of platform?
I'm not exactly sure what they would want to accomplish with cleansheet PAKSHA (?) design,
that they couldn't accomplish with modernized Su-25 with new engines, avionics, subsystems (all electric actuators?)

Important part of upgrading Su-25 to Su-25SM3 will be replacing the old Klen-PS laser targeting device with new SOLT-25 device with laser, TV and thermal imager for all day operation in searching, identifying and engaging targets. There is no need for any modifications in Su-25 as SOLT-25 is the same size as Klen-PS and have the same fixing points. State tests of SOLT-25 will go in this autumn and this complex is also placed in Yak-130 prototype in MAKS-2015.

Russia start with flying testings of twin seater Su-25UBM which will be identical to the most deeply modernized Su-25SM3. Twin seater Su-25UBM is better suited for all weather and night operations so RuAF will modernize Su-25UB to Su-25UBM for trainers in Su-25SM squadrons and for independent squadrons.

I'm not sure how to read this. Are the SM3 modernization (5), of those previously modernized to SM standard or other aircraft all together?
