Russia Begins Mass Production of Glonass-K1 Navigation Satellites

Russia's Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems company has put the advanced Glonass-K1 navigation satellite into mass production.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The mass production of Glonass-K1, the third generation of GLONASS navigation satellites, has begun, Federal Space Agency Roscosmos said Tuesday. This is aimed at ensuring the further development and expansion of the Glonass satellite network through 2017-2019. Glonass-K1 satellites have an increased lifetime of 10 to 12 years, a reduced weight of only 935 kilograms and offer an additional L-Band navigational signal.

"These satellites will be used to develop the Glonass grouping in 2017-2019," Roscosmos said in a statement.

Glonass is a satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. An alternative to the United States’ Global Positioning System (GPS), the Glonass network provides real-time positioning and speed data for surface, sea and airborne objects around the globe.

The Glonass network currently consists of 28 satellites, 24 of which are operational.

In November 2014, Russia’s Aerospace Defense Forces Deputy Commander Maj. Gen. Anatoly Nestechuk said that the testing of the new generation of GLONASS-K satellites will be over by 2015.

GLONASS exceeds American counterpart, the GPS system

The number of satellites of the Russian space navigation system GLONASS will not decrease with the introduction of more sophisticated devices, said Director of the Main test space center (GICC) named Titov, General-Major Andrey Ilyin.
Of groups of the space navigation system GLONASS is currently 28 spacecraft. Of these, 24 satellites are used for the intended purpose, one is in orbital reserve, one exploring the inconstruction, and two devices "GLONASS-K" undergoing flight tests.
"No, it will remain 24, but the accuracy of the field will be improved due to the fact that we put on space vehicles all new and new equipment, and, accordingly, the ground control is improving," said Ilyin.
Director GICC noted that GLONASS is superior to the American counterpart, a GPS system on a number of parameters that were laid in it.
"It is superior to GPS accuracy characteristics in the Northern latitudes. If the American system was originally created for the Southern latitudes, ours — for North. This and a smaller number of machines participating in the system: Americans with 30 GPS devices provide the same characteristics that GLONASS apparatus 24," — said Ilyin.

Russia stops manufacturing of Glonass-M navigation satellites

They will be replaced by next-generation GLONASS-K and GLONASS-K2 navigation satellites
    Glonass-M satellite production

KRASNOYARSK, July 30. /TASS/. Manufacturing of navigational satellites of the GLONASS-M family in the Krasnoyarsk territory has been rounded up and they will be replaced by the satellites of next-generation families - GLONASS-K and GLONASS-K2, a spokesman for the Informational Satellite Systems (ISS) company said on Thursday.

"The last GLONASS-M vehicle was manufactured under item No. 61 and placed in storage until a decision on its launch into orbit," he said. "It became the ninth satellite in the GLONASS reserve of vehicles kept on the ground."

At present, two-thirds of Russia’s orbital grouping consists of the satellites designed and manufactured by the ISS.

Apart from GLONASS, the company is also building the spacecraft for the Gonets, Express, and Yamal telecommunications systems. All in all, the company has built more than 1,200 satellites and forty space systems over the 55 years of its history.

It added GLONASS-M satellites to its line of products fifteen years ago. The first one was launched into orbit in 2003.

"They are the improved versions of their predecessors, the GLONASS family," he said. "The modernized version had an expanded term of warranty life - from three to seven years, and improved the quality of the navigation signal. The precision of satellite definitions of the Russian system has increased tenfold."

As of 2011, twenty-four GLONASS-M satellites have been put into orbit, the ISS press service said.

Russia’s federal space agency to develop GLONASS Arctic navigation segment

The need for this work was prompted by problems in the development of Glonass-K high-accuracy satellites and difficulties in using Glonass ground-based stations in the Antarctic

MOSCOW, July 31. /TASS/. Russia’s Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) plans to allocate $7 million to develop a segment of the GLONASS satellite-based navigation system to improve the system's accuracy in Russia and in the Arctic, according to documentation posted on the website of state purchases on Friday.

The need for this work was prompted by problems in the development of Glonass-K high-accuracy satellites and difficulties in using Glonass ground-based stations in the Antarctic, the document says.

This project envisages adding about 4-6 satellites in geosynchronous inclined orbits to the GLONASS system. These orbits have their inclination between the polar and equatorial (geostationary) orbits and have an inclination angle of about 63 degrees. Together with GLONASS signals, this new segment will help locate objects on the territory of Russia and in the Arctic with an accuracy of 0.6 meters, the document says.

The need to create this system is prompted by "restrictions for the supply of foreign-made electronic parts and components with enhanced operational characteristics for Glonass-K satellites and delays in the creation of the ground-based space segment" and also by the fact that "control stations in the Antarctic cannot be used for time-and-frequency provision owing to the absence of mutual synchronization with the facilities on the territory of Russia," Roscosmos said.

Russian Defense Ministry to Use Updated GLONASS Navigation System by 2016

The developer's CEO said that the renewed GLONASS version will have significant changes.

ZHUKOVSKY (Sputnik) — Russia's GLONASS satellite navigation network, updated in compliance with the Russian Defense Ministry requirements, will be made available for use by the ministry by the end of 2015, the CEO of the developing company Russian Space Systems said Tuesday.

"Just the other day the [Russian] Aerospace Forces held a meeting on the issue and came to an opinion that the tests [of GLONASS] should be completed this year. We will make every effort to put the system into operation to the customer within these terms," Andrei Tyulin said.

This updated system was planned to be put into operation several years ago, Tyulin added, but the Defense Ministry had a number of issues requiring resolution. The updated version of GLONASS will show significant changes in the system, the CEO said.

GLONASS is a satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. The GLONASS project, launched in 1993, is considered to be Russia's equivalent of GPS (Global Positioning System).

GLONASS orbital grouping upgrade to start in 2018

The GLONASS system will have a serious advantage over other systems as it will transmit code division signals along with frequency division signals

MOSCOW, September 15. /TASS/. Russia will start to use new-generation Glonass-K satellites in its GLONASS orbital grouping from 2018, Russian Space Systems First Deputy CEO Grigory Stupak said late on Monday.

"From 2018, we will watch the renewal of the orbital grouping, the basis of which will be composed of Glonass-K spacecraft. Their distinctive feature is that they will transmit code division signals. Thus, the GLONASS system will transmit code division signals along with frequency division signals. In this regard, the GLONASS system will have a serious advantage over other systems," Stupak said at the conference entitled: "International School on Satellite Navigation’.

By that time, the formation of the European Galileo and the Chinese BeiDou global satellite navigation systems will be nearing completion or will be completed, he added.

"Now the system is being set up. About two days ago we were informed that two more Galileo satellites had been launched by our carrier rocket. The system will comprise ten spacecraft. We may suppose that by 2018-2019 the system will be fully established," Stupak said.

The establishment of the BeiDou orbital grouping is to be completed by 2020, he added.

Today, the GLONASS system comprises two Glonass-K spacecraft. Both of them are undergoing flight trials.

Earlier, Nikolai Testoyedov, CEO of Information Satellite Systems, which manufactures satellites for the GLONASS system, said that Glonass-K spacecraft are scheduled to be launched from 2017.

Doubt : When Glonass falters , where will the military turn ?

I mean darpa is working on projects to reduce us dependency : http://gcn.com/articles/2014/08/01/darpa-gps-pnt.aspx

eLoran signals are nearly unjammable due to their high power; the signals have about 1.3 million times more power than GPS signals. The radio towers are land-based, meaning that they are not susceptible to space debris or space warfare and can operate concurrently with GPS, but can only provide a certain range.
Several countries have already implemented eLoran, including South Korea, which has been affected by North Korean GPS jamming, and the U.K. for use in maritime shipping. Meanwhile, the United States is still trying to come up with a plan to implement the system. While several departments such as DOD and the Homeland Security and Transportation departments have an interest in the system, none of them want to pay for the entire program as budgets continue to shrink.

Russia plans to create renewed remote Earth sensing system — deputy PM

According to Dmitry Rogozin Russia plans to qualitatively renew its Glonass satellite constellation by 2020

MOSCOW, October 27. /TASS/. Russia plans to create a renewed system of Earth’s remote sensing, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Tuesday.

"We plan to create a renewed system of Earth’s remote sensing. It will comprise high-resolution imaging, emergencies operational monitoring satellites, as well as meteorological and geophysical spacecraft," the deputy prime minister said at an international forum on Russian innovative technology and the world market.

According to Rogozin Russia plans to qualitatively renew its Glonass satellite constellation by 2020.

"The development of the agrarian sector of the economy, development of the independent electric power generation infrastructure, including introduction of the wind and solar power technology, as well as the data transfer systems requires higher quality of the Glonass system. This will be done by 2020. The qualitative renewal of the [Glonass satellite] constellation is beginning," Rogozin said at an international forum that discusses Russian innovation technology on the world market.

The deputy prime minister said that Russia has created a considerable potential for launching the needed number of spacecraft and supplement the orbital constellation, replacing satellites with depleted resource. He also said that Glonass satellites with the formally expiring service life continue to function normally.

GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System), is a space-based satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces. Its development began during the Soviet period.

Russia’s Glonass-M satellite delivered into interim orbit

This is the second launch of a Glonass-M satellite and the third launch of a Soyuz-2 medium-class carrier rocket from the Plesetsk cosmodrome this year

MOSCOW, May 29. /TASS/. A Fregat booster with a Glonass-M satellite separated from the third stage of a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket at the designated time in a normal regime, the press office of the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday.

The carrier rocket was launched at 11:45 a.m. Moscow time (08:45 GMT) from site No. 43 of the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk Region in north Russia by an operational crew of the Russian Aerospace Force’s space troops.

"It will take several hours for the Fregat booster to bring the Glonass-M satellite into the designated orbit," the press office said.

This is the second launch of a Glonass-M satellite and the third launch of a Soyuz-2 medium-class carrier rocket from the Plesetsk cosmodrome this year.

The flight tests of the Soyuz-2 spacecraft began at the spaceport on November 8, 2004. Over the last 12 years, 27 launches of Soyuz-2 carrier rockets in their upgraded 1a, 1b and 1v modifications have been carried out at the Plesetsk space port.

The launch was initially scheduled for May 21. Nikolai Testoyedov, head of the Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems Company that produces navigation satellites told journalists that the postponement of the launch of Glonass-M satellite No 53 was not related to its condition.

As Roscosmos State Corporation said earlier, up to eight satellites may join the Glonass system constellation by the end of 2017. Both Soyuz launch vehicles and Proton-M heavy carrier rockets may be used for the launches. A source in the space rocket industry told TASS that the launch of a Proton carrier rocket with three Glonass satellites may take place already before the end of 2016.

Glonass is Russia's satellite navigation system designed to provide Russia with its own navigation data for military and civilian use, as well as to compete with the US Global Positioning System (GPS) in the commercial market for navigation data.
